- Abstract (maximum 500 words)
When it comes to handling Personal Finance i.e. Banking, Investments, Insurance, Loans etc. many people find it difficult to get information that is credible, simple and one that helps in taking action. For many people it's a phobia of doing anything with 'numbers and finance'. But actually, basics of personal finance are very simple. Many times it is in the interest of the financial services providers to make things complex and confusing so that common people turn to 'experts' and pay a heavy 'price'. Ask any honest person you know in the financial services industry to understand this point I’m trying to make or just watch this film to know how the US Financial Crisis happened, which also affected other parts of the world, including India: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_Job_(film)
There are also individuals and organizations in the financial service industry who genuinely want to make things simple and transparent. But several factors ranging from stiff competition and business bias to lack of long-standing commitment and prioritization that have stopped them to solve this problem effectively.
Is it time for common people to use the power of Wiki and online social media to create a knowledge base of simple and credible information on personal finance that is of-the-people, for-the-people and by-the-people? Or can common people and financial organizations collaborate to make a difference? I’d like to make a presentation on how this can be done and take feedback from other Wikipedians.
