Add topicPersonal Attacks
[edit]You have written: ". . . is the name you used as a username". Yes, that's is true. It was my big mistake and I try to reverse it. That's why I left that account and set up a brand new. I did not use Changing of User Name feature, because I did not wish to have record about this in the logs. But Egg and others continued to harass me and to mock me. This was the reason that now I changed my mind and and wish to change my user name.
I wonder why Datrio has a right to break the policy? Why did he not answer me? Are stewards responsible to users, or only to Jimbo or the Board?
Is the civility policy only for normal users, or for stewards as well?[1] Is petition to be civil trolling or is not?
and the user that was banned by the Czech Arbitration Committee. Formally you are right. Actually I was banned by my two personal enemies. If you consider this kangaroo court as a legal Arbitration Committee, I don't. In my view arbitration shall not be task of the two anonymous people only.
I always consider Right to vanish as a right not to use bad chosen name, to be adressed by it and to be referred by it. If I wrong, please adwise how to vanish from all Wikimedia projects under my own real name while to continue under the other name. By vanishing I mean not to be adressed and referred by the former name, especially by trolls like Egg.
continuing to be a disruption to multiple projects Could you please explain this sentence to me? I have very deap and very long problems with cs:, I admit. But I don't have any problems with any other project. So which multiple projects do you have in mind?
as evidenced by your continued personal attacks right here I think that NPA is a policy even in Meta. Please, punish me for any personal attacks you have found that I commited. If you don't, I ask your apology for false accusation.
Thank you for you patience. -- Zacheus 08:44, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- Which multiple projects? Well, I've never edited cs for one thing, and, incidentally, last I heard, I'm still listed as a fascist on your blog. So your protests do ring hollow, I'm afraid. Dmcdevit 05:35, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think that my blog has nothing to do with Wikimedia. But even if you count it, I "disrupt" two projects only. (Albeit it is absurd to call editing of my own project disruption.) And as to fascism: everyone, who wishes to censure the Internet, is a fascist: Chinese communists and off-wiki regulators as well. It does not surprise me that the whole off-wiki issue was commenced clearly against consensus since breaking of consensus is a common feature for fascism of any kind. And if you meant by "continued personal attacks right here" my freedom of expression at my blog, you have no right to punish it, I am sorry. My blog is not here. -- Zacheus 14:51, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- Clearly those weren't the personal attacks I was talking about in context. My point is that it is clear to me that you have no grasp of the problem with personal attacks, and very little serf-control, and I don't see any reason to discuss the matter with you. It's a waste of time. Dmcdevit 22:13, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- I have very bitter personal experience with personal attacks towards me at cs: that no sysop wished to punish. I am a hunting game there even today. So believe me, I know what I am talking about. Concerning my self-control . . . You may ask the people to be angels, but is this a realistic demand? I am the one that I am. I translanted more than third of MediaWiki into Czech. And my reward for doing this? To be banned for one year. -- Zacheus 22:26, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Spam blacklist
[edit]Your recent edits to Spam blacklist[2] seems to cause some trouble for legitimate inclusion of external links, namely the entry "ld\.net" prevents addtion of urls such as www.gateworld.net and library.educationworld.net. See Spam blacklist#GateWorld. Can you modify the entry to "\.ld\.net" or something to amend this? --Kusunose 05:28, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia
[edit]Do you want to explain why you helping the Vandal MRSC on wikipedia. I not that you do not come from the disputed area. So have simply sided with MRSC who doesn't come from the disputed area and claims his just made up policy is wikipedia standard. It is not can I suggest you block MRSC until he stops vandalising wikipedia and makeing things up. I also suspect he is a County Watch Vandal.--JIrate 14:50, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- Why no reply? You seem to be quiet keen on abusing people passively don't you.--JIrate 13:09, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- And you continue to do so. I think you are being very rude. I will report you anti-social behaviour.--JIrate 17:57, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- The above is one of the reasons you were banned on Wikipedia. Calling other editors vandals is uncivil, and you surely know that, or are expected to, at least, by now. If you are not here on Meta to do anything useful besdes griping, you may find yourself blocked from here as well. Dmcdevit 23:30, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

- You have called me a Vandal so why do you not feel you have done anything wrong? Why do you feel MC whatever is not breaking the rules. It stikes me that you have a very limited grasp of the meaning of the rules. Were have I been any more uncivil to you than you have been to me. You have equally threatened me with blocking simply for acting like you do, is that not abuse of your admin powers. --JIrate 21:05, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
- I note the lack of an answer. Which is in and of itself abusive. The truth is this is the only chance you have got to bully people, and you have decided to take it. --JIrate 12:57, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Still no answer this is very rude of you, but of course you cant be rude can you, your to self righteous. Mind you you mentally defective pal MRSC is currently reverting any IP edit on the grounds it is a banned user. He is simply as mad an deluded as most of you admins.

dshuf()
[edit]A couple of questions on dshuf():
- why the strange indent in the middle (4th
shufsets[]
) - on which exactly pages is it supposed to work
- why addOnloadHook is not restricted to those pages only
∴ Alex Smotrov 14:22, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- This is primarily intended for the election pages. See [3] for some more information. However, I don't see any reason to restrict the number of pages it can be used on. As for the indents or other technical aspects, as you can see, it was written by Gmaxwell, not me. :-) Dmcdevit 19:05, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for the link, please next time mention it either in the edit summary or on the talk page (since related edit wasn't made by you, it was difficult to figure out).
- The issue with the script is that it goes through all the DIV's on all the pages, thus slowing down every page a little bit. It would be nice to call it like in the example below ∴ Alex Smotrov 22:26, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
if (wgNamespaceNumber == 0 && wgAction == 'view' && wgTitle.match(/^Board elections/))
addOnloadHook(dshuf);
- Have you actually noticed or measured the slowdown? I ask because it doesn't seem worth the loss in flexibility.. I wrote the JS so it could be used anywhere because there are a lot of other applications for random sorting. If it's causing a problem for anyone I would fully support limiting it to just the board elections. Keep in mind that many projects, including commons and en, run far more invasive JS (stuff that loops through and applies a regexp to every link). --Gmaxwell 23:49, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- I might agree that there is not noticeable slowdown but still that's not a good reason to run the code when it's simply not going to do anything. I think at least
wgAction == 'view'
is necessary here (nothing to do in history/diff, confusing in edit mode). As for flexibility: fine, let it run on any pages, although personally I don't believe it will be widely used (especially without announcement and documentation). P.S. Also maybe gettingdocument.getElementById('content')
first and then.getElementsByTagName('div')
wolud be a bit faster? ∴ Alex Smotrov 16:54, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Striking your vote
[edit]Hello Dmcdevit,
Thank you for your interest in the Wikimedia Board Election. The Election Committee regretfully informs you that your previous vote was received in error and will be struck according to the election rules, described below.
The Election Committee regretfully announces today that we will have to remove approximately 220 votes submitted. These votes were cast by people not entitled to vote. The election rules state that users must have at least 400 edits by June 1 to be eligible to vote.
The voter lists we sent to Software in the Public Interest (our third party election partner) initially were wrong, and one of your account was eventually included to our initial list. There was a bug in the edit counting program and the sent list contained every account with 201 or more edits, instead of 400 or more edits. So large numbers of people were qualified according to the software who shouldn't be. The bug has been fixed and an amended list was sent to SPI already.
Our first (and wrong) list contains 80,458 accounts as qualified. The proper number of qualified voters in the SPI list is now 52,750. As of the morning of July 4 (UTC), there are 2,773 unique voters and 220 people, including you, have voted who are not qualified based upon this identified error.
In accordance with voting regulations the Election Committee will strike those approximately 220 votes due to lack of voting eligibility. The list of struck votes is available at https://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php/List_of_struck_votes.
We are aware of the possibility that some of the people affected may have other accounts with more than 400 edits, and hence may still be eligible to vote. We encourage you to consider voting again from another account, if you have one. If you have no other account eligible to vote, we hope you reach the criteria in the next Election, and expect to see your participation to the future Elections.
Your comments, questions or messages to the Committee would be appreciated, you can make them at m:Talk:Board elections/2007/en. Other language versions are available at m:Translation requests/Eleccom mail, 07-05.
Again, we would like to deeply apologize for any inconvenience.
Sincerely,

- What exactly is that going to change? Dmcdevit 05:37, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- The last list of languages (100+) is currently a 100% width compared to the approx. 90% of all the others. Plus the syster projects have the annoying external sign like [4] The above code should fix both of these. I hope. It's not something that I just wrote, it's on wikiquote and wikipedia. It just got lost in some copy past process. --Steinninn 06:54, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

My essays
[edit]Hey, I saw your RfD. I understand how it looks:
There is a user who doesn't use Wikipedia for very long, is blocked, and now they're here writing essays. Must be a troll, right?
You see essays on here like WikipediAhimsa. I intend to do the same thing, but more broad and with a focus on Zen Buddhist philosophy in interpreting Wikipedia. By doing this, I hope to bring greater clarity to policy by explaining the appropriate philosophical underpinnings.
I especially recommend Zen guide. User:Kim Bruning said it was nice and sent it to several of his friends.
And the pages aren't personal: They're based on Eastern philosophy and I encourage people to read it and make changes. Zenwhat 12:18, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think an essay or two would be fine, but you are overdoing it. I have nothing against Eastern philosophy, or Zen. I love a Zhuangzi parable, and I've done spent a lot of time studying the Analects. And you know, the Analects records an interesting quotation from Confucius: "The Master said, 'This man seldom speaks. When he does, he is sure to hit the mark.'" Meta's collection of essays is already a mess unlikely to do anyone any good if they can't find something useful to them. Dmcdevit 12:31, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

- Read the new version of the WsUG page, and, if you feel like, add your thoughts about what should we do as a group on the talk page.
What do you think it's the first priority as a group of wikisource users, and what would you like to see accomplished? We'd very much like to understand what wikisourcerors want :-) --Micru (talk) 14:32, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Wikisource User Group and Community Poll
[edit]Hi Dominic. You receive this message because you signed the Wikisource User Group page: the User Group, as you probably know, is being evaluated by the AffCom, and they asked some questions that involve all interested users (as you are :-). Could you please take a moment to read these questions and answers for yourself? It is very important. Moreover, make sure you read and review the Wikisource community poll: we would like it to be filled in by as many users as possible, and we need really your help for that. If you want and can translate it, please write it here. Please contact us if you want to help: Wikisource is an amazing project, and it can be much more amazing if we all work together :-) Thanks! --Aubrey (talk) 08:55, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions
[edit]The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.
If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.
I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:04, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Movement Wide Finance Report 2014
[edit]Dear Dominic,
I’m Alex, currently a finance fellow (i.e intern) at the Wikimedia Foundation. I worked before for Wikimedia France, planning the Hackathon Lyon 2015 mainly. I'm today contacting you because of your activity for Wikimedia GLAM-wiki US Consortium User Group.
Last year, Finance Fellows produced a financial report that included financial activity from every chapters. It was great and has been presented at the Wikimania in Mexico.
If you haven’t seen the results of the Report 2013, here they are: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-wide_Financial_Trends_Report_2013
We’re currently starting the Report 2014 and this year we also want to include user groups to improve the scope of our work. I want to tell you that I’ve tried to make the process as short and easy as possible, so that shouldn’t require a lot of your time.
The aim of such a report is global. It helps having an idea of how the money is used across the movement, it helps chapters and user groups to learn about best practice and finally it leads to more transparency through a qualitative work, which I believe is important.
Could you briefly tell me if you had any income and expenses in 2014? If you are not the person responsible for this, please tell me who is the user the most likely to know this information.
I’ll be your contact for this project this year, I’m looking forward to working with you!
Cheers, ACella (WMF) (talk) 23:26, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Name uniformity and standardization ?
[edit]Hello Dominic,
Thank you for your National Archives and Records Administration related contributions to Wikipedia and Wikimedia !
I had a question about your name uniformity and standardization ?
- Here on your userpage at User:Dominic, it's given as Dominic McDevitt-Parks.
- This is the same name used at National Archives and Records Administration -- per their editorial note at this link: "For today’s post we are thrilled to open our blog space to NARA’s Wikipedian-in-Residence, Dominic McDevitt-Parks."
- But the commons category is under a different name, at commons:Category:Dominic Byrd-McDevitt.
Why is the commons category different than the Meta userpage and name at NARA ?
Just thought it'd be best to increase uniformity and standardization across all the sister sites -- what do you think ?
Thanks again for your varied and valuable Wikimedia contributions,
-- Cirt (talk) 22:58, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Cirt: Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been busy with a newborn recently. To answer your question, I changed my last name several months ago when I got married. I never got around to changing it everywhere, since there are so many places to change. "Byrd-McDevitt" is my current last name, but "McDevitt-Parks" is what I have been known by for all of my time on Wikipedia before this year, and that's why historical references to me us that last name. My preference is for my name to be Dominic Byrd-McDevitt wherever I am referenced. Dominic (talk) 13:47, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
Inspire Campaign on content curation & review
[edit]I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.
All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,
