It seems I have been blocked from editing the Indonesian wiki. As near as I can tell, from the google translation is that (1) you blocked me; (2) that you blocked me because you believed I was ... "Inputting spam to promote a person, company, product, service, or organization, or accounts that appear based on their editing history to have been created with the primary or sole purpose of promoting a person, company, product, service, or organization."

I discovered this block, just now. Jessica Pressler is an American journalist. She is an individual for whom we have multiple free images. The image used by wikidata, File:Jessica Pressler, of New York Magazine (7455721902).jpg, while freely re-usable, is less than ideal. It is low resolution. Ms Pressler seems to be squinting.

Sometimes notable people ask, or even demand, that we delete images of them that they consider unflattering. I've always promised those people that we are committed to good faith, that our volunteers will use the most flattering images we have of them. I have encouraged people who are concerned their free images are unflattering to upload their favourite selfie, and put it under a free license.

A more flattering image was uploaded to the English language wiki. The userid that uploaded it suggests it was uploaded by Ms Pressler herself, although fans and frenemies can easily create wiki-IDs that look like they are owned by the people they love or hate.

The more flattering image is used on the English language article about her. It was when I included that image into Commons:Category:Jessica Pressler I realized that her wikidata page used the smaller and less flattering image. So, I updated it.

I checked. Most of the articles about Pressler automatically updated to use the same image as wikidata. Yah!

The Indonesia article and the Bangla article did not.

So, even though I don't understand Indonesian, I can navigate an article written in Indonesian well enough to replace one image with a similar but superior image. I succeeded in doing this with the Bangla article.

WRT to the self-promotion accusation... I have no ties to Ms Pressler. I did a limited amount of work on her article -- years ago. That is it.

Is it "self-promotion" for Ms Pressler to upload an image of herself? I suggest that, when an individual is already notable enough to merit a standalone article on a wiki, or even merit a relevant paragraph in an existing article, we should encourage them to upload their favourite selfie, instead of punishing them for "self-promotion." Some people attend comic-con, or some other event, where we can count on fans to take pictures of them and then upload them, under free licenses. But, for most people, the best source of images available to us are their own selfies.

Can I ask if you did place a block on me, on the Indonesian wiki?

Can I ask, if so, when did you place this block?

Can I ask, if so, did you already provide an explanation for your block, somewhere? If you did block me, but didn't provide an explanation for that block, could you please provide an explanation, now?

If the explanation for that block was that you genuinely believe I, Geo Swan, was engaged in self-promotion, let me repeat that is absolutely untrue, as I have no ties to Ms Pressler.

If the explanation for that block was that you genuinely believe that en:User:Jessica Pressler was engaged in self-promotion, may I repeat, that, for most people who merit standalone articles, the best source of portraits are when those people upload their favourite selfies, and I think it is a mistake to then target them for "self-promotion".

If you don't think you can offer a defensible justification for blocking me, then I request you revert your block, and leave a note in the block/unblock log saying the initial block was a mistake. Geo Swan (talk) 05:57, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have seen your user account history on idwiki. But you were never blocked on idwiki. I see you were blocked on enwiki Ariandi Lie Talk with me 11:06, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I get the read-only box a blocked person gets, accompanied by a template, that seems to be a translation into id of the English template that tells one they are blocked.
The third line of that template says: "Penyuntingan dari ‪2607:FEA8:0:0:0:0:0:0/32‬ telah dibatasi oleh ‪Ariandi Lie‬ karena alasan berikut"
While that template says I should be able to edit my own user talk page, I tried, and that was blocked too. Otherwise I would have pinged you from my id.wiki user talk page.
Did you block someone, two days ago, with an IP close enough to my IP that their block slopped over onto my block? The block template says my block will expire on October 5th.
Yes, I was blocked on en.wiki... When looked at, in detail, the history of the interaction between myself, and the administrator who first blocked me, shows they had held a childish grudge against me, for half a decade. So, please, don't take that childish act of vendetta into account when deciding whether to look into this further. Geo Swan (talk) 02:18, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
