Add topicSerial spammer LTA (BlyatPutin)
[edit]Can you please Globally Rangeblock the underlying IP range of I Hate DFPS (talk • contribs • block • xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • CA • gblock • ST • lwcheckuser) for at least 6 months (set to "anon-only")? The underlying IP range should also be swept for Sleepers. Based on the contributions (mainly spamming articles en masse with spam/attack categories), it looks like BlyatPutin is back. Given his past behavior, it's only a matter of time before he creates more socks to resume his mass spamming/attacks. If he's using another set of proxies, than that range should be blocked for over a year. LightandDark2000 (talk) 15:05, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- Done. IP range blocked for a year. All the accounts on there have been locked. @LightandDark2000: cheers. Green Giant (talk) 15:13, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

@Green Giant: Can you please also Lock and Check these socks as well? Based on some of the deleted pages that were re-created, I'm starting to suspect that BlyatPutin could be the LTA Willy on Wheels, or another vandal who happens to be working with him. LightandDark2000 (talk) 15:16, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- Done but no Checkuser because they last edited more than three months ago. Also, @LightandDark2000: you don’t have to ping me on my talkpage because I am notified whenever someone edits it. 😉 Green Giant (talk) 15:35, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- Profiling statistics for an abuse filter tell how often edits match the filter. The statistics for the abuse filters were reset after 10000 actions. Wikis can now decide to reset it more or less often. They can file a phabricator task to do so. [1]
- Abuse filters will now treat integers and floats more precisely. For example, 5/2 was rounded down to 2 but will now be 2.5 and 2*4 will be the integer 8 and not the floating-point number 8.0. Division values are the only ones changed. For the rest only strict comparisons (
===
and!==
) will be affected leaving the values unchanged. [2][3] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 April. It will be on all wikis from 19 April (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 17 April at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 18 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The new PDF renderer could not create PDFs from books. Books are in this case collections of pages on a Wikimedia wiki. PediaPress will take over development of the books-to-PDF function. [4]
- Pywikibot will no longer support Python 2.7.2 and 2.7.3. [5]
- Volunteer developers can fill out the Wikimedia Communities and Contributors survey. The last day is April 22 (UTC). This is a third-party service survey. See the privacy statement.

LTA trolling
[edit]Hello. Can you please Globally Rangeblock all of the IP ranges abused by User:Cruizir? He's currently hopping across various different proxy networks and trolling other people (in addition to his cross-wiki abuse), so his IPs should be blocked. Since he's currently using proxies, they can probably be Globally Rangeblocked for at least 1-5 years ("anon-only"), and preferably, his home IP range(s) should also be Globally Rangeblocked for at least 6 months. (Open proxies need to be blocked for at least a year anyway.) I've listed some accounts below you can use as a reference (the IP's confession is absolute BS). Thanks. Hi. I need a little bit of help.
[edit]Please read. I left this message at Bsadowski as well since it is the only name I recognise from old times but he seems very inactive so if you are more active take a look. I won't spam anyone else.
I'm sorry to bother you but I'm in a bit of a mess. I rarely get involved in Wikipedia stuff anymore because I have trouble navigating the many intricacies of it. I edit rarely but I read a lot! Recently I stumbled upon an oddity of 100s of Swiss accounts contributing with fairly benign edits being banned/blocked over a period of 5 years by a small group of users citing them as sockpuppets of one single person. It all seemed to so weird to me, that someone would spend so much time on this. That some single individual somewhere would create hundreds of accounts to make benign articles and contributions about the country without ever challenging their constant blocking...even the admins and checkusers doing the locking acknowledged that they couldn't make sense of it.
So in the interest of trying to make sense of it I tried to get everyone engaged to explain themselves and suggested that perhaps what was happening was that a bunch of people from some cultural institution in Switzerland are being payed to update articles about the countries constitution, research, hospitals, culture, etc and that maybe we should let them do it!
What followed was a barrage of threats, an indefinite blocking of my account and two and maybe soon three denied appeals without ever explaining to me what I did so terribly wrong to be excluded forever from Wikipedia. So please I don't know where else to turn, all the admins I've contacted seem to be backing each other up but I've really tried to stay civil and I don't know what I am doing wrong. Please help. Thanks. You can see the events in my log on the English Wikipedia. edit: I just saw the good old "Assume good faith" one some of your pages (haven't seen much of it these few days I've been here). I think the main problem is that they didn't and now they feel backed into a corner and I understand that's a hard position for anyone to be in. The little ferry (talk) 00:08, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- @The little ferry: There is nothing I, as a steward, can do about a local block, because the stewards are not a Wikimedia-wide appellate body. Let me clarify that "assume good faith" primarily applies to content editing and is a guideline rather than a policy. From what I can see, you have registered your account yesterday and almost immediately started discussing this issue. It isn't difficult to see why this might raise suspicions. In this environment, many users choose to be as anonymous as possible, which means we don’t have the same cues as we would for face-to-face or verbal communication. You don’t know who any of those users are outside Wikimedia and they don’t know who you are in real life. This means that at face value (sorry for the ironic choice of words) none of us know for sure if you are an innocent user with good intentions. We have had numerous instances of blocked users creating new accounts to continue their disruption. Sometimes this has included creating accounts that appear to innocently raise the issue of their blocks. The only things we have to go on are your edits, so I think you should forgive long-term contributors for being a little skeptical of such users intentions.
- Let me ask you something in return. If it is a Swiss institution that is creating these accounts and articles, what is stopping them contacting the Wikimedia Foundation to express their concerns? As you stated above, you are struggling to understand the intricacies, so why are you pursuing the matter, unless it affects you directly? My recommendation to you would be to just drop the issue entirely for a year. Go do something else e.g. editing on one of the other wikis like Wikinews. This time next year, if you still wish to edit, send in another unblock request, stating which areas you are going to edit and that you intend to contribute constructively. I hope this has clarified the problems we have and how to solve them. Green Giant (talk) 10:22, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- That question in your second paragraph is a great question to ask and the one they should have asked first! Well the reason is that I love reading about the country. I have been there only once but I've thought about moving there many times. Well as I was reading about their newest referendums I came up on this article, as I said in the first post I made and it was scheduled for deletion. It was a great little article that explained everything you needed to know. So I looked into why it was being deleted and the reason wasn't so much the article but who made it. So here you have a situation where people are asking to delete an article, not because of the content it has but because there is a chance that someone who started it is a sockpuppet of someone else (and this seems to have happened many times over with this group). And so this concerned me, obviously, since I would not have been able to read about it had it been deleted! In a year I'll probably have a new IP, a new location and a new PC so my fingerprints will be few. But I doubt I'll come back after getting this harsh of a treatment! I would love to contribute to Wikinews but the project seems so dead now. Just a few articles per month. Maybe I'll write up a little something about a retro gaming convention happening here soon. Oh and why the possible organisation wouldn't...well I'm not sure but after having experienced this myself I'd say it could be because the admins are a pain in the a** to deal with :P The little ferry (talk) 13:04, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Blocked—totally accept but a little confused: ‘long term abuse?’
[edit]Hello, I made two edits last evening without understanding the website at all, and I really apologize. I should not have edited anything without understanding Wilipedia’s Complexity and etiquette , and I shouldn’t be allowed to edit at all until I really learn to do things in the right way. I will be taking time to reflect on what I did.
My only point of confusion is: ‘long term abuse’ was the reason.
I am a newb who (super-ignorantly) just tried editing last night, again which I assure you I won’t even think of attempting until I take the time to really learn, and really don’t think I’ll do ever again.. it’s key to show proper respect to the way things are done here. So blocking makes sense.
I just don’t understand the ‘long term abuse’ part. I’m super new to this.
Again: I’m not lobbying to gain access to anything, I deserve to be blocked for my haphazard editing, and I realize that my carelessness amounts to disrespect. I deserve to be blocked. I just want to understand how you think I’ve done long term harm, past last night’s unacceptable edits, so I can see what happened too, so it doesn’t happen again. I will probably never edit again, or try to access this side of Wikipedia. I really don’t want to hurt the delicate ecosystem here, let alone in the **long term**... I am pretty bad at this kinda stuff and don’t want to make things a pain for expert level moderators and admins. Thank you! 107.77.227.11 00:36, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hello. I’m sorry that you are being affected by this block. It isn’t a personal block and should not be seen to be solely for your edits. I only took this action because the range has been used by 33 vandalism/abuse/impersonation accounts in the last three months alone, forming about 60% of all accounts on the range in the same period. If you have an account that is stuck because of the block, please let me know and I will see if a block exemption might be possible. I have modified the block to expire on 18 May. Range block 89.12.0.0/17
[edit]Hi Green Giant, I am affected by this range block "for long-term abuse" from April 11 until June 11, my own IP currently being 89.12.26.202. Not really a problem, my next IP will probably be from a different range. I just wonder if the block makes sense for such a long period, since it is only dynamic IPs from a major provider, O2, and being assigned one of these addresses is purely coincidental. 89.12.26.202 07:49, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hello. I’m sorry that you are being affected by this block. I only took this action because the range has been used by 42 vandalism/abuse/spam accounts in the last three months alone, forming about 80% of all accounts on the range in the same period. If you have an account that is stuck because of the block, please let me know and I will see if a block exemption might be possible. I have modified the block to expire on 10 May. Hi there. Vandyrandy is back, this time as Brentonpoets2. Can you please lock the account and check for sleepers? The underlying IP range should also be Globally Rangeblocked to prevent further cross-wiki abuse. The IP range might be the one I listed above. I've filed a report at m:SRG. Thanks. Recent changes
- The parameter for unpatrolled edits in recent changes filters changed name. You might need to update saved filters and links. [9]
Problems
- We are migrating wikis from Tidy to Remex. Because of a bug the 250 wikis which do not yet use Remex were switched on 23 April. This is two months early. This meant that pages with broken wikitext showed wrongly to readers. The bug was undone the next day. You can help fix broken wikitext to avoid this problem when your wiki switches. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. You can follow the process on Phabricator. [10]
Changes later this week
- You will be able use CodeMirror in the 2017 wikitext editor on all wikis. CodeMirror helps with syntax highlighting. It has previously been a beta feature and only available on wikis with scripts that are written from left to right. [11]
- When an administrator blocks someone they will have a calendar they can use to choose when the block ends. This is to make it easier to pick a specific date. [12]
- You can soon turn on the Performance Inspector in the Editing section in your preferences. It shows information about the performance of pages. This could be the size of modules in the page, how many CSS selectors are defined on the page and how many are used, or the size of the images on the page. This tool is intended to help editors fix pages that load slowly. [13]
- There is a new abuse filter function called
equals_to_any
. You can use it to check if its first argument is equal (===
) to any of the following ones. For example you can use it to check if the page's namespace is amongst a given set of values in a more compact way than you could earlier. You can read more on mediawiki.org. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 May. It will be on all wikis from 3 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 1 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 2 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Cloud Services team is working on a new project called Toolhub. The goal is to make it easier for Wikimedians to discover software tools they can use. You can leave feedback on the talk page or email jharewikimedia.org to leave private feedback.
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in all namespaces will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 2 May. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Wikibooks wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch on 9 May. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [14][15][16]

Blocking of 109.40.0.0/20
[edit]Hi Green Giant, what was the reason behind this block? --King Rk (talk) 12:56, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- @King Rk: Hi, in the ninety days before the block that range was used by almost 100 abusive or vandal accounts out of approximately 130 accounts in total. Are you being affected by the block? Green Giant (talk) 17:11, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- No, I'm asking because we had some issues with a low-level troll at de:WP within this range. He was gone for a while and now is back under a new IP. So I wondered if the block had something to do with him. But that's probably not the case, since he's more like a monothematic discussion troll than a vandal. (Unless you tell me the vandalism had something to do with swastikas, then I will get suspicious ...) Anyway, thanks for info. --King Rk (talk) 18:34, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
- @King Rk: The vandalism was by multiple people as far as I’m aware, but I don’t think it was specifically swastika-related. Green Giant (talk) 18:56, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

212.95.5.... block
[edit]You have blocked a whole Provider (T-Mobile A) with dynamic IPs. Not a smart and friendly gesture from you, because in this case a lot of people can't add something here and you scare them away... --212.95.5.232 13:39, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
- Hmm... what’s not so nice is the range being used by 250 abusive/vandalism/offensively-named accounts in the previous ninety days as opposed to 25 normal accounts. It’s a small and smart price to pay if it prevents the creation of such unfriendly accounts. Green Giant (talk) 18:30, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
Blocked range is 117.200.0.0/16
[edit]Hi, Need to add information on few pages, but i'm not able to do so. Actually because of the block, I'm not even able to create an account for myself. could you release the block so I could create an account and start adding to wikipages of my interest...

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia Commons mobile app has a new version. It is now easier to find nearby places that need pictures. It helps you with direct uploads and title and category suggestions. The app only works on Android phones. [17]
Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem with blocks where you had changed how long they last. It used the default length everywhere. This was in late April. Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [18]

IP Address Blocked from Editing
[edit]My IP Address has been blocked from editing articles. I would request you to please unblock it. Thank you. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 117.201.179.152 (talk) 06:53, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
- As part of protecting Wikimedia projects from anonymous vandalism, at times we are forced to block ranges of IP addresses. Due to the dynamic nature of IP addressing, these blocks may sometimes affect innocent users as well. The global block you mention is not directed at you personally, and the reason why you cannot edit or create an account is that your IP, or the range in which your IP falls, was previously used by someone to vandalize a Wikimedia project or projects and was blocked to protect that project or projects.
- If you have an account already and cannot edit, please contact the local administrators of your project and ask whether or not you are eligible for the 'ipblock-exempt' group. If they assign you to that group, please log back in to your account and check if you can edit afterwards. If you still cannot edit, please get back to us with your wiki username so we can investigate further.
- If you don't have an account, but wish to create an account, we can assist but only by email at stewardswikimediaorg. We will need a desired username and an email address to which a temporary password can be sent. Usernames can be changed afterwards, but please do not abuse that privilege. Please do not send us any password, a random one will be generated and sent to you by the system. Before creating an account please note that once created accounts cannot be deleted. We'd appreciate if you could check our privacy policy for that.

Hi there. I just want to let you known that at m:SRG, a CheckUser requested the Global Block for this range to be upgraded to a hardblock, because the vandal operating this range was using it to compromise accounts (at least 2 accounts have already been compromised). Since you were the one who enacted the original block, I just wanted to let you know. Thanks.
- Can you please also block the logged-in accounts for the first range, per this request? The LTA operating the range has been trying to hack into user accounts. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk) 14:24, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Can you please also rangeblock these IP ranges and check them for sleeper accounts (The IP should also be Rangeblocked locally on Meta-Wiki, given the recent socking activity on this site.) Cruizir has been using these IP ranges to evade his block recently, and he has also been socking and trolling some users cross-wiki this week. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk)

Backlogged Account Lock requests
[edit]Can you please take care of some of the reports I recently filed at m:SRG? The reports I thinking about are the ones about the spambot groups (near the top of the list), and the group of reports around the "Iniced" and "TryToBeFunny" Spambot LTA reports. They've been sitting there for a while and no one has acted on those reports yet. Thank you. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:20, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- Can you please also lock this spambot: कैलाश चंद्र कुमावत (talk • contribs • block • xwiki-contribs • xwiki-date (alt) • CA • gblock • ST • lwcheckuser)? You missed that one. The edits from this account are all spam. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk) 03:14, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- Done apart from this one and two others. The CU suggested they were not directly related and this accounts edits aren’t exactly spam. I’ll keep an eye on it though. Green Giant (talk) 15:30, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
