Liability and accident insurance

For community events in Germany, Wikimedia Deutschland offers a third-party liability and accident insurance. It covers both participants and organizers.

Scope of insurance

Accident insurance for volunteer groups

  • Insured activities: recreational activities
  • Additional risks: Mining tunnels, inter alia; activities with increased risk (please contact us in advance by e-mail)
  • Risks and benefits: Death, disability, recovery costs, cosmetic surgery, treatment costs

Accident insurance covers so-called commuting accidents, including accidents occurring on route between the involved person’s home and the registered event.

You can find a detailed description of the accident insurance for volunteer groups in this pdf (German only).

Liability insurance for volunteer organizers

Those claims are insured which arise in connection with activity directly related to voluntary work for open knowledge within the context of an event/activity registered with WMDE. You can find a detailed description of a similar liability insurance for organizers here (in German only) (the originally obtained policy is no longer available online). Both insurances are valid worldwide, apart from war zones.

Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers are not translated here.

Approach

If you would like to obtain insurance, send an e-mail prior to the event to community@wikimedia.de, mentioning the location and the date of the event, the approximate number of expected participants, and providing the link to the on-wiki project page. The event is insured once you receive a confirmation. This is also indicated by the insurance-template on the project page. The insurance coverage is only valid for the registered event. Please report to us any significant changes at your earliest opportunity to ensure that the insurance coverage is not compromised. After the event, please indicate the number of people who were actually present.

In case of damage: If there is an actual case of damage, please report it to community@wikimedia.de. You do not need to explain the details of what happened – only let us know if the incident concerns an accident or a case of liability. We'll then send you the appropriate form for the insurance.

Documentation

Please tell us and others about your experiences, for example on a subpage of your user page and link them here (in German only). By doing so, you will on the one hand help the Wikimedia organizations to understand the benefits of the support initiative; on the other, your experiences can be helpful to others.
