[edit]Congrats on the win 99.244.204.251
Hello Wing! I wonder how to establish contact to you. Could you be so kind and drip me your mail address at my mail address glimburg@munich.com ? thanks a lot!
FYI
[edit]please see Translation requests/Wikimania/Zh: for page and template translation, thanks.
About the translation of term "panel", please discuss it on page Talk:Translation requests/Wikimania/Zh:. --Yongxinge 15:46, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi, Wing! Thanks a lot for your smart organizing, amazingly rapid translation! Your work, specially of Yongxinge and you, is great. I would like you to check this page. Already I checked Zh working pages and found many anonymous edit. I wonder if you can give me their user names (many people edits here anonymously, even they usually edit as registered users). I wouldn't like to miss anyone's name on this list. Cheers, --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 14:32, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
On-line version of civilization chronology published
[edit]I found a news story via Xinhua indicating that "A massive on-line chronology of Chinese civilization was initiated here [Beijing] Thursday to allow the public to input and edit all the historical documents dating from ancient times through 1911 when the Republic of China was founded."
The news story is sparse on details, however. I was wondering if you would be willing to find out a few things about it, such as what the URL for this new site is, where I can find more about the "China Culture Research Society" and whether or not it is a government organization (the term does not show up once in Google English). I appreciate your help! reflectiongmail.com --Alterego 15:53, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

Blocking of wikipedia
[edit]I'm curious, has there been any inquiry regarding the blocking of wikipedia? Presumably it should be possible to get some kind of official response from the government, or am I being naive? (I wrote you because you are listed as ambassador of your wiki). If you'd like to reply, please leave it on my wikipedia page, since I don't log in on meta regularly. Cheers, Jacoplane 17:56, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
The Wikipedia Signpost -- Interwiki Report
[edit]Hi,
There is a new feature in The Wikipedia Signpost called The Interwiki Report that is about reporting from Wikipedias other than the English.
There have been already been reports from German and Polish Wikipedias, the next is French.
We'd like to have a report from the Chinese Wikipedia ready for August 14th issue of The Signpost.
Could you please put together the report for the Chinese Wikipedia ?
Please keep me informed if you can make it or not. Alternatively could you please forward this message to someone you know could do it ?
I'll try to contact other Chinese ambassador but could you put up a note at the Chinese Village Pump page.
Please leave me messaages here.
Regards,
Kpjas 20:47, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

G'day Candidate!
[edit]First I thought I'd offer a thank you for being brave / foolish enough to put your hat in the ring as a candidate for election to the Wikimedia Board of Trustees! - I wonder if you might have any time, interest, and enthusiasm to record a brief 10 / 15 minute audio interview about yourself / the reasons for your candidature / your wiki philosophy etc. etc. ? - I've been promoting a project on the english wikipedia called NotTheWikipediaWeekly - which is a grassroots effort to promote good communications through (semi) regular 'podcasts'.
If you have a couple of moments free, would you mind taking a look at this page and signing up if you're interested! It'd be great to chat with each and every one of you, and I hope you'll be amenable to this idea! Let me know if you've any questions at all, thought perhaps my english wikipedia talk page is the best spot.
The best of luck, and kind regards,

Plannning the 'real world' conversation
[edit]Thanks for both your interest and patience in setting up an audio conversation - I'm afraid I've found myself both 'real world' busy, and it took me a moment to figure out what the best way forward in organising these conversations could be.
I've created a 'sign up' sheet over at User:Privatemusings/ElectionDiscussions - which it would be great if you could peruse, and sign up at a suitable time. The times are in 'UTC' (which I gather is the official 'wiki' time) - but if you have any problems converting, there's a seperate section for you to simply drop the appropriate information in. I already have many of you as Skype contacts - but if you haven't forwarded this information so far, you can submit that at this time also.
I'm aiming to publish this podcast on 6th June - and believe (and hope!) that it might raise the profile of the election a little bit, as well as humanising the people behind the screen names a little. Thanks for your willingness to engage with this - head over here as soon as possible, and let's get chatting! cheers, Privatemusings 05:22, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Ciao, My name is francesco, i am italian. I am interested about what you say for your candidature. I like the fact that you want to preserve differences, i think that difference = richness too. In it.wiki* there are many user writing in italian-english, expecially for articles about technology (client-server instead of the italian cliente-servente etc)... I just would like to know what do you think about founds gain for wikipedia. some say they want to allow sponsors, other just want to consider private donations. And you? Sorry for my bad english, i hope you understood. Thanks. Francesco
Non-free content
[edit]Thanks for your response at Board elections/2008/Candidates/Questions/3#Non-free content. I had cited a paragraph of the Definition of Free Cultural Works that the Foundation has adopted. You responded by saying both "I don't think that we need to change our licencing policy." and "The text you cited is too radical for me."
This leaves me a bit confused. Do you support adopting a less radical definition than the Foundation currently has, or are you content with the currently adopted definition? —Remember the dot 18:06, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- (responding to message on my talk page) - Thank you for your reply. If elected, would you work to remove POV statements such as the one I pointed out from the Foundation's adopted definition of free content? Remember the dot 04:01, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- (responding to message on my talk page) - Would you actually take action and propose removing the POV material from the foundation's copy of the definition, or just wait for someone else to propose it (if they ever did)? Remember the dot 04:26, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Quartile energy
[edit]It has been dormant. I have been thinking the same thing since Wikimania, however. We still have our irc channel. I was thinking specifically about running a two-month "how to publish a newsletter" session during the production of the next edition, to help train newbies in what is involved. +sj | help with translation |+ 08:47, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- I think we could do much better in terms of parallel translations today, since we actually have so many more talented multilingual people -- but somehow we have fewer multilingual communication channels. One of the difficulties in sustaining interest in the Quarto process was the lack of other many-language efforts other than the translation of the week. Some sort of brief announcements that are little more than an exercise in 30-language synchronized publishing might help there. +sj | help with translation |+ 08:52, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
I think you speak of two very critical points. The one is recruiting authors, the other is translating. How was these done in the past? On the authoring side I am thinking of invite people write articles, and I would also accept people write articles in their own language and try to find translators to do the translation for them. How do you think of this?--Wing 13:36, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- To recruit, one should target four groups : authors, translators, designers, and [copy]editors/proofreaders. The translators do more work than anyone, but it is easy to schedule and can be split up across dozens of people. Authors can be harder to find, and this requires people with some real interest in writing a complete piece -- as you note, it should be in their native language, or the one in which it is easiest to compose. Designers have an interesting task, and for the right people, an enjoyable one -- giving more attention to great images and media, and laying out the text flow around them. Copyeditors in each language need to make sure the articles make sense, and have no typos or broken links. Final editors need to see that the whole work is balanced and meaningful, to keep individual people in touch with one another, and to maintain the schedule.
- We recruited by writing to the quarto and translators mailing lists, and to individual project lists to ask for article ideas. Today, as there are more individual project-level publications, I would start by contacting some of those groups first, and starting a discussion with them before making the broader call for participation. +sj | help with translation |+ 21:48, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Wing, On your comment in the mailing list [1]:
Please consider that "No Original Research" is refers mostly to the information and not so much the way you write it; otherwise all translation, and even many a wikipedia article, would contain a lot of original "research". Hillgentleman 05:22, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Attribution of GFDL-licensed content on Wikipedia for Schools
[edit]Hi Ting - I hope your term as Trustee is going well. I just read a blog post from Danny Wool here that points out, quite correctly, that the content of Wikipedia for Schools does not comply with the GFDL's requirements. Proposal: The general rules of language use in Wikimedia
[edit]Hello, Wing!
I am a professional anthropologist and at the same time, a man with considerable experience as a politician and as a party to legal conflicts. I am very interesting by those most bitter conflicts in the Wikipedia community around the creation of Wikipedia in those or other languages. This, in particular, the sharp conflicts over language: Volapük, Lombardian, Siberian, Klingon, Quenya, Toki Pona, Moldovan.
[I note that the closing pages of the Moldovan and Siberian languages was partly inspired by political motives, respectively, the representatives of Romanian and Russian languages. There is no doubt in the existence of a group of Siberian dialects of the Russian language, and there is no doubt in the existence of a formal written language, which was called "Moldovan" and was considered different from Romanian.]
I believe that decisions on these matters do not meet many of the panellists. This means that the problem of the continued functioning of languages of the Wikipedia needs more regulation. Should be introduced simple and obvious rules, which could satisfy all. Moreover, these rules should be considered obvious and fair to all members of the Wikipedia community.
These rules I have set out in the form of a few simple and universal legal norms. These rules have a few sources.
Main source: These rules follow from the main purpose of Wikipedia. The purpose of Wikipedia - creating the most complete and high quality on-line version of the encyclopedia in all languages of the Earth.
Second source: own practice of the Wikipedia community (especially the Language committee) in dealing with such issues, the presence in the practice of historical precedents.
The third source: the general universal principles of law that have proved themselves throughout the history of mankind, and which recognized the basic legal systems of almost all States, except in the most odious dictatorships. In this case there are two such universal principles:
1) A person shall not be liable for the acts of illegality which he could not have known. In particular, it should not be punished for acts which at the time they were committed were not illegal.
2) If people are free to enjoy certain rights, these rights they can not be taken away or limited. This is a very important universal principle, which dictates the obvious solution of a number of the most violent conflicts in the Wikipedia community.
Based on this latter principle, those languages that already have existing Wikipedia pages, or who have already obtained the right to create such pages in the wiki-Incubator, in any case can not be denied the right to own Wikipedia.
Because of this legal principle should be necessary to reopen the languages of the Wikipedia: Klingon, Toki Pona, Moldovan and Siberian.
On the other hand, these Wikipedias have been closed due to fair and honest reasons. So we must not allow the emergence of similar pages in the future. For this purpose, and should be taken these guidelines.
The general rules of language use in Wikimedia
A. Rules of use of existing languages in Wikimedia
1) Any language of Wikimedia may not be removed from it.
2) Administrators of each active Wikipedia in any language are obliged to care about the quality of Wikipedia articles. In particular, there is considered unacceptable the bot-creation of the main part of Wikipedia articles in any language.
In case of serious doubt as Wikipedia in this language guide Wikimedia Foundation may require the removal of all articles that have been bot-uploaded.
3) If necessary, bad-quality Wikimedia to correct the deficiencies can be returned to the Wiki-incubator.
4) In case if the language is used in two or more writing systems, separate sections for each type of writing is not created. Instead, is necessary to create a program that can translate the contents of any article on this language from one writing system into another.
We are welcoming the creation for any language of Wikipedia, program that gives the contents of articles into the International Phonetic Alphabet, as well as program that translates into the Latin transcription of the contents of articles in those languages, which made other writing systems.
B. Rules for the establishment of Wikipedia and Wiki-Incubator for new languages
1) In the Wikipedia and Wiki-incubator can be created sections in any native (living or dead) language, having the code ISO 639-3.
2) In the Wikipedia can be created partitions on any living language, not having the code ISO 639-3, if it satisfies the following conditions:
a) there are people for whom this language is native;
b) these language has a literature and electronic sites;
c) there is a scientific description of the language: its vocabulary and grammar;
d) The Wikipedia has pages devoted to this language in English and at least three other languages.
3) In the Wikipedia can be created sections on any recently extinct language, not having the code ISO 639-3, if it satisfies the following conditions:
a) The language died out not earlier than 1850;
b) there is a tutorial of the language;
c) these language has a literature and electronic sites;
d) there is the scientific description of the language: its vocabulary and grammar;
e) The Wikipedia has pages devoted to this language in English and at least three other languages.
4) In the Wikipedia can be created partitions on any dead language, not having the code ISO 639-3, if it satisfies the following conditions:
a) in that language existed and survived to the present day own rich literature;
b) there is a tutorial of the language;
c) these language has a modern literature and electronic sites;
d) there is the scientific description of the language: its vocabulary and grammar;
e) The Wikipedia has pages devoted to this language in English and at least three other languages.
5) All the languages that do not meet the criteria set out in paragraphs 1), 2), 3) and 4), are considered to be artificial.
In Wikipedia, there are sections of the following artificial (constructed) languages: Esperanto, Simple English, Ido, Novial, Intelingua, Interlingue (Occidental), Volapük, Lojban, Quenya, Klingon, Siberian, Toki Pona, and Lingua Franca Nova.
In the Wikipedia is not possible to create partitions on any other artificial languages.
As an exception, the decision to establish a section of Wikipedia in any other artificial language can be accepted Wikimedia Board of Trustees. In this case the language must meet all the requirements of paragraph 4) for the dead languages and have code ISO 639-3 and a level of development and popularity of not less than the Quenya in 2009.
6) If a native language has the code ISO 639-3, but does not satisfy the conditions about 2) or 3) or 4), proposal of this language can be rejected.
I believe that the adoption of these rules will remove all the stress and all the discussions around the language policy of Wikipedia.
My proposal regarding the registration of new languages
I don't propose “defining what makes a language”. If a language have own literature, this language is already defined as language by its writers, readers, editors and libraries. Every serious library takes account of each language separately. All modern libraries have electronic catalogs. If language has a website, this language is already defined as language by programmers.
There is website Ethnologue: “The purpose of the Ethnologue is to provide a comprehensive listing of the known living languages of the world. (…) Ancient, classical, and long-extinct languages are not listed (even though the ISO 639-3standard assigns codes to them), unless they are in current use (as in the scriptures or liturgy of a faith community)”.
So, I propose:
Profile (test questionnaire) for a new language of Wikipedia
1. Language name in English language.
2. Language name in native language.
3. Status of language: living, recently extinct, dead, artificial.
4. Its ISO 639-3 code (if exist).
5. Article about this language in English Wikipedia.
6. Articles about this language in three other Wikipedias.
7. Three some websites in this language.
8. Five modern (written at 20-21 century) books in this language with electronic catalogs of some libraries, where are these books.
9. Vocabulary of this language as a book with electronic catalog of library or as a website.
10. Grammar of this language as a book with electronic catalog of library or as a website.
For living languages:
11. Article about this language in website Ethnologue.
For recently extinct, dead, artificial languages:
12. Tutorial of the language as a book with electronic catalog of library or as a website.
For recently extinct languages:
13. Summary, that the language died out not earlier than 1850: quotations from authoritative sources (websites).
For dead languages:
14. Five published in 20-21 centuries books with ancient texts in this language, with electronic catalogs of some libraries, where are these books.
For artificial languages:
15. Educational institution with the state license, where this language is learned; with website of this institution.
16. Three different ongoing magazines in this languages with electronic catalogs of some libraries, where are these magazines.
If supporters of a new language are unable to complete the questionnaire, this language can not be accepted.

Wikimedia's Role in the evolution of Proper Governance for a Truly Constituted "United Nations"
[edit]Could a board meeting of Wikimedia consider the proposal to start off a "Constitution for Planet Earth" as a new wiki project.... but one where contributors are properly identified (real names) for their contributions, and everything is properly date-stamped.
The idea would be to get the ball rolling to write a constitution for the planet that is truly authored by ALL - it could be "mentored" (but by no means controlled) by the UN, G8 and G20 (but NOT by religions, political parties nor corporations) and be the exact "quantum leap" that is needed to allow the world to address the challenges it now faces.

Wikimedia CAT
[edit]Hello Ting,
in order to unblock the situation of Wikimedia CAT chapter, we have clarified and simplified the proposal at Wikimedia CAT.
We would highly appreciate that you could take a look at it and kindly give us your opinion at Survey. If you consider so, you can also express your support.
Thanks in advance. --Gomà 10:04, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Request
[edit]Dear user, I am a Wikipedia contributor in the Portuguese language and am requesting your intervention in the project. There exists among us a tremendous amount of intrigue, harassment, personal threats, inadequate block, clash of egos and power abuses. I can not stand such injustice, so many users with destructive behavior, so much political intrigue and partiality in administrators. The new users are intimidated and abandon the project, edit wars proliferate and the bad users try to silence their opponents with lock requests without foundation. Users with bad behavior are protected by administrators and users who try to expose corruption are blocked. The rule is trying to impose views and threaten to block those who disagree with arbitrariness. I am tired. This project is broken, please dismisses administrators and cancel their arbitrary actions, otherwise the credibility of Wikipedia is extinguished. Thank you.
PS: sorry, my english is not very good. Leandro LV 09:56, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
Which is more important: porn or world visibility?
[edit]Please see this question. It seems that the question is of vital importance with a large portion of people on Commons wanting absolutely no restrictions on pornography and how that comes in conflict with the vast majority of country laws regarding the matter. At the very least, the fact that we do not require proof of age or consent would have us in conflict with even US liberal laws regarding the matter and that ignores that we do not perform a necessary "are you over 18" opt in process that most liberal countries require. WM-CAT, Amical Viquipèdia
[edit]Dear,
let me introduce myself: I am a Catalan Wikipedian who, not only dedicated to write articles, also spends his time to promote the free knowledge and wiki tools where and how I can. For this reason I associate to Amical Viquipèdia amd I support the chapter WM-CAT. All this from the beech firmer conviction altruistically and voluntarily, spending my time and money.
As a Trustee of the foundation would ask me to answer these questions:
In relation to me:
- What's wrong with me?
- What's wrong with the group of people who make WM-CAT?
Regarding the promotion of knowledge Wikipedia and the free:
- Why should I stop before a line indicated on the map as I can share with people the other side of this, that speak, think and feel like me?
- Why can I not, along with those who speak, feel and think like me, be considered equal to others who feel and think like me?
In relation to the Foundation:
- when the various Foundation's committees have become more important than community?
- why people's interested in promoting the same that foundation aims to promote become a problem?
- When the foundation vision and values have gone down in the background?
- When the foundation has grown into something that can ignore Wikipedia principles?
Dear Wing, maybe my speech will seem harsh, but this is a discourse that comes from the heart and mind of one, as you, is convinced of the validity of the project but at the same time he sees That a right as basic as it should be made part of a group equal than others are denied.
Wing: When the Trustees left to be bold?
Yours,

I leave the missage in my matern language in order to avoid translation errors (my english is basic):

Question for current board members Re: May 2010 and Projects' Scope
[edit]I'm asking the same question of all current member seeking re-election. It concerns the "May 2010 'unpleasantness". In brief, Wales proposed that the board redefine all our projects' scope in a controversial way (specifically to exclude anything deemed 'pornographic'). Some board members strongly supported this idea, some opposed it from the outset, and some supported first and then opposed it after community feedback.
The question to you is pretty simple: which group were you in? Did you support or oppose the redefinition at the outset? If you changed your mind in May, when did you change your mind and what prompted it? Where are you on the issue now?
(I should say, how you acted in May 2010 is absolutely not a litmus test for me. Ultimately, it's how you're likely to act in the future that we care about.)
Long form:
In May 2010, Jimmy Wales announced and implemented a policy without prior community consensus. He made the following statement:
- This is not merely the advice of one person. I don't intend to deadmin anyone - but I will. The order of operation here is going to be that we first [implement the new policy], and then we can open a broader discussion about [how to apply that policy]. I just don't want anyone to get the impression that we're going to have an open vote [on the policy]. We aren't. It isn't going to happen. This is not a democratic debate, this is policy. [2]
When pressed, Wales further clarified:
- I am in constant communication with both the board and Sue Gardner about this issue, yes. I expect the board to issue a statement within a few days offering a general philosophical support for the serious enforcement of policy on this issue. [3]
Ultimately, the forthcoming board statement was quite clear that it no new policy has, in fact, been authorized. So my question is-- who was Wales in communication with, such that he believed his actions would be vindicated by the board? Who endorsed the idea that one individual, or even one handful of individuals, should be able to unilaterally declare a new policy of that magnitude?
The specific question over images isn't the "real issue"-- there's a legitimate diversity of views on that question. The big issue, to me, was that in May 2010, we learned some minority within the board had come to feel that board votes, not community consensus, should be able to redefine the projects and their policies in controversial ways.
In the interest of transparency and openness, perhaps the community should have learned by now who stood where during the events of May 2010. But given all the emotions running high during that time, it didn't seem prudent to actually ask. So long as board members didn't run for re-election, they had a good claim to "put the past behind them and just move on" with taking care of business. But now that the community has to decide whether to re-elect you, so I think that means it's time to for you to show your hand. Where were you on things and when?
Specifically:
- Where did you stand on this issue before Jimbo's announcement on May 6? Did you endorse or oppose his stated plan?
- Where did you stand on the issues during the interim when Jimbo was implementing his new policy? Did you endorse or oppose his actions?
- Where did you stand on the issue during the board resolution vote? Did you advocate for the resolution that was more in support of Jimbo's new scope definition, or did you advocate for a version based on the status quo 'educational' test?
- Do you feel differently now, or wish you'd acted differently, or have learned anything from those experiences?
Alecmconroy 07:05, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
As a followup to you personally, I really want to apologize for even having to ask this question. You're the only candidate who's publicly admitted to supporting Jimbo's purge before it occurred, so I know this question will fall most heavily on your shoulders. I just want to say though-- I strongly respect that you admitted to it back in May, when others on the board were being less transparent. Aside from this issue, I have no complaints about your performance in your very difficult job. I want to reiterate I don't think badly of you as a person or anything like that. On this one particular issue, I'm just not sure if you share the community's views or not.
You don't have to prove anything to me, but if you wanted to help assuage concerns like mine, here's a few things that might help:
- When Jimmy sent you the email outlining his plans, just what did he say he was going to do? That is, what precisely did you think you were supporting? If you share (with permission) those emails, the concerns might evaporate-- I get the feeling that deletions of artworks and other educational content was never mentioned. If you gave him your support to do something less controversial than what he actually did, that helps us see that your support of him itself is far less controversial.
- A member who's already learned from community feedback and been responsive to the community is infinitely more valuable than an untested candidate. Eventually, the board realized that Jimmy's approach was the wrong one, and we returned to the consensus status quo. If you were one of the board members who had that realization and subsequently acted to help return us to status quo, then you might consider quoting your past emails in support of a return to status quo. That would also go a long way towards evaporating concerns.
My distinct impression is that you had no idea what you were signing up for when you gave Jimbo your support. I don't think he told you he would delete images that were in-use in articles, historic artwork, or other educational images. I suspect that when the initial backlash came, you basically tried to be a good team player and support your team-mate, like you promised you would when he asked for support. Most of all, I suspect that at some point in time, you realized that Jimbo's actions were too radical and too controversial, and that they needed to stop.
If I'm wrong and you still support all his actions, then your answer is simple. But if I'm right, and you're somebody who supported what turned out to be a controversial idea but ultimately learned from the experience-- then please please help us see that transition and when it happened. I think most people would value the skill of 'changing your mind in response to community feedback' every bit as much as we value 'being right the first time around'.

- Hello Alecmconroy,
- at first let me explain my version of the event, it is a little different as yours and so I cannot answer your questions with simple yes or nos. After I have explained my version of the event, I will try to address your question or what I think you are interested in. It will again not be a simple yes or no. More I will explain my philosophy in this and similar situations.
- The board is the representation of the Foundation and the projects. The board's role is to keep our values and to keep every danger out of our movement. Some times these two duties are conflicting, sometimes our different values conflict with each other. In those times the board and the individual board members face their most difficult decisions.
- As far as remember back, Jimmy never said to the board that he is going to change the rules. In the spring of 2010 Jimmy informed the board that there are danger threating the Foundation and our project because there were certain media companies researching possible implication of Wikimedia Commons is used as a safe harbour for pedophils and for pornography. There are always conflicts on media files hosted on Commons, individual deletion flames up from time to time. The reason can be cultural, political, religious. Jimmy thinks that some files hosted on Commons have no or scarcely educational value and thus can be deemed as pure pornographical. I agree with him in this statement and I use presence here deliberately because I still agree with him in the obove statement as thus. Jimmy told the board that he has support from the community to clean these files up and I told him he has my support. That was what happened before the deletion of Jimmy.
- I don't agree with all his deletions. I believe some of them are wrong, some of them are correct. As an admin on zh-wp I made and will always make wrong deletion or deletion requests. That happens, I have no problem to admit my fail. What I don't approve is Jimmy threated other users. I never acted that way. I had always handled other users in a respectful way, however their opinion differ from me. I am from time to time flamed on my talk page, accused either as a chinese traitor or as a communist spy, I was flamed because I am open gay. I was flamed just two weeks ago on German Wikipedia as a stalinistic (the user was grateful enough to remove maoistic after I had pointed out how inappropriete that is) functionair. I never blocked or requested a block of a user because they insulted me, because in my opinion there should be no "Lèse majesté" in our movement.
- I work with Jimmy a few times now. I know Wikpedia is his passion, a passion that I must confess I don't have, not in the dimension as he has anyway. Jimmy makes failures, he is just another human being. What I always find remarkable is, that he admits his failures, despite of his nobility and his unique position as the founder or co-founder or whatever. Sometimes he need some time to recognize his failure, but if he got to that point, he never tried to duck himself or steal away from his responsibility. I know a lot of people, and most people don't have this quality. This is why I respect him alot. I believe Jimmy saw his failure and this is the reason why he stepped back from this topic and handed it over to the board.
- As far as I remember, the entire board believes that we have a problem and we should solve that problem. Anyway this is my opinion until today. I believe the whole board had agreed unanimously to initiate the Controversial Content Workgroup.
- This is the event how I experienced it. As I said, I cannot remember that there were ever a discussion about redefine our projects. Since there were no such discussion, I cannot support or not support it, thus I cannot answer your question about support this idea with a yes or no.
- Now I want to address your last question. I assume your question is not about redefine the projects (as there were no such discussion), but about what is about what content should we host and what not.
- Let me at first again come back to the question about to whom is the board responsible. To whom is the Board of Trustees of a non-profit organization responsible?
- The Board of Trustees of a non-profit organization is ENTRUSTED by the public to responsible to the mission of that organization. The board is not responsible to the donors, not to the users, not even to the community. The duty of the board is to keep the organization do what is defined in its mission.
- Our mission is clearly stated: "The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally. In collaboration with a network of chapters, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission. The Foundation will make and keep useful information from its projects available on the Internet free of charge, in perpetuity."
- Every decision I make I make it by starting with the question, is this what helps our mission or not.
- For me our mission is not about to export the western value about free speech or free culture to the rest of the world. What we want to do is the following: First to get every mankind to join our movement, and second, to collect educational content, and third, to keep it free for every mankind of the world. We see a lot of conflicts between people and cultures in the world. For me our mission is not to support this or that side, but to work out a way that will include all sides. We are going to actively recruit those part of the world, which have a different culture as our home culture, and I don't want us to act as the 21st century crusaders. We must respect other people, we must respect that they may have other values. We must respect that we cannot maintain our fullset of values and impose them upon the other. This is the background for me to make my decisions in this case.
- Keep images with marginal education value but would rebuck a lot of people from other cultures, religious believes or values will only add a very small amount of value to us but we will lost a lot from losing those people. Why should we do that? Just so that we can say we had kept our own value? For me it is not worth of it.
- For images with real educational value but would rebuck people from other cultures, religious believes or values we will work on technical solutions to ease the conflict. At the end we will still have the conflicts. But if that conflict only includes the most radical part of the people from the other cultures, religious believes or values, than it is for me a doable solution.
- I am sorry for make such a long answer and cannot simply answer your simple questions. But I hope I can make my position more clear on this point.--Wing 12:05, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
- No apologies at all-- longer answers are almost always better anyway. Thank you for the answer-- you and I have may have slightly different views of our mission and larger differences over theoretical nature of the role of board member, but you've stepped up to the plate, you sat in the chair, and in all my dealings with you, you've always been respectful, honest, and are always capable of explaining an easily comprehensible rationale explaining how your actions reflect you doing what you sincerely believe would be best. Questions to Board candidates
[edit]Based on the statistics concerning the number of pages read in previous years' Q&As, I infer that few voters take them into account. Personally, I see it as a very interesting exercise despite the fact that we the candidates are also the main readers. I believe it is a unique type of debate among us that is especially interesting.
I have noticed that User Alecmconroy suggested a very interesting series of questions on strategic issues. They can be seen here: User talk:Alecmconroy#More questions for Board Candidates (or others). I have given my opinion, I see you have made some comments too.
I wish you the best possible result in these elections and, if you agree, I suggest that we continue having this type of debate regardless of who is chosen.
Cheers and good luck.--Gomà 09:14, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
Help compile Objective Data about the Candidates
[edit]Posted to all candidates talk page:
To aid in the fair evaluation of all the candidates, especially those not active on EnWiki, verifiable data about the candidates is being compiled. Anyone is invited to help compile the data since it is all publicly available on-wiki.
But since the people best qualified to help are the candidates themselves, it seems reasonable to ask:
- Which languages do you speak? (voter statement)
Chinese, German, English, a little French, and knowledge of Japanese
- Which projects do you contribute to?
- For each, when was your first edit?
According to this at Jan. 21st 2003. Maybe a little earlier as anonymous user, not sure.
- For each, how many total edits? (exact figures not need)
The total data is here: http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=wing
- Which projects are you an admin on?
zh-wp
- Are you a bureaucrat? which projects? when?
zh-wp, hm, sometime like 2006? not sure
- Are you a CheckUser? Which projects? When did you start??
No
- Are you a steward? If so when were you made one?
No
- Have you served in a verifiable leadership role on a project? (e.g. Like EnWiki's Founder or Arbcom member)
Well, I dare say that I helped to build up the Chinese Wikipedia and had set some footprint there.
- Have you served in a verifiable leadership role on at the Chapter or Foundation level? (Trustee, etc)
Trustee of the Foundation
Are there any objectively verifiable facts that should be included in this guide but aren't?
(Incidentally, this document won't reflect my own personal values or wikipolitical opinions. Ideally it will come to exist outside of my userspace in some neutral, visible location. -- Alecmconroy)

Yes on Ting!!!
[edit]Dear Ting, I have update my 'voter guide' to include the following, and then added a bit.
My original guide raised objections to Ting, thus I feel especially called to honestly praise him in this same space.
Ting is an amazing person who does his job well. He is always straightforward, he tells you what he thinks, he means what he says, and he can always clearly explain his reasoning. I disagreed with him over the theory of what role the board should play in some limited instances, but I've never ever doubted Ting is great person and a truly great asset to our movement. Time and again, I communicate with people who've met Ting, and they invariably say absolutely great things about his character-- nothing in the entire time I've interacted with him have I ever seen anything that would suggest anything to the contrary.
Ting is great great guy, and there's no doubt he will continue to be one of Wikimedia's brightest stars and greatest treasures, regardless of whether he winds up serving his next term on the board of trustees or the board of advisers. Ting's done great things in WM and I have no doubt Ting will continue to excel and amaze us in the future.
I just want you to know that I truly and sincerely like you, and if the global community picked you, I will not be tearing my hair at all. I have a major disagreement with you over a few minor points, but I completely trust your character. I wish this election had had a robust discussion so we could see which version of the board member role the global community wants, but I don't know there was any substantive global discussion on this point or not.
Anyway, I also want you to know that though you weren't at the top of my ballot, you certainly were near the bottom either. I very much worry your role of the board philosophy could ultimately lead to a movement-shattering schism between the foundation and the movement-- but I trust you completely to act honorably according to how you see best.
Additionally, you have no idea how heartache your honesty this election saved me. When I saw you were running for re-election, I assumed (American that I am), that you were planning on saying "I made a mistake last May, I've learned from it". And then we would have all had the arduous and emotionally unpleasant task of trying to decide if you were an honest man who'd learned from the past, or a dishonest man telling the electorate what it wanted to hear. I know I would have leaned towards the former, given what else I know about you, but your honesty left zero doubt about where you stood and why you stood there. And that earned a lot of respect from me, and I'm sure anyone else who was watching.
I also want you to know I'm not 'fixated' on the May 2010 issue-- it's just that's the only real time when I felt like I really knew the movement leadership screwed up in a clear, objective way. I tried very very hard to get more datapoints, but ultimately May 2010 was the only real insight I had into the individual board members.
Well, you've been here since forever and I only know of one case where you screwed up? That doesn't make you a villain, that makes you a hero of the highest order. The worst I can say is that you'd be more helpful to us in a different role, and that's absolutely the worst thing I have to say about you. In May 2010, your friend and leader asked you for your support, you supported him, and you did so because you felt it was your job to do so. I've advocated for you to switch jobs because of it, but I never ever would advocate against you personally or against you having a leadership role in our movement.
Good Luck, Ting. If you win, I promise to do my best to help you be the best board member you can be-- I doubt you'll need any help, but I want you to know ahead of time, that I support you as a person, and we could do far worse than having you on our board. --Alecmconroy 22:32, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

-- Sameboat (talk) 01:05, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
關於Upright
-- Sameboat (talk) 22:07, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Clean Up
[edit]Dear Ting Chen,
I note that some articles are being "cleaned up" because the contribution of Islamic scholars is being "over stated". It may that such clean up is necessary but what objective tests are applied to judge this over-statement.
Having grown up in the UK there is no doubt that the Europeans tend to understate the contribution of non-Western civilizations. What processes are in place to ensure proper balance?

Trouble with Midom
[edit]Hi Wing, Sorry to disturb, but sometimes it's difficult to understand where to ask for help... At the Occitan wikipedia we are having trouble with user Midom, who is probably somewhat linked to the foundation (at least his account seems to be linked to the foundation). I'm just seeking an advice on how to proceed in case of true trouble. In fact, Midom deleted a dozen of templates that are serving around 10,000 pages (about locations in Occitania) on the Occitan wp. I restored the templates and blocked him for one week to give him time to explain his action. Note his user page at us states: if you see me coming, run. Thanks in advance for your help. Hello I am new in wikipedia and interesting in LGBT related topics too. Recently i added new article called <The flavor of corn>. Its about nice Italian LGBT related film created at 1986. But my article was declined becouse of abcent of external links. To my opinion this is not fair, becouse I mentioned the page from IMD. Please help me to approve this article and make it better. Wikimedia LGBT
[edit]Wikimedia LGBT+ | ||
Wikimedia LGBT+ is a proposed thematic organization that seeks to promote the development of content on Wikimedia projects which is of interest to LGBT+ communities. Proposed activities include outreach at LGBT events, Wikimania and other Wikimedia events, an international campaign called Wiki Loves Pride, and work on safe space policies, among other collaborations and interwiki projects. Active Wikimedians are welcome to join this cause! Please consider adding your name as a participant/supporter. Current tasks include translating pages, building a strong framework here at Meta, and achieving user group status (with the eventual goal of becoming a thematic organization). Your feedback is welcome on the discussion page. |

WM CUG Greece
[edit]Hi! Following your message here. Our User Group is still active, at least at the same level. We still have the same number of members. In the last year we were still engaged in Wikipedia Education Program projects [4] and a member of us has attended the Wikimedia Central and Eastern Europe meetup in Kiev. Back in April we did some preparations for the Wiki Loves Earth contest, but we were late and finally didn't manage to do it. But it is in our plans for this year (we'll start earlier). Of course we will continue and expand our Education Program projects and we also plan a separate series of workshops called "Wikilabs". We hope that we will create more cooperations with other universities, municipalities and free software groups for more activities. -Geraki TL 07:45, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Pride
[edit]You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!
- What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
- When? June 2015
- How can you help?
- 1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
- 2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
- 3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)
Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.
Thanks, and happy editing!

Did you ever attend Wikimania with your money? Talk to us!
[edit]TL;DR: Fill a short Wikimania survey, it takes 5 min.
Hi, I'm writing you because you are listed in Wikimania/Frequent attendees. As you probably know by now, Wikimania 2016 Esino Lario wants to achieve a Wikimania format which allows people to "get things done" and leave the conference fully satisfied with the result of their investment of time and other resources (see pillars 2 and 4: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Pillars ). For this purpose, we consider all audiences (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2016_bids/Esino_Lario/Program#Target ).
Participants other than scholarship recipients and reimbursed representatives are one group we heard very little from, but we think they are important because: 1) they have financial resources and help make the Wikimania budget sustainable; 2) they have motivation to share and ideas on what makes Wikimania valuable.
We set up a form mainly to collect names of some such people and talk with them later: if you provide your contact, we may write you on this topic. We may release aggregate data from the resposes; data will be handled by us and the Wikimania 2016 fiscal sponsor "Ecomuseo delle Grigne" (under EU law). Please fill the whole form, it's short!
Feel free to forward this invite to anyone.
Thanks,
Federico Leva and Martin Rulsch

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review
[edit]I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.
All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,
