Future of the Bosnian sister projects

[edit]

Dear MF-Warburg, I would like to inform you, a member of the Language Committee, that the Bosnian and Serbo-Croatian community is currently discussing the future of the Bosnian sister projects (Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource and Wikinews). Possible mergers and/or project closures are on the table, so I will reach out to you soon to discuss the best way to implement the community consensus when it emerges. Best regards, Aca (talk) 12:56, 5 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the note, let me know if there should be any input from Langcom before reaching a decision. --MF-W 14:18, 6 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Alright. In that regard, there is actually a question on Incubator where LangCom's input would be highly appreciated. – Aca (talk) 20:50, 7 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I fear I don't have anything useful to contribute to that at the moment, apart from what Jhs has already said. But of course it would be good to find a solution to the technical problem. --MF-W 22:51, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Dear MF-Warburg, I would like to inform you about the decisions made by the Bosnian and Serbo-Croatian communities. The following proposals emerged and were agreed upon during the discussion:

  1. Bosnian Wiktionary should be merged/integrated into the Serbo-Croatian one, with Bosnian administrators becoming the administrators of the joint project. Pages from the Bosnian Wiktionary should be transferred to the Serbo-Croatian project. If the target page already exists on the Serbo-Croatian Wiktionary, the source page should be imported as a subpage with the bs language code.
  2. Bosnian Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, and Wikinews should have their domains expanded so that they use the sh language code. I'm not sure if the project renaming is feasible at the moment. Is there any other way to achieve this? Alternatively, could these projects be incubated under the sh language code?

I don't know which procedures would be best applicable here, so I'm looking forward to your response. Thank you in advance, Aca (talk) 22:58, 11 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Aca:
1. I see there was the discussion you linked on bswiki, and a discussion on shwiki is linked there. Does there need to be a discussion on bswikt/shwikt as well or are the same users there? Maybe at least a notice should be posted. For example, if I am not mistaken, user:Barishan, a bswikt sysop, has not participated (but I do see that the other two sysops have agreed). – If and when the proposed change is to be implemented, I suggest the Bosnian Wiktionary admins apply to become admins on the Serbo-Croation project, and they (or other users) acquire the importing rights to move the pages over; maybe deleting pages on the Bosnian site once they were imported to the Serbo-Croation. When the move is finished, Bosnian Wiktionary could be formally closed through a PCP that will merely "ratify" the move already done by the community.
2. Unfortunately renaming domains is not possible at the moment and I think it will stay that way for the foreseeable future (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/view/2943/). The existing Bosnian projects could of course be closed and a "replacement" with the sh code be set up. Anyone is free to start sh projects in the Incubator anyway, but I think it would be possible to look at the projects on a case by case basis to see whether the Incubator time for an "sh project replacing a bs project" could be sped up. -- MF-W 20:51, 15 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, perhaps it would be good to have sitenotice and notice on Village pump posted on bswikt. I didn't expect that the merger could be done this way, so I will notify the community and see if someone is interested in implementing it. As for the PCP, would these requests be described as "closures" or "deletions"? – Aca (talk) 19:37, 17 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Those would be closures. -- MF-W 10:53, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Blocking in the Incubator

[edit]

Good afternoon! Why did you block me in Wikimedia Incubator for "long-term abuse"? I made a strictly conscientious contribution, clearing the wiki of language hijackers and vandals. Таёжный лес (talk) 16:03, 20 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

I think you rather look like a language hijacker yourself. --MF-W 10:15, 21 March 2025 (UTC) I have asked User:Sotiale to give his opinion as another Incubator admin. --MF-W 17:07, 21 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Why? I didn't make any changes to the content — I didn't write articles or add information into them. Таёжный лес (talk) 10:37, 25 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Таёжный лес: I have unblocked you on Incubator. --MF-W 12:17, 13 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Wikiforum

[edit]

Hello MF-Warburg, was Wikiforum a proposal to create a dedicated forum/discussion place for all Wikimedia projects? I wanted to contact you on this as you deleted the page and I want to make sure I am not suggesting an old proposal. I think a Wikiforum that allows discussion on Wikimedia projects can foster a stronger community. This is different from Wikimedia Forum, this would have dedicated forums to specific websites and specific topics. Also it would have its own custom software, based on MediaWiki and overall be optimized for a forum like Reddit. DotesConks (talk) 03:19, 4 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

DotesConks: The page started with: >>Wikiforum is a basic forum extension for Mediawiki 1.4. It emulates basic forum features using Wiki system.<< At fr:Wikipédia:Wikiforum there is still basically the same page in French. --MF-W 14:18, 6 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
@MF-Warburg Would my proposal be struck down as being the same as the previously proposed one? Wikiforum is a dedicated forum created by the Wikimedia foundation while the previous suggestion was just adding forum features to MediaWiki. DotesConks (talk) 18:11, 6 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
The page was describing a MediaWiki extension, it was not a proposal for anything. --MF-W 19:19, 6 April 2025 (UTC)Reply

Requesting ProofreadPage imports

[edit]

Good day. I would like to request the import of the three key MediaWiki templates for export to Minnan and Central Bikol Wikisource. There are works on there which are backed by Index: pages but are hard to navigate, and the main namespace works have lines of red text on each page boundary, which affects both the reading experience and search results. Doing this would greatly help us in porting and publishing more scanned works in their respective languages. Thank you very much. ColossalMemer (talk) 06:01, 11 April 2025 (UTC)Reply
