Abstract:

With 2 dedicated global editions per year (and many other satellite events later), #1Lib1Ref was introduced to Wikimedians in January 2016. Based on the premise of One Librarian, One Reference, organizers estimated that if each librarian on the planet spent 15 minutes adding a citation, the combined effort would eliminate English Wikipedia's then backlog of 350,000 "citation needed" notices.

8 years, over 600 editors and more than 400 edit-a-thons later, the campaign has expanded to include contributions to Wikidata, extended participation beyond librarians, and has been the inspiration for other campaigns. Wikimedians in Africa and the world over have actively contributed to these successes, but what more does the campaign have to offer at such a time? Through the Global Office hour in January 2024, the organizers were able to engage the community and gather valuable perspectives on the future of #1Lib1Ref.
