WikiGraphers: Visualizing Open Knowledge
With the financial support of Wikimedia Foundation (Alliances Fund) we have designed and implemented the “WikiGraphers: Visualizing Open Knowledge” project aimed at enriching visual content of Wikimedia projects. Over a period of eight months, twenty students were engaged in learning modern visualization tools and subsequently applied their acquired skills to visualize Wikipedia articles. Among the subjects taught within the program were Wiki Ideology and Wiki Editing, Creation of Data-Driven Infographics, Illustration/Animation and GIS Mapping.
By the end of the program students uploaded more than 500 visuals to the Wikimedia Commons.
An important aspect of the project was the integration of WikiGraphers within the wiki community. To achieve this, we organized two Hackathons, where active and experienced Wikipedians and project participants were brought together. These Hackathons not only facilitated the creation of new visuals to update the content of the articles but also fostered networking opportunities, knowledge sharing, and a collaborative environment to encourage ongoing collaboration between Wikipedians and project participants.
