Amgine's questions

[edit]
  • How would audio files be used in Wikipedia articles?
    • en.WP effectively does not allow original documents to be directly referenced. w:WP:NOR
  • What do you mean by 'portable'?1
  • What do you mean by 'proprietary'?2
    • Mp3 is a proprietary, licensed sound codec which is not supported by Commons.3
  • Supportive content model ("Record audio related to this article...") could be implemented inside the current Wikipedia mobile app or the Wiktionary mobile app, but would not generally allow initiating audio content or support multiple-article linking. A stand-alone recording app could support the latter two but may have difficulties with the former, however once created could be initiated from the other apps (at least on Android.) Which model do you see as more desirable?
  • The Wikipedia app does not currently support sound file playing. Would this grant include development of such a feature for that application?

I think I can answer the first part of the question (keeping in mind that I'm not involved with that particular project). en.wp is not the focus for the audio recording, it`s more for endangered languages. A fluent speaker who open up a page on a endangered language Wikipedia could by a click record him/herself talking about the subject and upload it to Commons. The reason behind that, from my point of view, is because the elders don't have the capibability to write directly on the Wikipedia and they are the only ones really knowing the languages. Then, the recordings could be add to the Wikipedia article in the endangered language or be valorize on Google's Endangered Languages Project. I guess audio recordings could be useful on en.wp to illustrates the languages' articles for example.
For the sub point, there is already some articles (especially on Wikinews) that are recorded and I don't think there is issue with "original content".
And for the mp3 part, I agree with Amgine, I think we should look at a free-license audio codec for that app.

I agree the product can do much more with the sister projects, Amqui, but the deliverable mobile app is specified to link the resulting sound file to a Wikipedia article. It might do so using a template added to the == See Also == section, so it can easily use the API to find the place to add a link to the sound file after uploading it. What I want to know is how the organizers envision the app working to link to Wikipedia articles, do they have something else in mind? - Amgine/meta wikt wnews blog wmf-blog goog news 15:52, 29 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
