About mailing lists

Are the contents of private mailing-lists, hosted by WMF, readable by certain WMF employees, even if they are not subscribed to the list? Winged Blades of Godric (AWB) (talk) 14:59, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello Winged Blades of Godric (AWB)/Winged Blades of Godric: My knowledge in that area is limited but according to the page Mailman on Wikitech, Mailman comes with a master administrator password that can be used to login to the administrative interface of all Wikimedia mailing lists. I am not sure how updated the information on that page is, though; and therefore if that is still true or not. I hope that this helps. Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 17:48, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! Can you kindly lead me to someone who might have accurate info, in this regard? Background:- In the recent az-wiki RFC, quite many non-admins/normal-users claimed that the admins used FB/Whatapp group to coordinate their on-wiki activities. The non-transparent-dealings reached such proportions that cases were located wherein (claimed) mis-behaviour by someone over FB led to an on-wiki block. The admins (apparently) seek to rectify it by opening an admin-only private mailing list. To be frank, I don't see how a private admin-only-maling-list is any different from an equally private admin-only-Whatsapp-group, except as to potential WMF oversight. Winged Blades of Godric (AWB) (talk) 19:14, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
There would be no difference between a private mailing list and a private FB group. Even if there were the technical possibility of WMF oversight, they obviously are not monitoring the situation. – Ajraddatz (talk) 19:21, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, Ajraddatz. But, (apparently), one of your fellow-steward thinks otherwise and his reply led me to ask Marco, as to these precise details. Please check the very last comments over User_talk:Mardetanha#You. Regards, Winged Blades of Godric (AWB) (talk) 19:26, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
I suppose having archives that can be accessed is a plus. I'll comment on the other talk page. – Ajraddatz (talk) 19:31, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Agree. Mailing lists are not much of a problem but private mailing lists are. Winged Blades of Godric (AWB) (talk) 19:36, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
I think that admin-only mailing lists are problematic because it leads to a lack of transparency and making decisions in private - but if we got rid of that mailing list we'd have to get rid of the lists for a lot of wikis, including Meta itself. *shrug* --Rschen7754 03:36, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Does Meta have an admin-only mailing list? At any case, no-body has (credibly) alleged of meta-admins/others exploiting the inherent non-transparency of these pvt. lists to make rubbish decisions! Winged Blades of Godric (AWB) (talk) 05:58, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Fawiki has a private admin-only mailing list as well since 2008! I have complained about it for years but to no avail. I would support getting rid of all private admin-only mailing lists. Unfortunately, I doubt that small or mid-sized communities can get rid of such mailing lists themselves, mainly because of the unbalanced power and influence of admins (big wheels). They may need the help of the global community. This does not apply to the private mailing lists of functionaries or such. But admin actions should be taken onwiki at noticeboards. Hello again. I am not sure who in specific to point to, but https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/query/JvLmREY2q0IU/#R does provide a list of recently closed tasks that created mailing lists. It looks to me that people that is listed in the "ops" column of Sysadmins dealt with them. The whole azwiki affair is not very known to me because it caught me in the middle of an illness, then very busy weeks, so I hadn't had any time to involve myself. I'm also not much of a dispute resolution guy and prefer to live in the wiki backlogs when I can. As for private mailing lists in general I don't think they're a problem per se. It just takes basic common sense to know that no mailing list, public or private, can be used to create policies or rule the wiki cabal-like (if an admin cannot understand that or is not willing to comply with that they probably shouldn't be an admin to start with IMHO). Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 15:13, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Hello all, I want to talk about azwiki community. I can't understand that why you fluff azwiki problem this much. I know that we had two admins who are against the wiki rules. But we already removed their rights both of two with the community desicion. And now azwiki problems are under control of our. I also want to talk about whatsapp/FB group. This groups created by some azwiki users and there are only 3-4 sysops in that groups. Our 3 burochrates are not in that groups and our sysops haven't private groups in the sosial networks. And now we need a official mailing lists for only all azwiki sysops, because some azwiki sysops aren't live in our country and some sysops don't use sosial network. The mailing lists necessary that we easy communicate with all our sysops. If you want we can involve one WMF member in our mailing lists for clearness. Thanks in advance. --eldarado 06:15, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Please translate the Editing newsletter

Would you please translate VisualEditor/Newsletter/2019/July into your favorite language for me? I'd really appreciate it. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:30, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

@Whatamidoing (WMF) and Quiddity (WMF): It seems Rocío Mantis already did translate it into Spanish. Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:29, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for checking it. I asked several people for some of the most popular languages this time, because I wasn't sure who would be free (so many people on holiday this time of year). I really appreciate you taking a look. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:42, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

LTA Plenoempleo

Buenas.

Is this expected? --Rschen7754 18:27, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

Yes. Known bug (task T90978). I'll try to exclude the bots from that page. Thanks. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:24, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
