View it! Tool/Wikimania notes

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

On Saturday, August 13, 2022 the team did an in-person presentation & conversation at Wikimania-Pittsburgh meetup.

Presentation: "Discoverability, Structured Data & the View it! tool"

Attendees: There were four editors in attendance

Discussion:

Appearance

  • Opening as an info box or a slide show would probably be the most user-friendly
  • What about appearing as a link along side the image of the article?

Prominence and image quality

  • There are many repetitive images - how can we ensure variety and not the same images over and over?
    • Possible filtering for photos uploaded the same day/from the same source (to avoid repetition)
  • Would there be a randomizing option? If not enough variety is showing, a random button would create a different set.
  • Would "mark as prominent" influence ranking?
  • For articles with images already in them, would there be a prompt for "higher quality, higher resolution image available"?

Interface

  • Be able to add other data relationships like creator (P170) or location (location of creation,P1071) (Collection creator P6241) (possibly as a drop down box?)(ex. Obama campaigning in a certain location
    • Also, "works of" or "creations of"
  • Workflow: stay within the editing UI, have the ability to search with depicts statements and then be able to click something and have it either enter the Wikitext markup (basically give the options Commons UI gives you)
    • Potentially populate the caption if there is a description file
