- Within the last century, the knowledge of art, science and technology has greatly evolved. Nations have invested heavily into research in order to proffer solution to impending global crisis, and also make man’s life more comfortable. Education and research, which are necessities for increasing knowledge, have enjoyed better funding and support outside Africa. This can be linked to Africa’s small contribution to modern science and technological advancement.
- African countries are said to be independent, however, they still depend majorly on the product of other continents’ research and knowledge. Africa exchanges her fast decreasing natural resources for products of state-of-the-art research from other continents. In recent years, for reasons beyond the proposed discussion, many African countries have reduced their budget in Education and Research. And for Africa to be truly independent, she needs to promote education and research at various levels and sectors.
- With the reducing educational fund in some African nations, a cost effective intervention is required for African educational institutions. Wikimedia is known to have educationally inclined projects that make knowledge accessible for free. Wikimedia projects, sources of free knowledge, when incorporated into our school curricula, is expected to improve learning processes and outcomes at all educational levels. The proposed relationship between Wikimedia projects and African educational institutions is expected to be symbiotic. Students, teachers, researchers and other academic stakeholders that will benefit from this relationship are expected to contribute immensely to the Wikimedia content.
- The prospects, challenges and way out in realizing the strategic incorporation of Wikimedia’s rich value into African Institutions is proposed for discussion.

- Olugbenga Oshakuade (Bsc, Msc, Phd) is a lecturer in physics department at University of Ibadan. Through him, the Wikimedia club at the university has used his department for some of our meetings. It'll be interesting to see how he's been adopting Wikimedia in the teaching of physics, and what other African stakeholders in the educational sector can gain from it.
