Hi,
I am PatríciaR at pt:wp, and would like to request a cloak, "@wikipedia/PatriciaR". IRC nicks are PatriciaR and PatriciaR_. I asked User:Jdforrester but apparently this user has not edited anything here since November 5th, or on en:wp since September, so I don't know how often he checks his requests. Thank you! Hey Xyrael, thanks for your message. The master nick is SWMTBot and all are linked; the requested nick is wikimedia/Tangotango/bot/SWMTBot. As for a non-Tangotango cloak, I'm not sure what real problems there are with it. If anything goes wrong with the bots, people can go over to the Small Wiki Monitoring Team page on meta and find out which bots are owned by whom; the situation is the same as now, as I only have control over SWMTBot, and none of the other bots owned by other SWMT members. (Besides, the bots do not operate outside of the Small Wiki Monitoring Team channels). If it helps accountability, I can also make the SWMTBot code display the owner in the "description" field. If this is acceptable, my requested cloak is wikimedia/bot/SWMTBot. Thanks a lot! Cheers, Tangotango 02:40, 22 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
- Thank you very much Xyrael! :D I'll make sure the bots don't go on a flooding rampage around freenode, so don't worry :P Cheers, Tangotango 01:40, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Do I need to create an account to e-mail you? Hey Sean,
I got a message that my IRC cloak was denied because the "instructions hadn't been followed". I followed all the instructions provided on your form, are there some elsewhere that I missed? Only a couple things I can think of if not...
- I used a user sandbox page on Wikipedia to make the diff instead of my user talk. Still with my username, still confirms identity, certainly can't imagine such a pedantic thing would've mattered!
- Initially, when I tried to send you the memo, it was full. However, I held off sending the form, and later in the day it went through. (Or at least MemoServ said it went through!) I only sent the form after that, so you certainly should've had the memo.
I'll be happy to resubmit, if you need, but I'm rather at a loss as to what I might've done wrong. Seraphimblade 17:32, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Note to self: all above this point dealt with.

I would like to suggest that you deprecate (mark historical, mark rejected, whatever it is you do on meta) the guidelines as they are right now, and you actually get on IRC and get people who know the channel to help write a new guideline document. These guidelines aren't bad per se (there are one or two problems but nothing big), so normally they could be tweaked, except for the fact they have an air of illegitimacy that's going to be hard to get rid of, so 'on the ground' the good gets thrown out with the bad. And, seriously, if you're going to be our group contact, would it kill you to come on and say hi once in a while? Try being active in the channel for a while. Get a feel for it. --Random832 03:20, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am new to IRC and am having trouble with the directions for setting up a cloak (for my Wikipedia ID:"The Fat Man Who Never Came Back") My first problem is that I don't understand how to register a Nick on freenode, as described here. I'm trying to register and get a IRC cloak for using the Wikipedia IRC channels. I've registered as Pyrspirit and connected it to an email address and alternate nick, and I'm trying to complete the steps at the cloak request page. I'm currently stuck at step 5, which is checking that all steps have been completed. It gives the following message:
We couldn’t find the message sent to bot. It appears that it was not sent or was sent using a wrong nickname.
Incomplete requests will be stored for three days before being discarded, so you can return later to complete this request from this computer in that time frame.
I've tried sending the message it specified (/msg wmfgcbot !reqcloak [confirmation code] ) several times, but it doesn't seem to work. I've never used IRC before, so I'm not sure what to try next. Why isn't this working? Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 16:19, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sean, we have an issue on the Croatian IRC channel #wikipedia-hr where the founder of the channel is the steward Dungodung, and he has been managing other user rights. No one in the Croatian wiki space user or admin have the founder flag. I believe that the community that is gathered around the Croatian Wikipedia project are quite capable of managing the #wikipeida-hr and other channels associated with the project Considering the policy that is used on meta http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_Group_Contacts states that "...The contacts have a policy of staying out of channel affairs and letting individual channels run themselves unless it becomes absolutely necessary for them to intervene. This is because most channels have their own communities, and it wouldn't work to have the contacts micro-managing every single Wikimedia-related channel out there..." I agree that stewards need to step in from time to time. They have a care taking role but in service to the community. The Croatian wiki users are wishing to regulate their own affairs on the IRC channel, can this be rectified as soon as possible.
Regards,
Vodomar 07:30, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
- This message would have been useful had you written the whole history. I'm not the founder as a steward, but as a GC. I intervened because the situation at the channel is so awful that you guys cannot agree who you want to be your owner. So, as an intermediary solution, this had to happen. --FiliP ██ 09:16, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
- Ok, I will get the whole history to you within a day. But to state the the "situation at the channel is so awful" is condescending remark to the people who work and devote their time to the Croatian wikipedia. It is fine to be a caretaker, but then the channel needs to be given back to the community who are quite capable in looking after it. Vodomar 10:20, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
- Hi there Vodomar. Let's be clear: dungodung is acting as an IRC contact /not/ as a Steward here. I encourage you to talk to dungodung about how he runs the channel - perhaps you can arrange to have some other users given operator priviledges if it is necessary. If you can't resolve things then send me an e-mail, but from what I have observed myself, the channel is far from ideal and needs some form of guidance. Thanks. —Sean Whitton / 16:06, 16 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Xyrael. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Xyrael~metawiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours, Keegan Peterzell Community Liaison, Wikimedia Foundation
