Hello and welcome to my talk page. Please feel free to leave a message and I will get back to you.

Congratulations, Dear Steward!

[edit]

Hello MBisanz! On behalf of the stewards' election committee, congratulations on your appointment as a steward! Your permissions have now been set and you are able to start the work.

You have been added to the list of stewards and the stewards' chart. Please take a moment to check that your details are accurate and update them if necessary. In addition, please subscribe to checkuser-l, the private mailing list for Wikimedia checkusers, and stewards-l, the private list for stewards. In addition, you will be given access to the related private wikis, one for checkusers and the other solely for stewards, details of which will be provided.

If you use IRC, please contact an operator for access to #wikimedia-checkuser and #wikimedia-privacy. Please also idle in #wikimedia-stewards when you are available for duty.

Best of luck with your new tools; I am sure you will do a fantastic job. Please remember that your fellow stewards are always available if you need a second opinion, either via the mailing list or on IRC.

Thanks! -- SLV100 (talk) 05:32, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I was only able to do the 2008 and 2009 requests as I do not have accounts on the other projects and even stewards are unable to create accounts on locked projects. I've emailed the list asking for advice. MBisanz talk 00:05, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I have two ideas:
  • One is a semi-solution:
We can ask User:Pathoschild, a steward that has accounts at Wikimania 2006 and Wikimania 2007, to fulfill the Wikimania 2006 and Wikimania 2007 requests.
  • The other one is a little radical, but it is a solution:
None of the registered users at Wikimania 2005 are stewards, but two are responsible former stewards, User:Oscar and User:Sj, that also have accounts at Wikimania 2006 and Wikimania 2007, and both had their steward right removed by self-request (see Oscar's request and Sj's request). You can ask one of them if he is willing to fulfill the remaining Wikimania requests if you temporarily grant him the steward right.
Thanks for fulfilling the previous requests! -- SLV100 (talk) 03:18, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Those are good ideas, but after talking to the other stewards, we've decided that these old, closed wikis are worth updating for this sort of thing as they are meant to be archival and will not continue to be updated for other out of date information. MBisanz talk 14:27, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Username change

[edit]

Hello, Previously I had my username Ramajois and changed it to Shriram. I had contributed to kn.wikipedia.org with username Ramajois. But due to visiting that wiki, account with my new username Shriram was created. There are no burecrats in knwiki. I'm asking you here because I dont know where to place 'this' kind of request! Can you rename Ramajois → Shriram please? I have placed a req in meta wiki for other merging other wikis. But this actually needs to be renamed for getting my contributions back right? If you want I can confirm with a talk page edit in knwiki. Thank you. Shriram (talk) 14:55, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, if you can confirm with a talk page edit on kn.wiki, I would be able to do the rename. MBisanz talk 15:00, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I got confused which to confirm. So I've done both. diff1 and 2. Please change Ramajois → Shriram

Dear MBisanz, Please clarify why you have removed my request after approving it? Thank you. Jargal (talk) 00:07, 18 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

bxr.wikipedia

[edit]

Why have you given me a Sysop status? The election was to permanent! Plese give me it, if it is not a problem. You will not regret it when you will see that in the beginning of 2014 Buryat wiki has 1,000 articles and a lot of active users. Thank you. --Gubin (talk), 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for stopping by. I gave you temp status because of the current size of Buryat wiki's community. There is only one other admin and they are also a temporary administrator. As the community expands and the number of articles grows, you can become a permanent admin, but until then, you and the other administrator will need to come back here every six months to renew your temporary adminship. It is in no way a reflection on you or a limit on your admin authority, but a reflection of the current size of the community. Thanks. MBisanz talk 01:06, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
You do not work on this wiki, and I work. There are 10 active users and 20 active bots. We have a community, and at the last time it was created almost 50 new articles! I do not have enough time and enough opinion of 6 months to do all that I want! And I do not want to come back once more. --Gubin (talk), 10 September 2012 (UTC)
If you have more to do after six months, just come back and let us know and we'll extend it. I'm sorry, that's just the way it works. MBisanz talk 18:50, 10 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gubin and an illegal image uploading in Wikipedia

[edit]

Gubin has a negative experience in image uploading at Commons [1], where Gubin uploaded a lot of illegal content and mystyfied file descriptions. Next Gubin was trying to upload illegal images in Russian Wikipedia [2], but was stopped by admins [3], Gubin didn't got a rollbacker flag [4] as his activity in ruwiki was nonconstructive. He uploaded illegal copy of nonfree image in Mongolian Wikipedia [5] (Google finds its better version [6]) and also he used his sysop flag to block me when I was trying to convince him the images he uploaded to the bxr.wikipedia are illegal. The image [7] is a screenshot of the video file 'UB rising' (1:33) created by the M.A.D. agency (Gubin agree with this) and it is nonfree (Gubin agree with this also) but Gubin doesn't want delete this file and blocked me [8]. M.A.D. Agency disclamer is here[9] ('You may view, download for caching purposes only, and print pages from the website for your own personal use, subject to the restrictions below. You must not: (a) republish material from this website (including republication on another website); (b) sell, rent or otherwise sub-license material from the website; (c) show any material from the website in public; (d) reproduce, duplicate, copy or otherwise exploit material on our website for a commercial purpose; (e) edit or otherwise modify any material on the website; or redistribute material from this website except for content specifically and expressly made available for redistribution (such as our newsletter).') We had a discussion about this screenshot [10] where Gubin declared this file nonfree ('that is why I have uploaded it not to the Commons but to the Wikipedia' - Gubin said [11], next he declared this file 'the single image of the MAK-Tower in Ulan Bator (Mongolia) used in the single article about this construction'). Next Gubin replaced the non-free screenshot[12] with the file derived from the Commons file [13] (this file also looks to be a screenshot but I didn't find the original video, Gubin declares this file under self cc-by-sa-3.0 licence). person you made admin at ks.wp

[edit]

[19]

I did not see any inform of local community. Unfortunately this person should NOT be admin, I published several pages in this site. He is a Hindu nationalist who tries to replace works in Kashmiri with words in Hindi language.

Previously the main page was written in Sanskrit and Urdu languages, not Kashmiri. Later, a user replaced these foreign texts with text in Kashmiri language: [20] in addition to translating much of the interface and creating many stub articles.

Now users u have made admin, restores foreign languages text to top of Kashmiri site, moves pages from Kashmiri to Sanskrit titles, and suggests for deletion pages written in real Kashmiri just because they are short. He admit on his own user page, [21] kashmiri not his native language.

Please, undo the damage, allow the Wiki to remain neutral and undo political extremism wrought by that user. Thank you for listening.

I want to add, he even replaced the logo to switch the script of the Wiki. He says "Devanagari is more dominant" - what a joke, even in Hindu majority India, the Official script for Kashmiri is Perso-Arabic! 99.9% of Kashmiris, even Kashmiri Hindus, uses this writing, not Hindi writing. Although their writings are welcome in ks.wikipedia, it is wrong to try to dominate it and replace most common, normal writing.

This user has never written a single original sentence in Kashmiri... I doubt he even speaks the language at all. He is only at the Wiki to push his politics agenda of anti-Arabic script!

There was a request here. MBisanz talk 14:18, 2 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Don't make rude comments like that against me, I suggest you create a blog to vent your anger on hindus. you can check my contributions on en.wiki, there I have never edited on pro-Hindu articles (or any Hindu article of any sort), and on hi.wiki I have started the whole Wikiproject Islam and have created & expanded many pages like hi:इस्लामी संस्कृति(islamic culture), hi:मस्जिद(mosque- which I hope will gain FA soon) If you check I now decided to separate the scripts, by starting a test wiki for the Nagari, and I am currently removing the Nagari from the actual wiki, Devanagari is used and if you look closer online you will see more Devanagari Kashmiri sites as opposed to Persio-Arab ones, look at the request how I crossed out the fact to deleting and said I shall continue to contribute in the script it is already in. This is the problem I feared would happen, so I'm working to remove the Nagari from ks.wiki and move it to kas.wiki. If I must say, Kashmiri is not my native language, I am learning Kashmiri still but I know enough to manage this orphan wiki, and I do not know Sanskrit and even if you look to my Hindi contributions, they have a problem because I use too many Urdu words that they are not familiar with. we have just got a new user come in and use Devanagari, I directed him to the testwiki and also posted it on the talk of the main page, I was also in a position of confusion and had you been there to help then I would have done this long back --फ़ाराह् देसाईं खान (talk) 19:55, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
And I'm a she and my name is not in Sanskrit either, what kind of Hindu political activist that has a sanskrit name will create numerous articles about Islam and use an arabic vocabulary in hindi? --फ़ाराह् देसाईं खान (talk) 19:58, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
You published several works in the wiki, are you the Khargosh? who published articles with one word and file, you could have made it a sentence at least? or maybe you don't know Kashmiri either but claimed it on your userpage? and you're telling me how I don't know the language. and the Khargosh also deleted a few Devanagari Kashmiri articles claiming it was not Kashmiri? --फ़ाराह् देसाईं खान (talk) 20:48, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Regarding some of the comments made here I have requested for my username to be changed at Steward requests/Username changes#फ़ाराह् देसाईं खान@global. --Farah Desai KhanTalk 11:50, 13 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kashmiri

[edit]

Hello, when I reached to Translatwiki.net, there are the 3 options for Kashmiri, ks-arab, ks-deva, and just ks, I don't know how to but I would have ks for the arab script and kas for the Devanagari script. The people who were concerned about this problem and who left messages in the wiki now seem to be inactive, please show me where to take this matter up? --Farah Desai KhanTalk 14:57, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm just asking. What it actually does I have seen for many users? --Kolega2357 (talk) 22:20, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

It lets users alter how the site responds to them to provide shortcuts and additional editing tools. Mine lets me delete global accounts and unify accounts at multiple wikis faster than if I didn't have it. MBisanz talk 22:55, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Important announcement: Election delayed by one week

[edit]

The Election Committee regrets to advise that it is necessary to delay the start of voting in the WMF Elections 2013 for one week. This delay is being implemented for three reasons:

  • We have been unable to verify that the list of eligible voters is complete and that all voters meet the published criteria
  • We have been unable to verify that the SecurePoll setups for the election are properly functioning
  • The voter interfaces have not been translated and are not currently available in any language other than English, thus disadvantaging Wikimedians who do not read English.

The following changes are now made to the Election timeline:

  • 8-22 June 2013: elections
  • 23-25 June 2013: vote-checking
  • 25-28 June: publication of results.

Dariush Kashani Overturn Deletion

[edit]

Mr. Bisanz, as deleting administrator is it possible to overturn the deletion for Dariush Kashani, an actor. I am following directions from here at bottom of page - [22] Dariush Kashani is an Iranian-American actor with notable appearances on TV shows, a demo reel is here: [23] His IMDB page shows notable credits [24] and you can reference other links, I am certain, to support restoring his listing. Thanks so much, in advance!

Usurping Eric

[edit]

Hello M, and thanks for your help here: Steward_requests/Username_changes#Eric.40dewiki. But no good deed goes unpunished, I'm afraid...I can't seem to create an account on de as de:Benutzer:Eric. I'm guessing the problem stems from the name being taken across a bunch of wikis by another user, who now uses the SUL Folkvanger. If you go to the special:mergeaccount page for Eric--sorry, don't know how to link that for you--you'll see that all the links there redirect to Folkvanger. He has no interest in retaining Eric, as you can see in our discussion from last year: es:Usuario_discusión:Folkvanger#Eric_on_Commons. If there's an easy way for me to take over that SUL, I'd like to do so, though I don't know if you are the person to bug with the request.

Another issue/question: I did not realize that when I created EricUniqueUsername here on meta that it would propagate across wikis. I meant it to be a temporary account, which I now suspect was sloppy form on my part, and I will want to eliminate the account as soon as I/we resolve the Eric unification. Thanks in advance for any help or tips. EricUniqueUsername (talk) 13:30, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

To the first question, we don't have a procedure in place to forcibly rename accounts like the de.Eric. We will in the future though. As to the second question, don't worry. When you're done using it, those extra EricUniqueNames can just be left unused. MBisanz talk 22:28, 25 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the info. Is there something I can ask the current owner of the username to do that would open up the username, at least on de.wiki? I think he would be perfectly willing to help. EricUniqueUsername (talk) 00:52, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sure, if he says yes, I'll do the rename. MBisanz talk 03:41, 28 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I put a message on his talkpage asking him to give you the ok here. Do you mean that you would be doing a rename of EricUniqueUsername to Eric on de.wiki? EricUniqueUsername (talk) 02:16, 29 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I would first move current de.Eric out of the way and then move de.EricUniqueUsername to de.Eric. MBisanz talk 14:10, 29 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, I can't seem to raise Folkvanger--he hasn't edited on his home wiki (es) in a couple months, and not on de.wiki for a few years. de.Eric's last edit was in May 2011. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I hear from him. EricUniqueUsername (talk) 15:29, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the delay, I've been offline for a long time. Please, go ahead with the renaming, I confirm I no longer use Eric anywhere nor want to retain it as my username. Happy New Year for everyone, and again, sorry for taking so much time to answer! Greetings, Folkvanger (talk) 19:18, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I moved Eric out of the way, so you should be able to globalize EricUniqueUsername. MBisanz talk 03:16, 3 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello and thanks to you both, @Folkvanger and @MBisanz ! M, does this mean you can now move EricUniqueUsername to Eric on de and meta (and anywhere else appropriate), as you mentioned a few post above? Note that I am currently Eric on en, fr, and Commons. Ideally I would like to abandon EricUniqueUsername, which I created as an interim login and do not want to use as my global account. Note: When I just tried to create de.Eric, it refused me, saying that the name was too close to several others. That seems to indicate that the name is available, but this new "too close" rule is preventing its use. EricUniqueUsername (talk) 18:24, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I just moved a bunch of EUU to Eric, so you should be good to go. MBisanz talk 19:38, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but I must be doing something wrong. de.wiki still won't let me create user Eric, though now the error message is that the user already exists. Then I tried logging in to de as Eric, as if I were now the holder of SUL Eric, but it doesn't like my password. Sorry if it's density on my part that's prolonging this process... EricUniqueUsername (talk) 21:05, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Try logging into Eric.de using your EricUniqueUsername's password. MBisanz talk 21:16, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ah, light dawns on Marblehead...that worked, and here on meta as well, as you can see. Thanks for all your help and patience, M! Eric (talk) 22:33, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. Let me know if I can help in the future. MBisanz talk 01:14, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help!

[edit]

I apologize for bringing this to your talk page. I am a long-experienced Wikipedian but I absolutely could not figure out how to make this request at the "ask a steward" page. Here is the situation: When global ID was implemented, my username MelanieN was assigned to me at all wikis except the German one. That was because there was a different person using MelanieN at the German wiki. But I see that the MelanieN userpage no longer exists [26] and the user hasn't edited since 2011 [27]. So I would like to ask that that username be linked to my global account. Thanks! MelanieN (talk) 20:05, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well, I may not have understood the problem correctly. Just now when I tried to log in at the German wikipedia, it accepted my login and password, so apparently I am already a user there. But there must be some wiki where I am not linked, because my Preferences page [28] says my global account is "in migration" because "Your account is active on 35 project sites. Unconfirmed accounts with your name remain on 1 project." I assumed the problem was with the other editor on de.wiki, whom I had long been aware of, but maybe it's not. What needs to be done to complete my global account? MelanieN (talk) 20:13, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Try logging in here. If your password doesn't work there, I'll rename it out of the way. MBisanz talk 02:19, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Nope. "Login failed, wrong password". I think you've identified the problem. MelanieN (talk) 03:02, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

Confirmation discussions

[edit]

Dear MBisanz,

As you probably know, the confirmation discussions for Stewards have been closed. In order to determine the outcome of these discussions, you are invited to comment on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2016 before scheduled closure of the confirmation section "one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards" (Sunday 6th of March, 17:22 UTC), though the closing time might be extended at the ElectCom's discretion for an extra week if it is believed "further input is required before concluding". All stewards are welcome to comment, including those newly elected.

For those who ran for confirmation, consider revising comments regarding you, and replying to those where appropriate. Savhñ 08:01, 4 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi,

  1. I have nominate one of user as a admin. But nominated user accept his nomination after 6 day to date of nomination. After voting started.if we closed RFA discussion after 7th day of to date of nomination so only one day voting bcoz in 6 day user can not accept his nomination. We want to continue voting after one week. Its acceptable or not ?
  2. One of user no edit in one year. He/she is come back for voting. So his/her vote eligible or not ?
  3. I have requested current admin to we want voting continue but she is closed voting as not done. So i have rollback her edit. She is blocked me. As per rule whats happen in this.-Yogesh Kavishwar (talk) 15:27, 18 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
The RFA must be accepted and open for 7 days. A user is eligible to vote if the rules of the Wiki permit it. Your block would be a dispute for the local community to resolve. MBisanz talk 03:10, 19 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Locking accounts

[edit]

I have noticed that recently you have been locking accounts which have only edited on the English Wikipedia, please stop doing that..It's technically an abuse of the Steward rights cause you only lock accounts that are either being abusive on multiple wikis such as vandals on multiple projects including spambots or those recommended by the WMF. Please stop locking accounts with no edits outside on the English Wiki just to boost your "steward stats". Thank you--Stemoc 02:23, 9 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

My apologies. I thought it was a preventative measure when I had extra time on my hands to go after the "low hanging fruit", but I see your point. Correct me if I am wrong, but it would still be permissible to lock-and-hide global accounts that have abusive user names, regardless of where they have edited? MBisanz talk 02:26, 9 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, infact thata why that hide option was added in the first place, they can be hidden regardless of the number of edits (if any) they have made, but they have to be either really offensive (as in an attack) or derogatory ...--Stemoc 02:58, 9 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

No renaming between November 20 and November 27

[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this because you’re a steward or global renamer. The Community Tech team are working on cross-wiki watchlists. We need to add a couple of fields to the localuser table in centralauth database. In order to be able to do this, we’d need to run a script that will get in the way of renaming users. Our apologies – we realize this is getting in the way of your work.

We ask that you do not rename anyone between 00:00 November 20 (UTC) and 00:00 November 27 (UTC).

(UTC means that if you live in the Americas, it will be on the evening or afternoon of November 19 when the script starts running, and if you live in Oceania or eastern Asia, it can be closer midday on November 27 before we can be sure the script is no longer running.)

Phabricator task.

If there are any problems related to this, or you have any questions, please write me on my talk page. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:39, 17 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Help design a new feature to stop harassing emails

[edit]

Hi there,

The Anti-Harassment Tools team plans to start develop of a new feature to allow users to restrict emails from new accounts. This feature will allow an individual user to stop harassing emails from coming through the Special:EmailUser system from abusive sockpuppeting accounts.

We’re inviting you to join the discussion because you have experience dealing with abusive sockpuppeting accounts and you work across many wikis. We think that your insights will help us build a better feature.

You can leave comments on this discussion page or send an email to the Anti-Harassment Tools team.

It is important to hear from a broad range of people who are interested in the design of the tool, so we hope you join the discussion and let us know how it would work best for you.
