Yiddish Wikipedia dispute

IRC

I am blocked from the IRC steward channel by a Stewart called Effeit Sanders, whom i have accused in my eyes very proving, of bias i would like to talk to some other stewards about his actions i feel that i am being abused by his higher power here i want my case be herd by his pears how can i do that?--זלמן לייב 19:50, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps you could try commenting at Talk:Stewards. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:19:21, 02 July 2007 (UTC)

Unblock request

Hi, as i know 100% this user have nothing with this vandal. He is an active great writer. (my page in the yiddish wiki [1]). thanks.--69.114.50.208 22:31, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I blocked that user because checkuser data confirmed that they edited from the same IP address using identical software. All other users with that IP address and software were vandal accounts; it is possible that Joel.m is a 'good hand, bad hand' account, or one that allows the user to contribute productively while vandalizing under a different name. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:42:36, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Pathos child if you would understand yiddish u would see how he is lying he is a vandal what else can i say and i promise u if you would have checked harder u would have found more names--יודל/Yidel 22:48, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
please unblock me, i have nothing with other users under this ip and soft ware. i use a network that has 20 computers hooked up to it, all with the same ip address and Microsoft "active directory". Please unblock me and my ip address ASAP, if you want please consult this with local active administrators as [yi:user:Harel|heral]] he will tell you In the middle of a night sleep that Yidel is a sock puppet a vandal and uses multiple names. All Yidel wants now is to dominate a vote that will end with in the next day or 2, see here and here please don’t let this happen. if you fell a need for more evidence on what Yidel's intensions are; please contact Heral. bythe way this user Admitted in the HE wiki that he is Yidel Think yourself Y did he not complaint against me to the locals? Y is he going with this to someone out side? in the HE wiki he was blocked out for EVER........ please unblock me. --Joel.m 05:09, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
OK now you declare you have a network of 20 IP's here you go with your lies. checkuser has found its the same software to change ip address you use. and yes we ask all local sysops about you. your name is active only 2 months and since most contribution's was to silence me. Yes i have turned to the local sysops to block u but they hastitae to get involved since they know u have 20 ips and only a normal steward can block all of them. i can give you more names that another checkuser has found to be yours. well over 20 my friend. most of your names are already blocked as the stewards point out. Thats some network of yours...--יודל 14:25, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
  1. I never declare that i have a network of 20 IP's. Instead i wrote "all with the same ip address and Microsoft "active directory". (I know it’s the same old you to turn peoples words around to get them convicted)
  2. I did not speak to you, I spoke to Pathoschild.
  3. if I need to be blocked out just because I support Runi, then you will stay the only user on wiki YI.
Now Pathoschild, if you do not want to unblock the ip at least free my account, its not fair that I should be punished for the sin of others. BTW, Yidel is using now sockpupet names in wiki YI to delete my vote on ongoing and on previous votes. --Joel.m 19:54, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Pathoschild he is a user who has declared that he writes from aq network with 20 ips please see to block all 20 ip addresses i can give you more names if u need my help.--יודל 20:21, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
again!!!, I never declare that i have a network of 20 IP's. Instead i wrote "all" with "the same" ip address and Microsoft "active directory". (I know it’s the same Yidel that turns peoples words around to get them convicted) --Joel.m 23:54, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
pathoschild please block him from meta as well. he has no place to voice his filty vandalism here.--יודל 00:33, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I've unblocked the account. Please dispute on another page, such as the Metapub. I will block the account again if there is consensus to do so or evidence of abuse. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:19:21, 02 July 2007 (UTC)

How can u unblock it when shanel has found that he opened a other name with my privacy and identity just this night [1] and shanel blocked that one as well?--יודל 10:22, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
I've re-blocked it based on the new evidence. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:30:04, 02 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi,
  • Since I was blocked I opend a new account so I can keep up my contributions and I can save my vote’s which are being deleted by this same person now trying to keep me blocked for all cost’s. On the new user page I clearly wrote that this user is the same one as joel m. and I clearly stated that I opend this account for use till my original account “joel m. will be unblocked. Was this a violation???? I don’t know why I was reblocked. Please unblock my account (if you look on the history of my new account you will find “only” edits on my user page and a complaint on a talk page about Yidel deleting my vote.
  • I opend the new account based on my family history, the firs name is of my fathers father and the second name is my mothers maiden name. Since Yidel will use any way to keep me out he will claim that I am using "his" name. (With out proof that it is his name and with out proof that i know his name) please reunblock my account joel m. if you will find any violation i will understand Y you should block it but just because of Yidal says on the name of my temporary account that it is his name??????. please unblock my account joel.m at least ontill there will be proof that I am violating any law.
joel.m --66.174.79.241 19:05, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
  • The reason you gave for reblocing me is 1. I created a sock puppet name, 2. I used his name as a user name.
1. I wrote on the new user page that its me so You cannot consider this as a sock puppet spicily after the wiki rules are that a sock puppet is some one that uses diff name in order to mislead others, which is not the case here. (this was the first edit I made with that user), 2. other users trying to help me with this told me that before I was a user here he had disputes with other users and got them blocked out for the reson of using his name, so I looked back and fond…. Imagine what…….. please see the list of blocked users in YI wiki like shmaltz specifically in November you will be amazed to find that they wore blocked for using the name “Hershel" krous and he claimed that its his name, isn’t it amazing that when I use the name of “Yidel” krous he jumps up again and claims the it is hi name??????????? Please don’t consider me using this name for having my account joel.m blocked. Again I don’t think that the name Ana bush should be abounded because of President Bush carries this family name.
FYI here are some axamples of what he is, [2] on this page please see the signature. [3] He deleted the signature and replased it.
[4] Again the same thing on a other page on a different time.
I did not have time for more and I believe you don’t need more. please dont consider his words. --70.208.236.134 05:57, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
A name can always be proven who's it is there is the telephone company directory and there is ID cards from the government like drivers license and more. So there is no point in arguing here. If the stewards want i can provide everything for proving a vicious vandal who has degenerated himself to destruction of our wiki by exposing personal information and identity of other users. Thank you Pathoschild and shanel for doing your responsibility to block him out.--יודל 14:01, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
its about time and i did the good job i found out how that person was its proven by now that i managed to stop him, please free me. joel.m --66.174.79.232 04:56, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Checkuser request

We at wiki YI suffer recently more then ever from a sockpupet. please run a check user on "ALL" new accounts for the last month, You will be amazed to find that 99% of them are one and the same person, and block him. It will be a major positive contribution from your side for YI wiki to get this done. --Joel.m 20:02, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

They are all from the above user who half of the names were blocked already. Thank G-D--יודל 20:20, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

My revert

Thank you, Pathos, for your interest. However I disagree to recommend your summary in that way. I reverted it [5]. I would note it is my personal opinion, but if you think we Eleccom should do so, please bring it up in an official manner, before reverting my edit. Thanks. --Aphaia 15:01, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Okay. —{admin} Pathoschild 16:26:02, 01 July 2007 (UTC)

page block

Dear steward when u have some time please block this page [6], it is a blocked user becouse of privacy identety and some user keeps on editing it it should apear on the recent changes page in order to intimidat its real name user. remember don't erase it so the perpetrator should not come back tomorrow with his changing ip address and recreate it. let it be there locked and taken. thanks--יודל 14:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Jump page.

Is there any particular reason that you made your drastic change to the voting jump page? I've gotten four confused emails since your change by people who can't figure out how to vote. Most users of other projects are not fully aware of the fact that users accounts are split between projects. I believe the version produced by the election com. was much more clear. Perhaps they could be combined, with the full list at the bottom? --Gmaxwell 19:47, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

The main differences from the the previous version is merging the English and non-English pages, and expanding the brief list to a comprehensive table. Are you referring to either of these changes, or to the changed wording? —{admin} Pathoschild 20:03:24, 04 July 2007 (UTC)
I've had six emails now from people who are completely lost on the page, I'm just going to revert your changes. If you can't see why the page is confusing then you have no business editing it. Sorry to be rude but after my failed attempt to discuss this with you on IRC I am rather short on patience. --Gmaxwell 01:50, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Which attempt? You sniped at the election committee on IRC, then pointed me to my talk page. I asked which particular change among many you were referring to, and you state that you're reverting me because of your 'failed attempt to discuss'.
I see that you simply copied the short list over the table with an identical header. While presumably helpful to the English Wikipedians you contacted, most other Wikimedians may well be more confused now because their wiki is not even on the list. I don't think you've given much thought to this beyond the English Wikipedia. —{admin} Pathoschild 03:00:19, 05 July 2007 (UTC)

Query regarding arbitration process

Hello, I need an advice. I am an administrator at the Lithuanian Wikipedia. We had a person in our project whose actions were in the end considered as vandalism or trollying. He finally got blocked for an extended period of time. Afterwards he started kind of his own project in Lithuanian Wikibooks, which is meant to "reveal the intolerable behaviour and wrongdoing of the wikipedia adminstrators" (paraphrased). Following this, an argument between myself and that person evolved (in wikibooks) which really can't be put into discussion category, as I would not say a discussion is possible with that person at all, not the least he started that argument. That person takes any statements I write, twists them around and then puts everything in the way as if it is me, not him, a vandal. Finally he wrote a number of accusations towwards me, and I admit it's starting to become unnerving, even if I know I am right in this argument. Nobody so far has interfered in this 'discussion' and the fact that with regards to this person, almost every regular user of wikipedia can't be considered neutral, I do not know if inviting a third person would prove effective and if I should. This leaves me in a quite helpless position. The next stage would be requesting arbitration, should I do that? If you could please answer here or on my talk page at Lithuanian Wikipedia [7], I would be grateful. Thank you very much. Mea 16:36, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Archiving the CU request page

Some discussion split into "Your list of wikis without an account" below.

Hi.. thanks for the archiving but I think maybe it might be a good thing to leave completed requests around for more than 4 hours before they're archived. Commons uses a week, which gives admins plenty of time to digest the results... often there are blocks or followups needed. Also, how did you generate that list of wikis you don't have userids on yet? Is it a thing that could be run for any ID? I'd fancy a list like that myself... Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 23:49, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Would archiving something only 12 hours old seem a little speedy compared to the rate that CU checks generally are getting done? --Herby talk thyme 07:28, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I didn't look at the dates when I archived the page; I'll leave them around longer next time. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:57:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Your list of wikis without an account

I generated the list of wikis where I don't yet have an account by:
  1. generating a list of existing wikis (wiki array) from Special:SiteMatrix with regex;
  2. generating a list of wikis where I have an account (username array) using a toolserver script (the project list is down at the moment, so I can't find the exact tool I used);
  3. subtracting the username array from the wiki array.
This could easily be done automatically, if it would be useful. I'll put together a script when the toolserver project list is back up. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:57:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Interiot has a tool on the toolserver to report what wikis have a given id : results for your ID. I'm guessing it runs against the SiteMatrix you refer to (or the underlying datasource that SiteMatrix feeds from?) in order to generate checks? However I think there might be a problem with some input to it somewhere as it's not reporting all of mine right now. What I think niftiest about your list is that you wired into the URLs the parameters of the various pages so a single click does more than just take you to the page, it fills out some of the info (preferences, for example, could be extended quite a bit from the few that you wired in already in url parameters)... the html source for the preferences page is very interesting reading! ++Lar: t/c 22:19, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I want a list too. And a pony. Especially the pony. :(--Shanel 03:25, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Required tool

I created this tool for you, but I'm out of ponies! In case you have an idea how to optimize it, just leave a not on my talk page. Huji 17:16, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Great. An "advanced options" section (where the user can fill in their email address and preferred language) would make it possible to link to pre-filled registration forms, as I do in my list. Maybe also a checkbox to only list wikis without an account? Those features would make your tool wonderful. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 18:03:23, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for pasting all this to my talk page, but I usually follow the others' user pages when I post in the middle of their discussion with another person. I removed your post from my talk page for the same reason.
Anyways, I'm going to implement your ideas to the code; just check it out in a few hours. Huji 14:06, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Pathoschild, I think it meets all your requirements now! Huji 16:46, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Wow, nifty toy. It reports my account/nonaccount status correctly as far as spot checking review showed. But when I tried the register link, (for dewikisource where I do not have an account) it took me to a page about dewikisource's latest db dump status instead of to the registration page I expected... was that expected behaviour? Thanks. This was with userid and email filled in. ++Lar: t/c 17:00, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Kudos for that one - I got to the right page on one I tried so it must just be that Lar can't use it! Do tell Shanel that the pony is in the post --Herby talk thyme 17:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Lar, what you said made me find and fix an irrelevant bug, so thank you! Anyways, I fixed the problem you had (which was a problem with all wikisource ones). Check it out and report any other bugs. Huji 18:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Your tool is wonderful. Some more suggestions:
  • An extra box with a label like "preferred language code", with "en" filled in as default and example, would be nice. That language code could be added verbatim to the URL's "&uselang=" parameter, to display the register form in the user's preferred language.
  • advisorywiki should be advisory.wikimedia, not advisory.wikipedia.
  • "&wpPassword=&wpRetype=" can be removed from the register links; they were for the passwords, but it's no longer possible to fill in the passwords from the URL.
  • The linked WebSVN is empty.
Thanks. :D —{admin} Pathoschild 18:26:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Well I think I should thank you because you are giving the ideas, and all I do is coding :) Anyways, I will try to setup the langcode thing (but I first need to get a list of available ones from inside the wiki code). I fixed the other two issues. I haven't started using my SVN yet, but I think I will soon (probably as soon as I feel sure I can work with it) Huji 19:02, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Regarding SVN, maybe you could have a "view source" mode on the page itself? I think this is easier in the long run, since the source code is generated automatically from the latest version, and you can easily hide the source code of sensitive files (like database login code). For example, click the "Source code" tab at the top of pathos.ca/tools/Sort. That page uses the custom function makeSource('../globals/globals.php,index.php'), which contains the following code. (Sorry for the messy code; I never got around to cleaning it up.)

/* source code */
function makeSource($files='0') {
    $viewsource = $_GET['source'];

    if($viewsource) {
    // begin output
    ?>
    <h2>Source code</h2>
    <div class="section">
        <!-- hide source button -->
        <form action="index.php">
            <input type="submit" value="Hide source code" />
        </form>
    <?php
        // parse and output
        if($files != '0') {

            // break into individual files
            $files = explode(',', $files);

            // begin output
            ?>
                <!-- table of contents -->
                <div style="width:auto; border:1px solid #CCC; padding:0.5em; font-size:0.9em;" id="tableofcontents">
                    <b>Table of contents</b>
                    <ol>
            <?php
            for($i=0; $i<count($files); $i++) {
                $topicid[$i] = preg_replace('/[^a-z0-9]/i','',$files[$i]);

                echo '<li><a href="#' . $topicid[$i] . '" title="section for ' . $files[$i] . '">' . $files[$i] . '</a></li>';
                }
            ?>
                    </ol>
                </div>

            <?php
            // source code sections
            for($i=0; $i<count($files); $i++) {
                echo '<h3 id="' . $topicid[$i] . '">' . $files[$i] . '</h3><span style="font-size:0.9em; margin:0 0 0.5em 0.5em;"><a href="#tableofcontents" title="table of contents">view table of contents</a></span><div class="source">';
                highlight_file($files[$i]);
                echo '</div>';
            }
        }
        // if no file specified
        else {
            echo '<p>The source code for the selected script is not available. Please refer to the script page for a possible explanation; it may be available in download form, or disabled for security reasons. If you believe that the source code should be viewable online, please <a href="http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/user_talk:Pathoschild" title="webmaster\'s talk page">contact me</a>.';
        }
    echo "</div>";
    }
}

Anyway, your tool is great. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 20:04:31, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for sharing the idea, but I really am thinking of using the SVN indeed. I'm pushing others to do so as well. Leakage of sensitive data can be avoided if placed in a directory above the SVN root (much like what I wrote on Toolserver/For users/Tutorial) and the SVN idea is better in practice, since others can also benefit from learning the changes made to the code to support a new feature. All in all, I'm going to push myself towrads using the SVN Huji 05:52, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Regarding subst-check

Hi! I'm trying to learn the method you describe here in my template. It works fine, but when I try to substitute it, like this:

{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>NAMESPACE}}||{{error:not substituted|AFD}}<div style="display:none;">}}

...template code...

{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|{{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>NAMESPACE}}||</div>}}

it doesn't work. Why's that? --MrStalker talk 08:09, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

If I recall correctly, this is related to a known bug with substituting ParserFunctions. I'm not aware of any way to substitute the check without breaking it. Generally speaking, the ParserFunction would work if everything was substituted— but that doesn't apply in this case, where we're deliberately comparing a substituted and unsubstituted value. —{admin} Pathoschild 02:55:29, 09 July 2007 (UTC)
Okey, got it. Thanks. --MrStalker talk 08:18, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild. There are about 688 essays at :Category:Wikipedia essays and I feel that great essays are being buried by the volume. WP:NOP

Hey, I noticed your revert of my changing the tag on WP:NOP and I figured I should come here to talk about it. I changed the tag to "proposed" from "policy" because the proposed tag reflects the situation on the talk page and in the community. It is: "in development, under discussion, [and] in the process of gathering consensus for adoption." It would be wrong to characterize it as having "Wide acceptance among editors and [being] considered a standard that all users should follow." If there were an "ex-policy" or "policy under review" template that was more clear, I'd add it instead, but right now "proposal" is the best description for it and "Policy with sections disputed" doesn't go far enough. Hope to hear from you soon, -- The_socialist talk? 04:36, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Redirect of :Belarusian Wikipedia

leftHello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on :Belarusian Wikipedia, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because :Belarusian Wikipedia is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting :Belarusian Wikipedia, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Standardise template: Welcome Stranger

Hi - you added {{standardise}} to Welcome Stranger when removing the obsolete Category:New texts with this edit. Hello. I didn't check each work as I added the template, since I was simply replacing the older misnamed 'new page' category. I've just standardised that particular page. —[admin] Pathoschild 03:03, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Sitenotice

If you wish to customise the sitenotice, instead of using the default please feel free to change it. My edit yesterday was due to the version about matching funds from Virgin Unite sitll being displayed after the time period was over. I dislike messing with code I can't understand (especailly in such a promenant place), so I just copied in pasted from the "offcial" code at wikimediafoundation.org. I didn't mean it to insist on the default wording; just thought accuracy was more important than the customization at the moment. I actually assumed you would re-customize it whenever you came back online.--BirgitteSB 03:35, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Hey BirgitteSB. Thanks for the explanation. You're right that accuracy is more important than the customization; I just assumed you preferred the default version. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 03:39, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I prefer the custom wording, but I am afraid to break code that is displayed on every single page of the site :) --BirgitteSB 04:03, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
I've reverted to the customized version without the matching donor note. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:20, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Isn't there some sort of code that is incrementaly raised with each change for the dismissal option? I thought reverting to an earlier version would cause problems with that. --BirgitteSB 15:09, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Nope. My understanding is that dismissing the sitenotice will hide all versions until the sitenotice id is incremented. We haven't incremented it on Wikisource yet, so dismissing it should be permanent. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:46, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Mediawiki:Sitenotice

Hi. You blanked this page but left a space in it (&nbsp;). I think this stops the global notice showing -- was this intentional? Thanks, Sam Korn 19:51, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello Sam Korn. Yes, hiding the global site notice was intentional. The site notice is best used rarely, and although thanking donors again is nice, it's not important enough for a global announcement. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 19:57, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Tom Jones

Thanks for helping me standardize the format for the contents page. This is my first attempt to add a major chunk of literature on Wikisource. I decided to make the attempt when I found out that this April marks the 200th birthday of Henry Fielding, considered one of the first English novelists, but Wikisource has none of his works yet!

Incidentally, I modelled the contents page for Tom Jones after the one for Oliver Twist, so that one needs to be cleaned up too. --EncycloPetey 01:01, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. The standards are described by the Style guide; I'll standardize Oliver Twist later. Thanks for the great work so far. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 01:03, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Journey into the Interior of the Earth

Hi, I noticed that you fixed the errors in the text of the chapters I uploaded. I had copied them from an internet source, and didn't have the time to fix them... I've also noticed you gon back and uploaded several more chapters. I was wondering, if you would like me to help with uploads (say, starting from the end moving backwards), considering the chapters will have minor errors in them, or should I just leave you to the rest of it? Fairly new here to Wikisource, but I'm an experienced editor of the English Wikipedia (with the same username).--Vox Rationis 03:06, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello Vox Rationis. I've prepared the entire text with regex, so I just need to paste it into pages and look it over. Category:Author pages without defaultsort

Hmm, I was wandering thru and stumbled across the redlink Author pages without defaultsort and almost created it before I checked the deletion log. That cat is still part of {{Author}}, but I didn't know if changes were coming which would modify that template. — MrDolomite | Talk 11:43, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, the author template will be overhauled soon; see "Overhaul author template" (Scriptorium, March 2007). That category was used while we were phasing in a new parameter, and will be removed when the overhaul is implemented. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:13:32, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Edit request

Could you please add this code:

div.topicon {
  position:absolute;
  z-index:100;
  top:10px;
  display: block !important;
}

to MediaWiki:Monobook.css so that the Featured template can be reduced in size. Cheers. --MZMcBride 20:06, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello MzMcBride. The styles for the template are defined by #cornerbox; I'm not sure where .topicon is used, if anywhere. Could you clarify what this is useful for? —{admin} Pathoschild 20:27:56, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for the ambiguity. I wanted to make the Featured template on Wikisource more like the template used on English Wikipedia. It uses the topicon code so I was hoping to just add simplified code that doesn't include a border to make the icon look neater. Cheers. --MZMcBride 00:57, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Changes to the appearance of standard templates should be discussed first, although you're free to change the styles in your personal stylesheet. —{admin} Pathoschild 01:00:36, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Apologies

From Category talk:Non-author author pages:

Smee 21:35, 11 April 2007 (UTC).

  • I must admit, in my opinion it seems a bit odd for this 6 Keeps, some of which voiced as "Keep and make more" and 3 Deletes, four if you count the nominator, as "no consensus". Seems like the majority said Keep, leaning towards Keep all and make more.
  • It also seems odd that the discussion was closed by an involved editor that had commented as "delete". This seems a bit unfair to the process.

Smee 21:39, 11 April 2007 (UTC).

60% support is not consensus, particularly where most users who voted in favour are not active in the Wikisource community; Wikisource is not a parliamentary democracy where the opinion of a small majority overrule consensus. Your edits to the category page seem to be arguments in favour of creating more despite a lack of consensus, as opposed to a neutral tracking category description. The involvement of the closing administrator is not relevant, considering that they (fairly) closed against their own opinion. If you disagree with the outcome, please start a new discussion; do not attack administrators or attempt to insert bias into category descriptions.
Furthermore, I don't see why you're so concerned about the category. This category simply tracks them for later discussion, it does not imply that they should be kept or deleted. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:48:41, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
My apologies if it seemed as if I was "attacking" anyone. I was simply trying to report the facts. Please forgive me if this was misconstrued. Smee 22:31, 11 April 2007 (UTC).
Please note that I had left a comment a week prior to closing asking for a more detailed explanation of how people would like handle such pages with an example of an organization with a long history. After a week of no responses on a 2-month old nomination I closed it as no consensus. When closing I requested that anyone unhappy with my closing feel free to simply reopen the discussion. Every admin I recognized as someone who closes deletion discussions had commented in the discussion, as well as every editor who regularly comments on deletion discussions. If you were unhappy with my actions, I would have really appreciated it if you discussed it with me personally (or else simply reverted them as I suggested). I just happened to stumble on this conversation by accident today and was not previously aware of it. Although I have strong opinions on many issues, I have no interest in seeing them put into practice without the community being fully behind them. I would hope everyone here feels the same way.
No consensus is a common close for discussions on Wikisource. Historically we have not forced decisions on issues people cannot agree on. In the past issues fron how to codify acceptable languages to naming conventions for authors have been closed as no consensus. In these past cases people continue to make new contributions as they see fit without pressing the issue by altering existing content or starting additional projects for what they wished everyone had agreed on. Everyone simply acts with mutual respect keeping in mind that the issue is unsettled. Hopefully future new information or new perspectives on these issues will create the consensus which is currently lacking. My personal attitude is that there is plenty of work to be done here where there is consensus on how to handle it. However if you wish to press forward and try and build a consensus on this issue, I suggest you develop your ideal author page for what you want to see adopted and invite discussion on the Scriptorium. I don't think further discussion of either the general theory nor the existing pages which were nominated for deletion will produce any movement on the issue (which is ultimately why I closed the thread).--BirgitteSB 14:28, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for this thoughtful explanation, and again, I apologize if any offense was taken by anyone. Please understand that none was meant. Smee 17:47, 12 April 2007 (UTC).

My apologies if it seemed as if I was "attacking" anyone. I was simply trying to report the facts. Please forgive me if this was misconstrued. Smee 22:31, 11 April 2007 (UTC).

Thank you for your kind note. I am not offended, but simply wish for you to better understand my thinking and expectations.--BirgitteSB 18:36, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

OTRS and e-mail ticket

Pathoschild,

According to this, it seems that the author Martin Gilbert has e-mailed Permissions regarding placing his book on the Holocaust into the public domain. Since you have OTRS access, could you confirm the ticket and make sure everything's in order and that it is okay to add the work to WS? Thanks!—Zhaladshar (Talk) 21:33, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello. The copyright release was sent from a free email address, so we can't accept it (

OTRS ticket#2007041510015614). I've asked them to confirm from a verifiable source, like an address associated with the official website, but I would not hold my breath— the book in question is still published commercially. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:20:41, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

U. G. Krishnamurti

Thank you for fixing the page of U. G. Krishnamurti on wikisource. I noticed that you have deleted the text "the natural state" with the tagline "unreleased". I would like to know what does this mean. I am thinking that perhaps the fact that the name Peter Maverick appears on the cover is the reason for this. If this is so, I believe I should tell you that all of the words of this book are from the author U.G. and that Peter Maverick merely made a selection, for which appears in the cover of the book written "compiled by Peter Maverick". This book is described as an anthology of U.G. words. I don't know if any of this has any effect on copyrights violation or if this is the issue to begin with. I believe you will find sources for all this information by following the link to amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Natural-State-Words-U-G-Krishnamurti/dp/8187967773/ref=sr_1_1/102-0984575-6632900?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176894655&sr=8-1

Hello anonymous. I deleted the text because it was not explicitly released into the public domain, as the others were. About a year ago you suggested using a Javascript tool to hide information you dislike from featured article talk pages. Please start using this instead of removing information from the talk page. Also I think it would be acceptable to archive this information. I cannot support removing in a way where it is only accessible through the history.--BirgitteSB 19:45, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Nirvana

What happened with Nirvana? Did I screw it up when I was making the disambiguation page somehow? DanMS 05:08, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello. When you converted 'Nirvana' to a disambiguation page, you copied and pasted the old content to a new page at 'Nirvana (Smith)'. Doing it this way loses the page's edit history, which is required by Wikisource's license. At the top of the page, there's a tab with the text "move"; this allows you to easily rename a page with its full edit history. Then you just need to edit the old page name to make the disambiguation page. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 05:13:26, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the advice. Sorry I messed it up. DanMS 05:16, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

thanks for the welcome

Hello Kyoko, and welcome to Wikisource. I noticed your edit summary in our recent changes channel, but your edits are looking very good already. I've tweaked My Love Is Like to Ice a bit, particularly changing it to the special <poem> formatting (which simplifies line breaks and indenting), and adding a license template and category. Help:Categorization is useful if you would like to fully categorize your work, but this is something that is often done later. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or post on the community discussion page. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 01:28:56, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild, thanks for the welcome. Even though I have quite a bit of Wikipedia experience, things seem to work a bit differently here, and I still need to figure out things like the changes in syntax. For example, on Wikipedia, if I typed [[s:de:John Keats|de:John Keats]] I would create a link to the German language article on John Keats. How do I make the same sort of link to a Wikipedia site from here? Figuring out the normal way of adding texts will also take some time, but I'm in no rush, and I'm glad to help! Thanks again, Kyoko 04:26, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
[[s:de:John Keats|de:John Keats]] will add an interlanguage link to the Deutsch Wikisource. To link to a Wikipedia article in the text, use [[s:w:John Keats|w:John Keats]] (or [[s:w:de:John Keats|w:de:John Keats]] for the Deutsch Wikipedia). The syntax is the same, but from a different point of origin. This is described in more depth at m:Help:Interwiki linking, or feel free to ask me if you have any questions. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:36:28, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Good thing I watchlisted your page, thanks for the tips! Kyoko 04:52, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 04:59:59, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Why was the NASA logo removed from the Mir hardware heritage, it is well within fair use on that document, the document should not be altered form the orginial and other nasa docs on wikisource have the logo on them.Chris 04:30, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry that your work was disrupted, but any other copyrighted logos will need to be removed as well. Please see the Copyright policy, which states:

Category needed?

I just added Author:Guy Wetmore Carryl and I am going to contribute his poems. He wrote mostly humorous poetry, and I wanted to put him under a category of humorists in Category:Authors by genre, but I did not see such a category. Is there such a category somewhere else, or should we create one? I am relatively inexperienced in Wikisource, so I don't know the category system here. DanMS 00:28, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

I've added Category:Humour authors. Welcome to Wikisource. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 00:44:50, 02 June 2007 (UTC)

Question on top pages

I noticed that you added the dates to the contents page listings on Guy Wetmore Carryl. Would it be useful, or would it be contrary to established style, to add a very short description, such as:
Grimm Tales Made Gay (1902) (Parodies of Grimm's Fairy Tales)
DanMS 23:13, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Established style is to place that sort of information in the {{header}} notes on the cover page, but not on the author page. The author page is primarily an index of works, so only information useful for finding a particular edition is listed. For some written guidelines, see Wikisource:Style guide. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 00:24:24, 03 June 2007 (UTC)

Pages moved and to be moved

I have moved all of the sub-pages of Fables for the Frivolous and Grimm Tales Made Gay to their own top-level pages and corrected the headers and links. There was one page that I could not move, which was Fables for the Frivolous/The Patrician Peacocks and the Overweening Jay. I could not move this because I had made an additional edit to the redirect page The Patrician Peacocks and the Overweening Jay. Would you mind moving Fables for the Frivolous/The Patrician Peacocks and the Overweening Jay to The Patrician Peacocks and the Overweening Jay? I made all the redirects into soft redirects per the request on the move results pages. I imagine you could delete all of the soft redirects for sub-pages of Grimm Tales Made Gay and Fables for the Frivolous. The redirect pages show that they are all in a category Soft redirects/June 2007, which, however, shows as a red link, so it apparently has not been created yet. Thanks for all your help. ●DanMSTalk 06:56, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

{{PD-NASA}} redundant?

Hello. {{PD-NASA}} seems to be redundant with {{PD-USGov}}, since NASA releases copyright as an official agency of the United States federal government. The exceptions where NASA retains copyright are the same as apply to USGov copyright— works written for hire or copyright transferred to NASA, for example. Would you object to replacing the template with {{PD-USGov}}, or is there something I didn't think of? —{admin} Pathoschild 17:43:46, 03 June 2007 (UTC)

All other wikis have PD-NASA tags for NASA works, It just keeps thing more orginized and NASA does have certain areas that are not PD that are listed on the NASA link and JPL link on the templateChris 18:11, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
It seems NASA copyright is regulated by the Federal Acquisition Regulations, not section 403m of title 50 of the US Code; my mistake. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:27:21, 03 June 2007 (UTC)

Author didn't include entire work

Hi! I have been working on uploading all of John Keats' poetry, and I stumbled across Asleep! O Sleep a Little While, White Pearl!, where I noticed that it's not a complete work. It is actually the sixth part of Extracts from an Opera by Keats. I wanted to include that part and the other five parts into one single poem under the title Extracts from an Opera without forming duplications. Help? Justindeal 22:59, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

I would suggest moving Asleep! O Sleep a Little While, White Pearl! to Extracts from an Opera; this will redirect the previous title to the new one and keep the old history. Then you can expand the text to include the missing parts, and update the {{header}} template. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:14:28, 03 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank you! I was also wondering why my signature is showing up in red??? I'm using four squiggles (appropriate name?) like it says.Justindeal 01:01, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
A red link means that the target page doesn't exist yet. You can create your user page by clicking the link in your signature, writing something about yourself, and clicking save. If you don't have anything to write on it, you could also place the following code to automatically redirect users to your talk page:
#REDIRECT [[s:User talk:Justindeal|User talk:Justindeal]]
Technically, the '~' symbol is called a tilde, but they're also commonly called squiggles. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 01:07:32, 05 June 2007 (UTC)
Thank you once again, my kind friend. Justindeal 01:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I found some images from a scanned and digitized copy of Fables for the Frivolous in the files of Michigan State University here. Do you think we could save the images to Commons and them illustrate the stories with these images? Do we illustrate stories with images on Wikisource? Would there be a copyright issue here? The book is well out of copyright, but what about the scanned images? ●DanMSTalk 04:51, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

The images are definitely free of copyright in the United States, but I'm not sure about other countries. They were published before 1923 ({{PD-1923}}), and it's possible that they were never copyrighted at all since illustrations might not have been eligible for copyright before the Copyright Acts of 1909 or 1976. They're acceptable on Wikisource, and we definitely welcome illustrations in Wikisource texts. If you need help adding the copyright templates to the images on Commons and text here, I'll help.
(According to the title page, this edition was published in 1900 and illustrated by Peter Newell. The copyright page states that the copyright remains that of the 1898 edition, written by the author who died more than 100 years ago (in 1904). Thus, the text is in the public domain worldwide ({{PD-old}}). I presume that the title page refers to Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell, an illustrator who died 83 years ago (in 1924). Thus, if nothing else, the images are in the public domain in the United States ({{PD-1923}}).) —{admin} Pathoschild 22:12:07, 05 June 2007 (UTC)
I uploaded the images to Commons and put them all in commons:Category:Fables for the Frivolous, which I created for this purpose. I put template {{PD-1923}} on the images. (I am also DanMS on Commons.) I have added the images to the appropriate articles in Fables for the Frivolous. ●DanMSTalk 04:37, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello. You seem to be breaking or removing interwiki links in your recent edits to author pages (see examples of breaking and removal). Please review the diffs in your relevant contributions thus far and fix those you've incorrectly changed. Unfortunately, I don't have the time at the moment to help, but feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Thanks for your work updating the {{author}} template. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:31:35, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Then I am confused I am only following the outline of the new author template that quite a few pages lack. It wants the first and last name spilit it seems and the birth and death years spilit as well. - Wabbit98
Yes, and you have done that perfectly; but you also changed or removed the "commons_link" parameter. For example, in the example diff above, you changed "commons_link = George Eliot" to "commons_link = Eliot, George" (commons:George Eliot exists, but commons:Eliot, George doesn't).
An easy solution would be for me to restore an older version of each page and fix it again (I use a personal script to do most of the work). Have you made any other changes to author pages while you were converting {{author}}? If you'd like, I can install the script for you to use as well, which should make it much quicker and easier. It might also help with other repetitive tasks, if you are able to write new tools with it. —{admin} Pathoschild 10:51:51, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
The most I have done is maybe add the year a Pope was pope from, or clean up the bottom a little since it automatically puts it into the birth and death year Categories, I have remove those from the the list of Categories and added some PD-old when it was needed. Could you do the script thing for me if it is not to much trouble. That would make things go quicker and I will fix up the pages I have done already. Thanks for the help. Wabbit98 9:50pm PST 13 June 2007
(You can sign and date your comments automatically by typing "~~~~".)
I've added the script; a "templates" menu should appear on your left sidebar next time you refresh your browser. Please remember that the script is an experimental aid; although it generally works perfectly, there are occasional glitches with dates. As long as you check what changed before saving, you shouldn't have any problems. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:35:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

If you have time can you check out the Benjamin Harrison page and see if I did it correctly. Thanks, I want to get this right eventually. Wabbit98 10:30pm PST 14 June 2007

Your changes are still affecting the commons_link parameter. It looks like you're simply removing "|defaultsort =" but not the value. I've fixed that page with the script after restoring the previous version. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:38:58, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Recent vandalism on this wiki

Hi, I participated in in elimination of Kazoo the Magnificent (talkcontribs)'s great deeds here, after I desysopped muyself I noticed a message from Alison on my en.wp talk page proposing to protect some heavily-used templates on this wiki, such as {{process header}}. Since you're a regular syso here, I'm redirecting her request to you. MaxSem 10:51, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for cleaning up while we were away. The most heavily used templates, like {{header}} or {{author}}, are already fully protected. Less heavily used templates are typically semi-protected, as a measure against vandalism that doesn't discourage improvements by established users. I've semi-protected {{process header}}; {{click}} is only used on ten pages, and was superceded by the ImageMap Extension anyway (I'll orphan and delete it later). —{admin} Pathoschild 11:07:15, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

thanks

Thank you for correcting my formatting. Wikisource is a little confusing at first, moreso than I found Wikipedia for some reason. Swatjester 02:27, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

We strive to make Wikisource a simple project to edit; the templates are standardized and the documentation is limited to one style guide page and some well-organized help pages. Of course, a new user is much better positioned to see complexity than an experienced local user; any feedback or suggestions would be very welcome. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:59:16, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Division of documents

I have added a new article The Captives of the Amistad. This article ran to about 22 pages on paper, so I more-or-less arbitrarily divided it into eight sections when creating the pages here. The source document had no natural divisions such as chapters or sections, and I was unsure what to do about it, so I did it this way with the sections. I noted the division of the document on the contents page. If you have the time and inclination to take a look at it, perhaps you might suggest a better way (if any) to do this. ●DanMSTalk 21:32, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

PD-1923

Hello,

On the Proposed deletions, you wrote Template:PD-1923 only applies to works published in the United States. I think this is false. On [9], it is clear that works published outside USA "in compliance with US formalities" is in the public domain. Regards, Yann 22:38, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. {{PD-1923}} still doesn't apply, since compliance with US formalities is not a requirement for pre-1923 works published in the US. We'll need to create a new template, but I'd prefer to complete Wikisource:Licensing form first. I've added this to the page:

2. Published outside the United States and never published therein...

1. ...(generally)...
2. ...1 July 1909–1922...

PACER court documents

Thanks for tidying Randy Squires et al vs. District of Columbia et al. a bit, I was in a hurry when I put it up and I mainly wanted it for reference purposes there by multiple editors. It already has one article based on the content of the documents, I'd like to see some cooperation between wikinews and wikisource on stuff like this. I'm not 100% sure on the copyrights with court-filed documents, but there is a mass of information in PACER which we'd like to dip into and not all have to pay for. --Brianmc 16:00, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

regex framework question

Pathoschild,

I was wondering if it were possible to create a script that does search and replace an indefinite number of times. For example, I want to convert HTML characters (like &ecirc; to the 'ê' character) to its display value, but since I don't know how many times such a character might show up, I don't want to keep clicking on the script to convert them. Is there a way to have the framework do it all at once without specifying a number?

Thanks.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 17:17, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, you can do it with the global regex modifier, which will go through the document and replace all matches. You only need to repeat searches for recursion (overlapping matches), such as templates in template parameters. In the example below, "/ig" makes the search case-insensitive (so it matches either &ecirc; or &ECIRC;) and global (so it replaces all matches in the document).
function unicodify() {
	regex(/&ecirc;/ig,'ê');
}

update to standardization script

Hi, Pathoschild,

Your script works wonderfully for converting {{header}} to {{header2}}. However, I noticed that there is an optional parameter in header2 called "nofooter." I was wondering if the script should automatically add that parameter when it converts header to header2. For some works, no footer is needed (or even desired) and so I would think this parameter would be something used quite often. Do you think that it should be added by the script and that header2 should automatically check whether or not nofooter even exists (similar to how it checks for the other parameters).—Zhaladshar (Talk) 22:36, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello. There is no parameter like that in {{header2}}; where did you see it used? It would probably be better to change the automated footer script to not display it on small pages. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:57:46, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
See here. GrafZahl added it in a ParserFunction when header2 was made to automatically add footers to all the pages. Either way is fine for me, though; having an explicit parameter, or specifying a minimum page size to before the footer is placed.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 01:47, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
There does not seem to be a ECMA-compatible way to obtain the document size. However, Mozilla, IE and Opera appear to support the nonstandard document.fileSize. This property contains the size of the whole generated page, including MediaWiki stuff. The problem is that the amount of extra HTML code generated might vary with different versions of MediaWiki, or even from page to page. This makes it difficult to determine a suitable threshold, especially if it is supposed to be small. Is there a better way of determining the document size? Ideally, one would like to know whether the browser displays a scroll slider or not.--GrafZahl (talk) 16:24, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Is it not possible to use MediaWiki to do that for us? It seems like we should be able to do that, but I don't know if it's at all possible. Can MediaWiki generate the page size for us and we can us it in "if" statements?—Zhaladshar (Talk) 21:47, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, the MediaWiki API can return the wikiML itself or the length of the wikiML. This length is exclusive to the wikiML— for example, it counts the characters used in template calls (like "{{header}}") but not the resulting output. This is good in most cases, as it will only count the length of the actual text, but might hide the footer on long pages in the extremely rare cases using labelled section transclusion. Depending on what limit we choose, maybe the script should automatically display the footer if " /{{\s*#lst:/" is found in the text (but I don't think this will be necessary).
Getting the length from the API requires the use of asynchronous JavaScript querying. I use asynchronous querying and the API extensively in my scripts; if you need any help, feel free to ask me. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:01:14, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the API info. There are also the not-so-rare cases of {{page}} usage, so we'd definitely need a regex search for lst or page. In any case, we should keep an extra parameter in {{header2}} to override the default.--GrafZahl (talk) 22:11, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
I don't think {{header2}} is the appropriate place for such overrides, since that template is coded for bot-parseable metadata with human-readable output. Adding non-metadata parameters makes bot parsing much more difficult, and editing more confusing for new users. Rather, I'd suggest a blank template used by scripts and bots to define options; this has the benefit of infinite extensability. For example:
  • {{bot|showfooter=no}} (do not show footer);
  • {{bot|archive=yes|lastarchive=/2007-10}} (tells a bot to archive the page, with an example info parameter);
  • {{bot|autoedit=disallowed}} (tells bots not to edit this page);
  • {{bot|autosubst=disallowed}} (tells bots not to substitute templates on this page, useful for template lists).
The {{bot}} can be arbitrarily used by any bot or script, and is invisible to readers. What do you think of using that instead? A project page could be created to standardize the syntax. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:59:46, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
I like your idea in general but I would use two different templates, one for bots, and one for JavaScript. The bot template would indeed be blank as bots access the wiki markup anyway while the JavaScript template would insert (possibly invisible) <span>-tags, so that not every JavaScript has to load the wiki markup. Of course, both could still be conceptually combined (named {{tags}} or similar) with parameter-dependent behaviour.
Finally, I believe that autoedit=disallowed, which would have to be tested by virtually every bot, should not be included in this concept. It would simply become a nuisance. If we really need to forbid bots to edit certain pages, we should ask for a special edit restriction. Alternatively, we could include it and place the necessary bot logic within the respective bot framework "under the hood".--GrafZahl (talk) 14:15, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
