Abstract:

Wiki Loves Africa was first launched in 2014 as a photo contest with the direct involvement of 5 nascent Wikimedia communities. Since this tentative beginning, it's impact on the Wikimedia movement across Africa has been far more than the 101,601 images that have been added to Wikimedia Commons in the last 8 editions. Wiki Loves Africa has become the foundation project where all kinds of communities cut their Wiki teeth and learn how to get involved. They learn all kinds of aspects from event management, community building, and marketing and social media campaigns, to how to manage a jury process. The skills set need to be involved has developed strong bonds and built communities that are more integrated in the larger movement.

The same is true for several other programs. Most recently, the Africa Knowledge Initiative put out a call for Wikimedia interventions around 3 strategic Africa Union holidays. The co-hosted Africa Environment WikiFocus was the selected project that foregrounded Wangari Mathaai Day. The project galvanised nascent and experienced Wikimedia communities across Africa. The focus on a specific subject matter assisted 17 communities to take part with microfunding. Many lessons were learnt in this process (and not only for the organisers!). The
