Strengthening Existing community with WikiTungi[edit]

Wikimedians during the first-anniversary celebration of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi
Puri Wikimedians during second Wikidatathon

WikiTungi, was formed to train the community members (new and old) and to introduce them the broader Wikimedia Movement and projects, other than editing, to bring them out of the online world and interact with the other community members. The WikiTungi has been a common platform for Odia Wikimedians in Bhubaneswar and Puri to share and gain knowledge of the Wikimedia projects. The concept of WikiTungi was coined with the formation of the Nalco WikiTungi, after that two other Tungis were formed in Odisha, one in Puri and the other one in Bhubaneswar. The CIS-A2K has been supporting the two WikiTungis (Bhubaneswar and Puri) for over two years. The Tungi members in Bhubaneswar meet once in every month, while the Tungi members in Puri meet bi-monthly. The formation of WikiTungis has helped in an increase in participation of Wikimedian in offline meetups and has also helped in an increase in reach of the Odia Wikimedia projects. Gatherings like WikiTungis helps in doing brainstorming sessions for Wikimedians and has also helped in planning and execution of different Wikimedia projects. Over the years the WikiTungi program has catered over 20 active Wikimedians and above 50 individuals in its meetup.

Advance Wikipedia Training

Advance Wikipedia Training is an advanced level training for Wikipedians to acquire skills by learning tools, to find a dead end, non wikify, orphan pages and take help from them to improve the articles and improve the quality of articles in Odia Wikipedia. It also includes training the Wikipedians on how to do outreach programs, approach institutions and collaborate with the institutions.

Image-a-thon

Image-a-thonis a practice for the quality improvement in Odia Wikipedia, for adding images to the articles, and which aims Odia Wikipedia to have "at least one image in one article" The first phase of Image-a-thon was organized in Puri WikiTungi, In the first phase almost 7 Wikimedians took part, and 150 images were added into Odia Wikipedia articles.

Wikidata

Odia Wikipedia was one of the first four Wikipedia's to have article place holder extension with the help of MKar. A series of Wikidata translation event has been organized after that to translate Wikidata labels in Odia. A Wikidata lable-a-thon event was organized during the 7th Puri Tungi meetup, Eight Wikimedians from the city joined for the edit-a-thon and translated 220 labels in Odia language. The event was focused on International Women’s history month and the labels translated were related to the articles created so far in Odia Wikipedia’s WHM edit-a-thon. Wikipedians were taught about the Wikidata game and other tools of Wikidata.

Planning and Execution

WikiTungi helps CIS-A2K and community members to meet physically and plan for the event. Future events are discussed within the local community members, and tasks are distributed accordingly within the community members. Over last one year, the local community members have helped in localising the global projects such as BBC 100 Women, Euro-Vision etc.

The meetup space for WikiTungi meetups was provided by Wikimedian Subas Chandra Rout, but from March 2017, the Sambad Group has provided a place for the space Bhubaneswar WikiTungi. On February x 2017, the community members gathered at the restaurant to celebrate the volunteer participation of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi for over one year. Tanveer Hassan, the program manager of the A2K program was also part of the anniversary celebration; the community interacted with the CIS-A2K employees and planned to adopt some changes in the Tungi Program.

  • The Tungi members will invite one of the global community leaders for a Skype or hangout session.
  • Discuss the best practice from the global community and discuss them with the community.
  • Updating the minutes of the meeting and sharing them with the other community members.
  • Updating the learning and evaluation team about the new learning of the community every month.
  • The community will also send Postcards as a souvenir to the participants of the global community for the online sessions.

Cultivating new editors with workshops[edit]

Increase in the number of editors from diverse field and work will help in increase in diverse content on Odia Wikipedia. The community members and the CIS-A2K program identified some institutions to bridge this gap in the Odia Wikimedia projects. The A2K members along with the community members have organized workshops in institutions in different regions of Odisha. In the last workplan the A2K program approached two institutions in Western Odisha, one in Central Odisha and two in Coastal Odisha to increase the number of editors as well as diversity among the Wikipedia editors in the Odia Wikimedia projects.

Workshop in Indian Institute of Mass Communication

The Odia Wikipedia community has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal from 2013 for reaching towards the students of mass communication and bring them to the Wikimedia movement. On 31st January 2017, A Wikipedia workshop was organised in Indian Institute of Mass Communication for the Wikipedia workshop, More than 45 students from both Odia and English department took part for the first introductory workshop.

Orientation Program in Imperial College

An orientation program was also organised at Imperial College, Bargarh to introduce 60 students from the college to the Bargarh digitisation project and to introduce Odia Wikipedia to students, the event was the second program in Western Odisha.

Workshop in Sambalpur University

Considering the University has 196 colleges under its affiliation in seven different districts of Western Odisha, a workshop was planned in Sambalpur University to spread the awareness about Wikipedia movement and establish networks in the region. An orientation and workshop event was initiated by the Odia Wikipedian community members was for students of Computer Science and Application Department and Odia Department at Sambalpur University. The 57 participants, including 5 faculty members, consisting of 30 male and 27 female participants. The event was the first workshop held in Sambalpur University and the second one in Western Odisha after three years.

During the programs in various institutions, the community members and the A2K has identified some common barrier for the failure in editor retention or interest after the program, often it is difficult to follow-up with institutions due to academic calendar of the institution, almost 70% participants do not know, how to write in Odia language on Internet or on Odia Wikipedia.

Bridging the gender gap in content[edit]

Participants during Sambad "100" Women Editathon
The follow-up event of the Sambad 100 Women Editathon on the month of May.

There was need of resources for improving the articles on Women personalities on Odia Wikipedia, the community and CIS-A2K, identified the problem and bridged the gap between the Archival house, like Sambad, one of the most circulated newspaper and a media house in Odisha, to get the content from Sambad and improve the articles on Odia Wikipedia. Odia Wikipedia community in collaboration with the Sambad and the Centre for the Internet and Society organised a two-day 100 Women Edit-a-thon in the month of March. The event was inspired by BBC’s 100 Women series and edit-a-thons with the same name in December 2016. Where BBC opened-up its archive for the Wikipedians to improve the articles on Women personalities.

The Edit-a-thon in Sambad was organised for two days, with over 20 female journalists from the organisation, who later edited and improved Odia Wikipedia articles on "Women achievers" with the help of content donated from the Sambad group as a part of the collaboration. For most of the journalists, editing the Odia Wikipedia was a very new platform to work on, hence on the first day, the journalists were introduced on how to edit Wikipedia and on the second day the journalists edited the articles on Odia Wikipedia. After the main event, the community members have organised one follow-up event and planning to organise more follow-up event in future.

Enriching Odia Wikipedia with Edit-a-thons[edit]

Participants during Asian Athletics Championships Editathon

Thematics edit-a-thon are always successful on Odia Wikipedia, It helps in increasing content of certain topics, which are very less represented on Odia Wikipedia. The A2K team has supported the community members in planning and organising two edit-a-thons, International Women's History Edit-a-thon and Asian Athletics Championship Edit-a-thon. In Women's History Edit-a-thon 13 Wikimedian from the community added 233 articles into Odia Wikipedia, and in Asian Athletics Championships, 14 Wikimedians and new editors added and improved 12 articles in English and Odia Wikipedia.

Digitisation project[edit]

Bargarh Manuscript Digitisation Workshop

Availability of digital resource on internet is very less in Odia language, with the help of digitization the community members of the Odia Community members are making Odia Wikisource a key platform for the availability of copyright free Odia books on the internet for free, which not only creates a digital platform for books, It also helps in improving the content of Odia Wikipedia in terms information and citations. The CIS-A2K has supported two digitization projects of the Odia community members; Pothi project, a project by Wikimedian Prateek Pattanaik to digitize to collect and digitise rare out-of-copyright Odia-language books, and digitization work in Parija library in Utkal University, Chinmayee Mishra is digitizing the copyright free books available in Parija library and uploading it to Odia Wikisource, the A2K has provided a scanner to Chinmayee to scan the books in the Utkal University. A2K also initiated a digitisation project in a 300 years old temple in western Odisha, to digitise old manuscripts of the temple. Two orientation program were organised for the temple administration, but the digitisation project failed due to the problem in availability of electricity and existing community member in the area.

Ratha Yatra GLAM was an activity carried out by WikiTungi Puri, where Wikimedians from Puri documented the process of chariot for 22 days during the Ratha Yathra Festival in the city. The Wikimedians spent over three weeks to document the important processes of this ancient festival at Rakha Khala where the chariots are made.
The project was the first GLAM activity conducted by Odia Wikipedians. Due to uncontrollable issues, the project was initially delayed by 15 days. This documentation work from Wikimedians in Puri helped in making the largest Open Knowledge resources available on Jagannath culture.
