From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
-
You start with a list of Wikimedia Commons file names in an OpenRefine project.
-
Select Reconcile... Start reconciling from the menu at the top of your file names' column.
-
If the Wikimedia Commons Reconciliation Service is not listed yet in your preferred reconciliation services in OpenRefine, you can add it here. Use the link https://commonsreconcile.toolforge.org/en/api (which you can copy from https://commonsreconcile.toolforge.org/). You can replace 'en' with the language code of your choice; if you perform data extension later, then the reconciliation service will add statement columns with labels in that language (e.g. 'beeldt af' for P180 if you have selected 'nl' as your preferred language)
-
After running the reconciliation service, matched files will be blue and clickable (linking to the corresponding file page on Commons).
-
The most helpful functionality of the Wikimedia Commons Reconciliation Service is probably the data extension feature. It makes it possible to retrieve Wikitext and structured data from files and moving these into columns in OpenRefine, allowing you to perform further operations on these. In order to start this process, select Edit column ... Add column from reconciled values.
-
Type 'Wikitext' if you want to retrieve the Wikitext from the files.
-
You can also type the name (label) of any properties for which you want to retrieve the values (e.g. Depicts, Location of creation, Creator...)
-
Here you see the result, with columns for Wikitext, Depicts and Location of Creation statements for each file.
-
If you want to retrieve the identifiers (M-ids or M numbers) of the Commons files, select Reconcile... Add identifiers column.
-
And voila! You now have a column which contains the M-ids of the files.
