[edit]Hello Thinker78,
Many thanks for participating in the WPWP campaign.
We are glad about the level of participation, this year and we are excited to inform you that over 900 volunteers around the world added photos to more than 250,000 articles in 298 languages Wikipedia. This year, we surpassed the 2020 edition's milestone by over 170%.
We are in the process of evaluating the WPWP campaign this year and we need your help. We'd love to get your feedback. Your feedback will allow us to better meet your expectations for the campaign in the next editions.
Please complete a brief survey so that we may learn about your participation in the campaign, strengths, challenges and your expectations. This information will enable us to improve the next editions of the Campaign.

Re: Email
[edit]Account cannot be globally blocked, so I don't understand your private request for a global unlock, please provide more details. If, as I think, your IP is blocked or globally blocked, and you need to edit on commons, ask for an IP block exemption there. Thanks Superpes15 (talk) 09:40, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Superpes15 I got an automatic notice in Commons that I was blocked from editing because I was using open proxy and that you blocked my ip.
- “ Your IP address is in a range that has been blocked on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis.
- The block was made by Superpes15. The reason given is Open proxy" ”
. - Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 20:27, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I can grant you a global IP block exemption but, if the IP is locally blocked, you can't edit anyway. The best way should be to request a IP block exemption on commons (as explained here), unless you have to edit on multiple projects. Please let me know (if you need to share more private details just tell me, I will reply to your email, thanks)! Superpes15 (talk) 20:55, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- I do edit in multiple Wikimedia projects. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 21:03, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Superpes15 Thinker78 (talk) 03:51, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- You should explain if you have a valid reason to use a open proxy and, in case of private information, you can also contact me privately! Superpes15 (talk) 11:03, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Superpes15 I am of the strong opinion that anyone should use open proxy without giving any explanations. Unfortunately, I understand that's not the case in Wikipedia by policy. Probably the administrator who was threatened with jail in France was not using open proxy, because who would have thought the government of a free country would target Wikipedia editors?
- In my case, an administrator in the English Wikipedia provided me with ip-block exempt out of personal initiative, without demanding valid reasons, if I remember correctly. I guess you question their motives if seeing that I have such ip-block exempt status you still demand valid reasons. Feel free to contact them. But in the meantime, can you provide me with valid reasons as to your valid reasons request? What's the policy behind it if you see I already have exemption in Wikipedia? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 23:24, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- I don't understand the controversy, I stick to the procedure and policies, proxies are not allowed here and the global exemption can be grated only "if you need to use Tor/proxies for valid reasons" (and not if another sysop on another project granted you a local flag - this is a global flag and should be evaluated and granted by stewards). I can not know why you have a local exemption and I don't have to ask a enwiki sysop for their reasons (neither they are required to provide me with these reasons), since you want a global flag (which is another process), so you should be the one to clarify your reasons for the flag. I just follow the procedure, and imho it's better at this point if you ask for the flag on UTRS, following the formal procedure, when your reasons will be evaluated by one or more stewards! Superpes15 (talk) 23:42, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Superpes15 Before I follow up elsewhere, i would like to keep the process with you until its proper completion because I contacted you following instructions to contact the steward/administrator who placed the block and you are implicitly denying my request, so I would as you can reasonably expect know the policy basis of it. As you stated, "you stick to the procedure and policies", which I appreciate.
- I was checking the policy No open proxies and it states,
- “ f your IP is an open proxy, it will not be unblocked. It is more likely for an exception to be granted if you provide good reasons to think you won't abuse it; obvious cases are, for instance, users blocked by the Chinese Great Firewall and accounts with substantial past contributions. ”
- But what is the meaning of "accounts with substantial past contributions"? Say I have substantial contributions in another project but not here and I request an unblock to be able to contribute in more projects, how does it work? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 03:28, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, I know that and you imho have substantial past contributions in general, so the issue is that I suppose some parts of the policy are not updated, because both the global and the local IPBE give also a Tor exemption and they aren't two different things. So it's like you also request a tor exemption and should follow also that part, btw you probably misunderstood the "valid reason" part, since it doesn't need to be a full detailed reason, just to be clear. The fact that you don't want to justify the request at all is an obstacle to granting the flag, unfortunately, because it may make we think of an unmotivated request. Our practice, just to explain, is actually to ask to deactivate the open proxy or to explain why it's not possible, so, if we are told that it cannot be done for reason X, we start to evaluate granting the flag (and tbh I never saw someone who started complaining that any good reason was needed). Imho, I repeat, it's better to request the flag via UTRS, both for your privacy and to respect the procedure. FTR I'm not implicitly rejecting your request, I just put it on hold waiting for further information, and I honestly hope it will be closed with the granting of the flag (but it doesn't depend solely on me). Superpes15 (talk) 11:00, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Superpes15 I have translator training and I understand that people's minds work differently. You had expectations of me, I had expectations of you, and I guess neither of us fulfilled the expectations of the other.
- You expected me to provide a valid reason without complaint in order to weigh whether an unblock was warranted. I expected from you to be proactive and see that I already had an ipblock exempt, that I am a veteran editor and grant the request without needless bureaucracy.
- I nevertheless appreciate at least the efforts in providing me further information, I will follow up with the fora you suggested. I suggest you be more proactive in the future and not so bureaucratic.
- Sincerely, Thinker78 (talk) 00:20, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't feel to be bureaucratic at all, we are talking about a sensitive global permission and, honestly, the fact that you've a local permission is not a valid reason for us. You could have told me anything and maybe it would have been enough motivation for me, if you haven't had the flag yet it's not up to me, sorry! And I also consulted briefly with other stewards FYI. I always try to improve and make mistakes like everyone else, and I will continue to do so, so your feedback is very important to me. I'll think about it, but I think I handled the request in the best interest of the community, also to avoid creating bad precedents, and I could have easily left the discussion at any point, but I purposely wanted to continue and tried to assist you to the best of my ability. Thanks again! Superpes15 (talk) 00:47, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
