Heyya.

On the 'privacy' part, prolly not a bad idea to mention stuff like google mail, as they don't divulge raw IPs in their header other than through a hash. Throwaway a/cs on gmail are the order of the day ;) Also, maybe mention that personal info should be need-to-know, really - Alison 12:10, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hiya, nice and witty essay! I love "we are volunteers" and "recommendation" parts in particular -- even while I decided to step out some of those protections finally. --Aphaia 12:29, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! As far as gmail goes, it's a great service and I'm firmly a Google fan (even if my Wikipedia-mail is a yahoo). The thing is, there's a difference between trust in the company and trust in your protection of yourself: Tomorrow, Google could change its policy and start putting your IP address in and post a little "Oh, change of service, btw" note to you and then the protection they offer is no longer true. I'd simply prefer people who are privacy-sensitive to make sure they're managing it themselves rather than trusting a third party to protect them.
Once you're taking care of yourself, then you can add-on third party protections and hopefully you'll simply be increasing your total protection, not damaging it (though this is not always the case). ~Kylu (u|t) 20:14, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Excellent essay; good advice on whole range of things. I wish every newcomer would read it. Many people -- even newly-minted admins, and maybe especially newly-minted admins -- don't take the privacy stuff seriously enough, or don't know it. Thanks for writing this!
