WikiED MeetUp
This is the report about the WikiED Meet up.
1. Briefly describe how your strategies and activities proposed were implemented and if any changes to what was proposed are worth highlighting?
The strategy was to use this meeting to bring together old WIKIED volunteers with new ones, share experiences, update on happenings throughout the year and together discuss plans. The project team used several platforms to achieve this, such as social media, the local user group social media platforms, calls through volunteers, and others. In total 12 participants attended the physical engagement.
It was noted that the communication ought to have been sent out much earlier for maximum attendance.
2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you feel are being effective in achieving your goals?
Relying on the current volunteers to spread the message is one of the most effective tools.
3. What challenges or obstacles have you encountered so far?
Most of the attendees were first-timers to Wikimedia and also lacked the necessary computer skills to navigate the Internet and had no other gadget beyond a smartphone, this made it hard for them to make maximum contributions as needed.
4. Please describe how different communities are participating and being informed about your work.
WikiED primarily targets teachers and for this year we targeted secondary school teachers from both private and public schools. The overall attendance shows a good representation from both types of schools.
5. Please share reflections on how your efforts are helping to engage participants and/or build content, particularly for underrepresented groups.
Going open with invitation to teachers from seconadry schools in Uganda has made it possible for teachers from schools outside the usual central region to be part of this movement. The project managed to have attendees from the Central, western and eastern regions of Uganda.
7. What are the next steps and opportunities you’ll be focusing on for the second half of your work?
