With the coining of the term “Web 3.0” by John Markoff, there has been no looking back. When semantic technologies emerged a few years ago, people started talking about how semantic web or search could prove to be a Google killer. This is because semantic search can deliver more relevant results because it "knows" the content. Today, one can easily find startups applying semantic overlay to information to create a search engine with intelligent capabilities and features. Innovation will soon outrank the ‘Page Rank’ search technology of Google in order to create more personalized search results.
Wikipedia holds a sui generisis position. With a strong community behind its input and management, the website has more human potential than any other webgiant on earth. Moreover, Powerset’s unique infusion of natural language processing techniques to Wikipedia’s articles is testimony to the fact that its repository is unique and beneficial in multifarious ways.
This paper will discuss the emergence of Web 3.0 and how this will revolutionise the way one uses internet. The researcher believes that internet will then act as a ‘Personal assistant’ to users and Wikimedia is in a very strong position to take the lead in the development in this regard. Techniques like mashing and folksonomy developed in Web 2.0 will also be extremely beneficial in this endeavor while yet starting afresh. This paper will also address the view that innovation is shifting back from front-end improvements towards back-end infrastructure level upgrades to the web. It is not disputed that such an initiative is already underway; however a lot still needs to be done.
