removespam.js

Hi Mike, I added removespam.js to a development version of the xwiki tool. See xwiki.dev.php?report=User:COIBot/XWiki/tristramshandyweb.it for an example. I'll move it to xwiki.php itself if that's OK with you. So, what do you think? --Erwin(85) 13:37, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, that's amazing! Could you have the 'rem' links open in a new tab/window by default?  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:03, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Done. This combination should make it a lot easier to revert spam. FYI: the xwiki.dev.php link no longer works as it's now located at xwiki.php.--Erwin(85) 12:03, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
Looks very good - anyone want to tell me how it works in nice easy language :). --Herby talk thyme 12:11, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

OK, so on Special:Linksearch you get a tab that says "remove external links" - after doing a search for whatever domain, you click that and give it some settings. Normally, the default is fine (so just hit enter for each of 3 dialog boxes). Then you see the links turn green - click the articles where you want to remove the domain in a new tab/window. It will automatically open edit view, find the domain and remove it. It will then load the diff of the edit - verify it as it will make errors in certain situations (for example if you have the syntax [domain.com link text] then it will leave behind "link text" -- this is because it thinks you want the text to remain behind in cases like "Then I went to BestBuy..." so you don't end up breaking the sentence when removing the link. So that is correct sometimes, but often not; you just have to check). So make any changes you need to and hit save. If you feel like you want to, play around with the settings - but usually that's not necessary.

If it ever gives you a diff where nothing changed, then it is because the link is (probably) there, but in plaintext, which it sometimes doesn't find, so you have to do a CTRL-F search for the domain name and remove it by hand. But by and large, the script catches most stuff properly, and is certainly very useful.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:58, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Your last log entry

Not quite right :) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Got it, thanks.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 10:56, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Request

Can you block a vandal on Wikisource?? Thx, --LadyInGrey 02:55, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry: IP [1]
Wish I could, but not an admin there - grab an admin or steward as needed.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:09, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mike.lifeguard, I can't find a reason why you've deleted links to comicradioshow. German authors of comic-based articles are in fact able to decide by their own if a link should stay or not. There are reasons why it's in our whitelist de:MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. --Lyzzy 09:57, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, if there is legitimate use, feel free to revert me.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 10:37, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

I dumped the data as XML here: permanent link. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 09:37, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll be taking a look at that request later today unless someone beats me to it.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:06, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Black listed with no reason

Hello Mike, You have black listed my website in fr.wikipedia on the article "Jeu de Nim" without taking care of the discussions started on this article, and without any answers. Is it possible for you to change it, this wasn't spam, this was two differents points of view discussing.

Actually, I removed only one link from that article, and blacklisted the domain after User:COIBot/XWiki/draftydraft.com. If frwiki thinks it is worth linking to, you may request whitelisting locally at w:fr:MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist.
Due to past problems with excessive linking to this domain, I do not believe this request should be fulfilled. We de-blacklist sites when trusted, high-volume editors request the use of blacklisted links because of their value in support of our projects. If such a situation arises, I'm sure the request will be carefully considered and this domain may well be removed.
Until such time, this request is Declined.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 10:42, 16 July 2008 (UTC) (This has also been noted at Talk:Spam blacklist.)

Juste considere what I did : I've implemented a game, and thought that it could be a plus to add it on this game page on wikipedia. By adding it at more than four wikipedias a bot has noticed it. You came and you suppress this link. You suppress my link, but the others who lead to the same kind of sites. So where is your reflexion about the subject ? Why my link is less qualified than others ? Because I wanted to share it with more people than others.

Those other links didn't get there by being spammed, unless I'm mistaken. Please leave further comments at Talk:Spam blacklist, not here.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:02, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

re: Silliness

Hello Mike, thanks for acting there, it seems it was about time, the talk was not related to the vandalism report page, therefore I hid it too, but left Your warning, so they can read it still, hope that is fine for You. Some people seem to waste all their energy and lives in hating each other...

Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:21, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Talk:Vandalism reports

Sorry about this. I only meant to give as much information as possible, still hoping for some sort of solution to this problem. Could you please advise me where to go now ? - Erik Baas 20:53, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

You may discuss this on your talk page with anyone who is involved. You may use the dispute resolution process on the relevant wiki. You may not keep using Talk:Vandalism reports for this purpose. Thanks.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:03, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Congrats!

Your oversight request passed and we simply await a Steward to turn on your permissions. (Insert obligatory how-to-use-your-new-tools speech here, interspersed with borderline funny jokes and anecdotes. :D ) Good job! :) Kylu 20:09, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Congrats.... and keep the good work up!! Thanks, AP aka --Kelsington 20:16, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks; it's been turned on since then.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:07, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Obligatory irate message

Account help

Hello.

I have a problem with creating account at en. wiki. Ther is a message i get and i dont know why. Perhaps you can help me. This is the mail i send it to accounts-enwiki-l@lists.wikimedia.org yesterday, but there is no answer at the moment:

Hello! I am registered user at bs. wikipedia.org with around 1000 edits. As i try to mace an global account, i get this message:

Your IP address, 194.24.158.8, has been automatically identified as a tor exit node. Editing pages through tor is disabled for unregistered users due to abuse. In order to edit through tor, you may request an account.

But this only at en.wiki. I don´t use any tor software and my computer is clean as a computer just can be. My user account at bs. wiki and other like de. sh. hr.... is Seha. At en. is a user Seha registered but it is not me. I would like to usurp this name if possible but i need an account to make a request. If possible, let me know how to get a account. Thanks!

Seha.

As i said, I´m registered at the most suoth slavian wikis and german wiki, but at the en. wiki I can´t create an account. Yesterday i run avg, kaspersky, AdAware and troyan removing software, but there is no match at all. For an unified account it´s neccesery to get an en. account but I don´t know how. Please, if you can, help me. For a answer please use the bosnian talk page: [2]. Thank you.--Seha 06:59, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Replied.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:28, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
THX. In the mean time I´v got an en. account. --Seha 09:14, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
OK, good.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:24, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello,

Why did you remove this link (mandelbrot.ovh.org "Mandelbrot Set - Online Generator"]) from more Hungarian Wikipedia articles? I see no problem with this homepage. Anyway it is better to leave an Edit Summary when you delete a link.

Oh I see that bloody spamfilter won't allow this link... what is its problem with this site? Misibacsi 08:16, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

I removed it after the site was massively spammed. At this point, I think a request for de-listing would be unsuccessful, but you may of course request at Talk:Spam blacklist.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 00:29, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

cross-wiki spam

I red on your user page that you are "trying to get more people active across wikis", I wood be happy to help in this field, but first can you please tall me what exactly is it that you do and how do you do it. Thank you, Daniel B 16:24, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

I see you are active on hewiki - I am certainly hopeful you will join us, as I have had some issues doing work on that project. I believe this stems mainly from difficulty understanding the administrator in question. You assistance in removing links on hewiki where appropriate would be invaluable.
Most of the work on cross-wiki anti-spam involves cleaning excessive linkage on many wikis (I see you have a unified account already). On Talk:Spam blacklist, there are domains for discussion (both removal and additions), and a list of current bot reports. Most of the time, the bot reports consist of excessive linking on a few wikis which can simply be removed, and no further action taken. That is the main task, where we really need more hands doing good work. As well, offering opinions on what should be added or removed on the main talk page is useful, as the administrators who work on the blacklist are always short on time. Having extra people doing legwork makes things much smoother. Both of these would be welcome tasks for you to take on.
If you are on IRC, you may wish you join us in #wikipedia-spam-t, which is the channel for coordinating cross-wiki anti-spam efforts (not just Wikipedia!)  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:10, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I'll be happy to help with any problem on any he wikimedia site. you can always contact me on my hewiki talk page. one more thing before I join, how exactly do I read the Bot reports and know what to do with them? (sorry if it's supposed to be clear, my english is not that good). Daniel B 23:09, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
No no, you're plenty clear :)
The bot reports are designed to present the maximum amount of information in a compact and structured way. At the top, we have some templates which present links to relevant information on the domain, the IP the domain resolves to, and the user adding the links. Below that, is a list of all the additions reported on. This gives the page, user, a link to the diff and an undo link. The content of the templates are explained on the templates' pages; the information on the actual additions of the link should be straightforward.
When we see a user pushing a link on several projects, we generally want to remove their additions of that link. If they go on a spree where more than 10 projects are affected, or several domains are being pushed, or the spam is particularly egregious, we will want to blacklist the link. In that case, you may close the bot report and make a request to add the domain to the blacklist on Talk:Spam blacklist.
In the bot reports, you can make comments under the <!-- Please put comments after this remark --> HTML comment. Above that, there is a {{LinkStatus|open}} template - to close the report, change open to closed, and make a comment that you are closing the report at the bottom.
Feel free to come back for more guidance - the bot reports in particular have a very steep learning curve. Again, there are others you can ask; I am always happy to help, and you may also wish to join us in IRC to chat in real-time.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:44, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
thanks a lot, everything is clear now. unfortunately, I don't use IRC. Daniel B 04:34, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Flood flag

Two things:

  1. The flood flag proposal itself will need to be re-written some. As the creator of the alterations, you should probably be the person to do this.
  2. The straw poll should probably be on a subpage, for visibility. --Anonymous DissidentTalk 15:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Will do 1 shortly. I don't see how visibility is increased by putting it on a subpage. I will however advertise this on Meta:Babel.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:15, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Eh, I just thought a separate page for the poll away from the detailed discussion would be easier. I suppose babel will also work. --Anonymous DissidentTalk 15:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
