Requests to change content
[edit]neutral user (changed)
[edit]Thank you for emailing us about the mistake. Since it is not sourced to a reliable reference, I've removed it from the article.
Please note that Wikipedia is a wiki, which means that everyone can edit pages. Instead of emailing us about errors, feel free to jump in and correct them yourself. Our articles are written by volunteers, and many started writing for Wikipedia by fixing errors they found. At the top of each page is an "edit" label. You can test it at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox>, or read about wikis at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki>.
For help contributing to Wikipedia, see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome%2C_newcomers>.
neutral user (not change)
[edit]Although we appreciate your interest in our project, I apologize that the email response team can no longer make changes to articles on request. Unfortunately, the limited number of volunteers involved cannot keep up with such requests due to the very large number of emails we receive daily.
However, I invite you to make the changes you suggested yourself. Wikipedia is a 'wiki', which means that everyone can edit pages. You don't need to apply or get special permission to join us. You can try editing a page at the Sandbox <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox>; simply click the 'edit' link at the top of the page. You can edit without logging in, although registering gives you more options and helps you keep track of your contributions. You can create an account at <http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Userlogin>.
If you're interested, please see our introductory pages at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome>. You may also find the tutorial useful at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial>.
Thank you for your interest, and I hope you join us.

See [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome] for more information if you're interested in contributing. Thank you for your interest in our project.
write it yourself
[edit]Many articles are missing from our encyclopedia simply because nobody has written them yet; the subjects are chosen by the editing community rather than by direct request. If you have information on a subject we don't yet cover, you are very welcome to begin writing an article yourself. If you're interested in editing Wikipedia, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome> is a good introduction. Also note Wikipedia's main inclusion policy at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability>. Alternately, you can propose articles at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Request_articles>, although this page has a lengthy waiting time.
Thank you for your suggestion and your interest in contributing to Wikipedia.

[edit]unverified (removed)
[edit]I have removed most of the content from that article because it violated our policy on verifiability at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:V]. Thank you for pointing out this problem to us, and I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.
unverified (prod)
[edit]Thank you for notifying us of the error. I was unable to find any sources supporting the information in the article in accordance with our verifiability policy at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:V]. I've tagged the page for deletion within a week unless someone else succeeds in finding reliable sources, as described at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:RS].
Note that Wikipedia is a wiki, which means that everyone can edit pages. Our articles are written by volunteers, and many started editing by fixing errors they found. offensive
[edit]I'm sorry you were offended by the article. As stated in our disclaimers, Wikipedia contains content that some may find offensive. Our goal is to provide full and accurate information for the education of all. In doing so, we sometimes include text and images that some may feel are overly explicit or unsuitable for children.
The inclusion of explicit content has been one of the hottest debates in the Wikipedia community. Some feel that the encyclopedia should be "work-safe"; others feel equally strongly that we should present full information. The content of such articles is a decision made by the editing community - there are no top-down decisions in cases such as this. Wikipedia is written by volunteers, and these volunteers make decisions on content according to consensus.
On specific articles such as the one you mention, it would be very difficult to give full and accurate information without including information on the disaster, etc. I hope that you will understand our desire to give all the information available to our readers.
The general advice often given in such cases is to closely monitor access to the Internet by children. The Internet as a whole is not very child-friendly.
The relevant disclaimer can be read at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Content_disclaimer>
offensive vandalism
[edit]Thank you for notifying us of the abuse. The user has already been blocked from editing and the article has been fixed.
Since Wikipedia is a wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki), anyone visiting the site can edit or add to pages. This openness is a great asset, as it lets interested users update and expand pages at will.
Although this openness leaves Wikipedia open to undesirable edits, most are corrected by other editors within a very short time. Editors have access to various tools to detect vandalism and watch edits, such as a recent changes page and watchlists.
I'm sorry you were exposed to such offensive vandalism. I can only offer you our sincere apologies and assure you that we do all we can to ensure that such malicious edits are repaired quickly.
To report future incidents directly to an administrator, please leave a note on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism and an administrator will take the necessary action.
Thanks again for your kindness in writing about the problem you saw.
vandalism
[edit]Thank you for pointing out the vandalism. By its nature Wikipedia is open to undesirable edits, but most such changes are corrected by other editors within a very short time. This one has already been fixed.
We always welcome new editors; if you'd like to contribute, see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome]. We have a recent changes page that allows users to check edits as they happen, and watchlists that allow logged-in editors to closely monitor pages they are interested in. There are also various tools used to detect likely vandalism. You can report incidents directly to an administrator on [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism], and an administrator will take the necessary action.
Quality (resolved)
[edit]I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. Fortunately, the problems you have pointed out seem to have been resolved. Please feel free to contact us if there are any further serious issues with the article; minor issues can be corrected or pointed out on the discussion page at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Pagename>. Thank you for your interest in our project.
Problem with user or block
[edit]dispute
[edit]Unfortunately, there is very little we can do to help you resolve this problem. Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia written by its readers; please see the dispute resolution process at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP%3ADR] for guidance in reaching a consensus. When editing based on information other editors may not be aware of, it may also help to cite external sources that they can refer to.
I'm sorry your experience with Wikipedia has been frustrating, and I hope you are able to resolve this dispute satisfactorily.
autoblock
[edit]Your problem is caused by something called the "autoblock", which automatically blocks IP addresses recently used by editors who abused their editing priviledges. This is meant to target malicious users, but it sometimes affects legitimate users such as yourself. This is unfortunate and we do our best to prevent this type of collateral damage. If you would like to find out more about the autoblock, please see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Autoblock>.
The autoblock should expire within twenty-four hours of the original block. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, and I hope you continue to contribute to Wikipedia.
open proxy (dynamic) block
[edit]Your account has been automatically blocked because you operate from an IP address (220.245.178.140) suspected to be compromised. That IP address was blocked roughly a month ago; if you have only recently been affected, it is possible that your Internet service provider dynamically changes your IP address. Try dropping your Internet connection and reconnecting, or waiting a day or two. It is likely that you will be assigned a new IP address which is not blocked from editing. For more information on why we block compromised IP addresses, please see <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:WikiProject_on_open_proxies/Help:blocked>.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
school proxy block
[edit]Thank you for your mail. Unfortunately, editors from that IP address have repeatedly abused editing privileges on Wikipedia, and the IP address has been blocked as a result. There is little we can do to stop vandalism from schools short of blocking edit access; your local system administrators may be able to control network abuse if they are alerted to this problem.
I apologize for any inconvenience this issue causes.
AOL proxy block
[edit]If you did not intend to edit, it's likely you clicked a red link on Wikipedia; red links lead to pages that don't exist yet. Because they don't exist, you automatically enter edit mode. If you encounter a "Blocked" message, simply click the back button on your browser to return to reading mode.
If you only want to read Wikipedia, you can skip the rest of this message.
When you connect to the Internet, you are assigned a unique address called an IP address; this lets web sites like Wikipedia send you web pages, much like the way physical mail works. Because your Internet access is provided by AOL, you are assigned an address that belongs to a shared AOL proxy. This IP address is like the address of an apartment building, shared by many people at the same time.
Normally, the only way to block vandals from this shared IP address is to block everyone using that address, which is typically a large number of AOL subscribers. However, we reached an agreement with AOL so that they send us the user's real IP address; this is like sending us the room number in the shared apartment.
Because we should now receive your real IP address instead of the shared address, it should no longer be possible to edit from the shared IP address. Since you tried to edit from that IP address, it's likely that a temporary problem with AOL caused them to send us the shared address, and that you'll be able to edit again in a few minutes when it is fixed.
If you have further questions or continue to encounter this problem, please reply to this message without changing the 'subject' box.
Questions
[edit]can't login
[edit]It seems that your browser has a problem which prevents it from keeping cookies from Wikipedia. There are many possible reasons for this. The simplest solution is to select the "Remember me" checkbox when logging in, which may prevent sudden logouts. If that does not work, please verify the following points:
- Check that cookies are enabled. If you are able to log in to other websites without problem, they most likely are.
- Verify that you haven't accidentally listed Wikipedia on a list of sites not to accept cookies from. This feature is available in most modern versions of Firefox, Internet Explorer, and other browsers.
- Make sure that your computer's date and time are correct. If it is incorrect, your browser may expire cookies before they are supposed to.
- Read the help files for any firewall or ad-blocking software you have installed. These may interfere with cookies from websites.
I hope you are able to resolve your problems, and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
lost account
[edit]Thank you for your email. Note that both your username and your password are case-sensitive, which means that capitalization makes a difference. For example, you cannot log in to "JohnSmith" by typing in "Johnsmith" (lowercase 's').
If you entered a valid email address when you registered, you can request a new password be sent to you. To do so, click on the "Log in" link in the upper-right corner. Enter your username, and click the button near the bottom of the page called "Mail me a new password". You should receive an email message with a new random password; you can use it to log in, then change your password in your preferences to something you'll remember.
Unfortunately, we cannot recover lost passwords for you, as we don't have access to other people's passwords. If you cannot recover your password, feel free to create another account.
I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced by these problems, and hope that you're able to resolve your difficulties logging in and contribute to our project.lost account (no edits)
[edit]Thank you for your email.
Note that both your username and your password are case-sensitive, which means that capitalization makes a difference. For example, you cannot log in to "JohnSmith" by typing in "Johnsmith" (lowercase 's').
I contacted a developer, who stated that you do not have an email address set. Unfortunately, we cannot recover lost passwords for you, as we don't have access to other people's passwords.
If you cannot recover your password, there are two ways you can recover your username. The easiest method is to simply create a new, slightly different username. Alternately, you can request that the existing account be renamed, and then create a new account as 'oiram'.
I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced by these problems, and hope that you're able to resolve your difficulties logging in and contribute to our project.deleted article
[edit]I'm sorry to hear that your experience with Wikipedia has been frustrating. Articles on Wikipedia are deleted according to our deletion policy: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_policy>.
If your article was deleted by an administrator without a discussion, that means the article probably met one of the criteria for speedy deletion outlined at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion>. If your article was speedy deleted, this may be because it was extremely short or because it did not provide information about why its subject was notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopedia.
If you believe after reading the deletion policy that your article was unfairly deleted, you can ask the administrator who deleted the article for a fuller explanation. You can find out which admin deleted the article by searching for your article title in the deletion log at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Log/delete>.
If after an explanation you still believe the deletion was unfair, you can bring up the article at Deletion Review (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review>) where the community can take another look to see if the article was deleted in error.
For more guidance on how to write a Wikipedia article, you might find the newcomers' guide to writing Wikipedia articles helpful: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Your_first_article>. The Tutorial is also a good reference for help on all aspects of Wikipedia editing: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial>.
I hope this helps, and I'm sorry for any trouble this has caused you.image permission
[edit]In principle all Wikipedia text is subject to the GNU free documentation license (GFDL) and can be used free of charge for any purpose. A specific permission for use is not necessary, as long as the license conditions are observed.
Images, however, are sometimes identified as being subject to other licenses. It is advisable to check the image information page for the source and/or licensing information. Clicking on the image will lead you to the image information page.
If the licensing conditions of one image do not suit you, it may be possible to contact the author of that image for alternate conditions. See in the description page if the author's name is present.
Please note that neither the Wikimedia Foundation, nor the authors of articles on Wikimedia sites, nor the volunteers answering on this channel provide legal advice. It is your responsibility, if you intend to reuse content from Wikimedia sites, to determine how the licenses of the content that we host apply to your intended uses.
mobile Wikipedia
[edit]Thank you for your mail. Wikipedia offers simplified stylesheets, although accessibility for very basic browsers is lacking. If you have an account on Wikipedia, you can change the theme you see while logged in. One theme, "Simple", is ideal for use with many mobile devices. To change theme, go to your preferences at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences>. Click on "Skin" to view the theme options, select "Simple", and click the 'save' button.
If you're using a very basic browser, there are online services which offer a text-only version of Wikipedia, such as <http://www.3g.co.nz/wiki/>. That website converts the latest version of an article, but does not allow you to edit Wikipedia.
I hope this helps. Thank you for your interest in our project.
GFDL violation
[edit]Thank you for your mail. In principle all Wikipedia text is subject to the GNU free documentation license (GFDL) and can be used free of charge for any purpose. A specific permission for use is not necessary, as long as the license conditions are observed. If you would like to find out more about the license we use, please see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GFDL>.
Please note that we do not provide legal advice, and you should determine how the license applies to your intended users for yourself if you decide to use Wikipedia content.
Thank you for your interest in our project.
Ask someone else
[edit]Help desk
[edit]Thank you for your mail. There is a page on the English Wikipedia where various volunteers try to answer questions such as yours, called the Reference Desk <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk>. Instructions for using the Reference Desk are on that page.
Though there is no guarantee that they can provide an answer, they are often able to. Good luck in finding the answer to your question.
Research request (unencyclopedic)
[edit]Thank you for your email. If you would like information on the subject, our encyclopedic article is <URL>. However, the information you're looking for probably can't be found on Wikipedia. An excellent research service is Google Answers, which is available at a very low cost. If you're interested, please see <http://answers.google.com/answers>.
MediaWiki
[edit]Thank you for your mail.
The software upon which Wikipedia runs, MediaWiki, is released under the GNU Free Documentation License (see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GFDL>). You can download the software at <http://www.mediawiki.org>. Any questions about MediaWiki would be best directed to that website.
Please note that I am not a lawyer. If you have any doubts or questions about the GFDL or other legal matters, I advise that you consult with someone who is.wrong address (organization)
[edit]Thank you for contacting us regarding this issue. However, the address you have written to is the contact address for the Wikimedia Foundation, an international non-profit organization dedicated to free wiki-based content, which is not associated with <ORGANISATION>.
You might be able to contact <ORGANIZATION> at <URL>. Otherwise, you may wish to use a search engine or other resource to locate the appropriate contact address. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
wrong address (Wikipedian)
[edit]Thank you for your mail. Please note that the address you have contacted is that of the Wikimedia Foundation, and that the person you addressed your message to does not monitor it. If you meant to contact Adam Bishop, an administrator on the English Wikipedia, you can do so on his talk page: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Adam_Bishop>.
Thank you for your interest in our project.
Copyright
[edit]Faked release (copyright holder)
[edit]Thank you for your email. Sadly, it is easy to create a new email address and falsify such a copyright release; we need further evidence that you are really the copyright holder.
For example, please place an updated copyright notice on an official website belonging to the copyright holder, or email us from an address associated with such a website, or send the copyright notice through a verifiable and reliable lawyer. Any method that proves that you are really the copyright holder is good.
I apologize for the inconvenience this precaution may cause, and hope we can quickly resolve the copyright status of these works.
Faked release (not copyright holder)
[edit]Unfortunately, we need further evidence for legal purposes to confirm that the copyright holder has indeed released the work. We currently have only your statement that it is true.
For example, an updated copyright notice on an official website belonging to the copyright holder, or a confirmation email from an address associated with such a website, or a release sent through a verifiable and reliable lawyer. Any method that proves that the copyright holder has released copyright is good.
If you provide me with an official email address or contact form, I will seek confirmation myself. Please provide a list of images you would like released if so.
I apologize for the inconvenience this precaution may cause, and hope we can quickly resolve the copyright status of these works.
Wrong license
[edit]Thank you. However, the images must be released under a free license that allows publication, reproduction, modification, and use commercially or non-commercially with few restrictions. One such license is the GNU Free Documentation License <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GFDL>, which retains attribution and other rights for the copyright holder.
Even if you release the images, you can still sell them and publish them under a different license. However, they will also be available for free under the GFDL from Wikipedia and our mirrors.
Archived templates
[edit]These templates are no longer in use, but they could conceivably be useful in the future. They are visible in edit mode.
Sandbox
[edit]This section contains emails I've sent that might be useful in making future templates.
Libel
[edit]I sincerely apologize for the unusual delay in responding to your concerns. I have removed all content from the article because it violated our policy on verifiability at [1], rebuilt it from a news story I found on the subject, and warned editors to cite reliable sources when adding any additional content.
If you would like to suggest additional content, please post a comment on the talk page and provide sources we can refer to (click the 'discussion' link at the top of the page, then click on the 'edit' link). Thank you for pointing out this problem to us, and I apologize for any offense or inconvenience it may have caused.
Libel2
[edit]Thank you for your email. I'm sorry that we could not respond to your questions sooner; emails are handled by a relatively small number of volunteers. I've edited the article to address the issues you've raised.
Wikipedia relies on the good will and hard work of our thousands of volunteer editors. We have tools and policies in place to ensure that articles are factual, neutral, and verifiable. Although we always have some visitors who insert faulty information, we find that the balance is positive and that more people fix problems than introduce them.
However, there is no official editorial team verifying the information in Wikipedia. Although we take libel very seriously and volunteers such as myself are always available to address complaints, our general disclaimer (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer>) states that we cannot guarantee the accuracy of any information contained in Wikipedia. It is worth noting that similar disclaimers are found on the websites of britannica.com and bartleby.com as well, which are professionally reviewed.
Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia.
