Abstract:
The lack of LGBTQ+ representation on Wikimedia platforms is a significant issue, with many voices and stories remaining underrepresented. This panel discussion will explore the collaborative efforts between Queerpedia and Wiki for Human Rights to address these gaps. In this panel discussion, we will delve into the collaborative efforts between Queerpedia and the Wiki for Human Rights organization to address the significant lack of LGBTQ+ representation on Wikimedia platforms. By leveraging the strengths of both initiatives, this collaboration has successfully hosted contests to amplify and expand content related to LGBTQ+ topics, bringing invisibility to visibility through digital media engagements. The panel will feature representatives from Queerpedia and Wikimedia Foundation, who will share their experiences and insights on the challenges and successes of this collaboration. We will discuss the strategies employed to identify and fill content gaps, engage with local communities, and sustain a network of dedicated contributors. Additionally, the panel will highlight the importance of fostering partnerships with other organizations and groups to amplify impact and reach. Attendees will learn about the methods used to train and support volunteers, the technological tools implemented to streamline the editing process, and the outreach efforts aimed at increasing participation from diverse community representation. This session will provide a comprehensive understanding of how collaborative initiatives drive meaningful change and promote free knowledge and equity.
