Input wanted
[edit]Dear JCJC, I would like to get your input on two things: our investment plans; and the way we are currently spinning off projects like the Education Program in North America.
Investment: we're looking into long-term investing and a possible endowment campaign. Our current reserves are roughly $30M which is invested very, very conservatively. I'd like to see examples of investment policies of other long-standing organizations: At what point does it make sense to have your own bespoke-managed fund? What are the alternatives for investments of this size? As you can imagine, there is a typical desire for liquidity of a few months' expenses, but our ability to turn on fundraising at will minimizes these risks and (in theory if not in practice) lets us make longer-term plans.
Education program: currently this is our only effort to reach out to groups of experts and cutting-edge researchers. And it focuses on having them get their first-year students to try editing; which leads to many conflicts with our well-read and research-savvy regulars. There is a lot of opportunity here but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on how to realize it; and whether an independent NGO with Foundation support is a good way to approach it.
