Wikipedia logo v2 rollout

[edit]

I see that lots of logos are still missing. When those wikis are switched to Vector+logo-v2, will the logo default back to the English version or to Wiki.png? I suppose the former, given that also local wiki.png should be updated automatically by some staffer before re-pointing logos to them as it's supposed to happen per cary on bugzilla. --Nemo 09:13, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

This should probably be asked on commons:Talk:Wikipedia/2.0. I'm just trying to cleanup things and get all of the information down in one place, that's the place for coordinating the actual Wikipedia logo v2.0 roll-out. Cbrown1023 talk 16:26, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you (although it's quite weird to use Commons instead of Meta for similar things :-p). --Nemo 18:24, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Standard titles

[edit]

Are we going to move logos to the standard title as soon as possible, or should we wait for something? For instance, if the wiki logo points to a Commons image will it still work after the image has been moved? And, do we know what logo we should move to the standard title where there are more (e.g. Wiktionary)? Should the link to the current logo position be added to the table? Finally, who is going to move images (do we have some willful sysop on Commons, or will we have to request local sysop/movefile right)? --Nemo 09:13, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think we're going to wait for the table to get mostly complete and then see about moving them. I'd probably talk to Cary first to make sure that I have his backing, and then move them myself and possibly get other Commons admins to help. I'm taking things one step at a time, so I haven't worked out all of those details yet. Cbrown1023 talk 16:25, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, let me know if you need help on Commons in case you can't find anyone to move files. --Nemo 18:24, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikibooks

[edit]

I see that the slogan is still inconsistent. There's been a long discussion on that and we might want to check it again, but at least for currently missing translations we should try to be sure that they're consistent. --Nemo 09:13, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Where is it inconsistent? Pretty much all of the translations except cs (which is allowed to have a different one) and sq (which hasn't been updated yet are using the new slogan). They're not all exact translations because that really doesn't make sense for a slogan... it should be mostly home-grown but follow the spirit. (For example, I've been telling people that they should feel free to translate it as "free" instead of "open", if it doesn't make as much sense.) Cbrown1023 talk 16:23, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
There's also b-de ("Die freie Bibliothek"); with regard to open/free, I agree on flexibility, and I can't speak about other languages, but e.g. in Italian a literal translation would have worked. I was just noting this to remember that I have to re-check that discussion when I have more time. --Nemo 18:24, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource

[edit]

Why isn't the Wikisource slogan striked out? It's not supposed to be added to the logo, but please note that some Wikisources have recently added it, starting with fr.wikisource (which has suggested to do so to several other Wikisource communities, even without a central discussion/decision). --Nemo 09:13, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Although it's not on the logo, the slogan is translated for every Wikisource, so it's definitely something we want to keep note of. Cbrown1023 talk 16:11, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Does this apply to Wikiquote, Wikinews and Wikiversity, too (copying MediaWiki:Tagline might be enough)? For Wikisource, though, I think that we should keep an eye on those diverging logos... --Nemo 18:24, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think just Wikisource, because that's the only project with a standard slogan like that that's not on the logo. Though if it becomes an issue and other projects object to not being on the list, I guess we could hide the Wikisource slogan from the page. Cbrown1023 talk 00:16, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The nn translation (Den frie ordboka) has been on the list since the beginning. It would nice if someone could make a localised version of the new logo go live on nn (I have minimal experience with creating such files myself). --Njardarlogar (talk) 14:07, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I will be going through the list on Thursday, November 8, and I'll make sure to create the Nynorsk logo too. odder (talk) 22:13, 5 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Serbocroatioan wikipedia

uses two scripts, Latin and Cyrillic. Cyrilic text is Википедија (Wikipedia), Слободна енциклопедија (The Free Encyclopedia) -- Bojan  Talk  02:36, 18 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I am aware that the interface of the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia uses both scripts, but since 99% of its main namespace articles are written in the Latin script (or, at least, I have not once stumbled upon an article written in the Cyrillic script while randomly clicking through this wiki), I decided to suggest a version of the logo that only uses the former. odder (talk) 19:55, 18 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Incorrect. Majority namespace articles were written in the Cyrillic script, but the sysop OC Ripper is against Cyrillic and he selfwillingly changes the text into Latin script, no consensus, no discussing it with original author. He disables the revert to the original Cyrillic text by creating Cyrillic name that redirects to Latin script name. That is how the Cyrillic texts disappeared. Gusskie (talk) 20:07, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
As  Bojan  written uses two scripts, Latin and Cyrillic. Cyrilic text is Википедија (Wikipedia), Слободна енциклопедија (The Free Encyclopedia). Please do not discriminate Cyrilic script. Serbo Croatian wikipedia plans using both scripts same as on Serbian wikipedia, having tabs for transliteration. So reducing logo is not natural. --Prado (talk) 13:51, 19 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
It appears that TheStefan12345 created a logo written in both scripts, so I'll go ahead and replace the current one with his version. odder (talk) 13:20, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please change font of logo, this font is very ugly.--Calak (talk) 17:54, 18 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Calak, thanks for the feedback! Can you please let me know why you think Pak Type Tehreer is an ugly font? It's been suggested to me by a LangCom member who tested various Arabic fonts (I myself had a look at the Amiri font, too) and came up with the opinion that PakType Tehreer was quite a good font for Arabic logos. Thanks, odder (talk) 20:00, 18 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for the help—can you please point me to a page that shows consensus for this slogan? I had searched your wiki for a sign of it, but was unable to find it… Thanks! odder (talk) 12:32, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
This is now resolved; I uploaded File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-myv.svg and File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-myv.png which use the new tagline. Thanks for your help! odder (talk) 13:46, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Need some help ...

[edit]

Dear Cbrown,

I am working on the catalan version of the Wikiversity ("Viquiversitat"), it is still a beta version, but it would be very useful to have the official logo with the name translated into catalan. I have been searching around and could not find the font of the English (and other) versions to do it myself, and I'm still not sure if I am allowed to modify it or not since it is copyrighted. At the moment I am using the Spanish version for the templates and so on (see: Projecte d'aprenentatge for instance), but it would be much better to have it in catalan. Any help will do. Thank you in advanced, --Luna92 (talk) 17:03, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Logo for yiwiki

[edit]

Can someone please explain what is wrong with the current wiki logo for yiwiki and why it needs to be changed? --Redaktor (talk) 16:41, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

The current logo does not have a vector version (SVG), which means that it isn't usable except for the top-left corner of your Wikipedia. I have a new logo entirely from scratch upon comments from Amir E. Aharoni, the author of the original logo, who told me it's even better than his version. odder (talk) 19:55, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
But why have you changed the layout of the text? --Redaktor (talk) 19:34, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Because I had to re-draw it from scratch? If you don't like it, just say so, I'll leave you in peace with your unusable PNG logo. odder (talk) 20:07, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
????? I do understand the need for a vector version of the logo. But the new text does not conform to Yiddish orthography. It should use the ligature which appears in the current version. --Redaktor (talk) 13:11, 31 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I asked Amir to have a say in this discussion, let's wait for his opinion. odder (talk) 17:54, 1 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Redaktor, what ligature are you talking about? Unless I'm missing something, it says די פֿרײַע ענציקלאָפּעדיע, which is the same text as on the main page of yi.wikipedia. Do you want the pasekh under the yudn to be higher? Or is it something else? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the two yudn with a pasekh is a single character. Thanks. --Redaktor (talk) 11:48, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would appreciate if someone translated this into regular English. Thanks :) odder (talk) 13:05, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not really, because I don't know all the relevant Unicode codes. Perhaps you could tell us how you constructed the text, because it seems to differ from the text in the current logo. --Redaktor (talk) 22:03, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I just copied the text from this very page and inserted it into Inkscape, and then coverted that text to path. If my Inkscape isn't broken, then perhaps the text is incorrect? odder (talk) 22:25, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Very interesting, but that is not the globe that appears on yiwiki ! --Redaktor (talk) 10:07, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It is. odder (talk) 10:51, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
@odder The text under the globes is different from the text in the column "The Free Encyclopedia". --Redaktor (talk) 06:04, 15 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Logo for crwiki

[edit]

We would like that you wait before updating crwiki's logo (unless there is something urgently wrong with the current one ?). We will need a discussion to how better reflect all dialects of the language in the logo, since now it is written in only one dialect. So please wait for the result of our discussion before updating the logo, thanks. Amqui (talk) 16:52, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm flabbergasted. The new logo does not differ from the current one in any way except for the fact that it uses the new (v2) globe. Why do you need to discuss it now? I suggest we go ahead, replace the old globe with the new one, and in case you decide to have the text written differently, simply change the text in the new logo directly on Commons (I can do this myself). odder (talk) 18:06, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
There are differences in the text, unless you can point me to a discussion where the differences in the text have been discussed, we would need to wait for the on-wiki discussion. Not all dialects use the syllabics used in the logo, not mentioning the differences in the wording, I don't see the point of updating for something that isn't correct. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 20:57, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
The text was provided at this very page—see yourself. odder (talk) 21:12, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Amqui (talk) 23:20, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Goodness gracious, great balls of fire! odder (talk) 23:32, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

What's wrong with having it in different dialects? PiRSquared17 (talk) 23:35, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I hope you are not saying that because I wrote in French, because seriously if you want to make global action like that and you are too lazy to translate French... Amqui (talk) 23:37, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
W sumie możemy sobie pisać każdy w swoim języku, przynajmniej będzie zabawnie :) odder (talk) 23:40, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please update the Wicidestun / wikisource logo with this one. Diolch. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 20:07, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, but I have two questions. Do you confirm that the name is Wicidestun rather than Wicitestun as the table says and if yes can you possibly link a discussion about it? Second, is that choice of font intentional and really important to you or can our resident expert odder replace it with the standard Wikisource logo font (which looks different to me)? Thanks, Nemo 20:58, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi; many thanks. Yes it is as written: WICIDESTUN. We have mutations in Welsh (as with all Celtic languages); as 'wici' here is an adverb, the noun 'testun' (text) needs mutating (or soften up!) from y "t" to a softer "d". The article (using this mutated version) can be found here: https://cy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicidestun. Our technical terms, accepted on wiki is also to be found here: https://cy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicipedia:Geirfa. Many thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:27, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just to confirm: are you waiting for me? Let me know if I need to do anything else, please. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 21:51, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
No, we are waiting for odder to draw the logo. Don't worry. --Nemo 22:19, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Llywelyn2000 — can you please answer the question about your choice of the font? Is this intentional, or would you prefer to use the same font as in the English Wikisource logo? (Not sure what that font is, but we'll sort it out.) Thanks, odder (talk) 10:35, 18 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
