About this campaign
[edit]What is this campaign?
[edit]This is an effort for Wikimedians in countries with low awareness and usage of Wikipedia to come together to think about how to raise awareness and understanding of Wikipedia in their local communities. We hope that people in Wikimedia communities around the world will develop ideas together on how to engage new readers.
When is this campaign active?
[edit]This campaign is for January 9 - February 8, 2018. Grant submissions should be finalized February 18, 2018.
What do you mean by “awareness”?
[edit]Awareness is the first step in building new use, support, and participation in Wikimedia projects. People can’t really use, edit, or advocate for Wikipedia without knowing what it is. Right now, we know that less than half of internet users in 145 different countries don’t even know the word “Wikipedia,” but many of them do know Facebook, Google, and WhatsApp.
Wikipedia is special, and we want people to understand what it is and how it can help them in their lives so that they can become part of the wider community.
How do I know if I am in a “low awareness region”?
[edit]We know that low awareness and usage are correlated from our research in 2016. So we can look at countries with low usage of Wikipedia and estimate that there is also low or misunderstood awareness in those countries. Loosely, we’re defining “low awareness regions” as countries where Wikipedia usage is less than 7.1 Wikipedia page views per month per internet user. Below is a table detailing how many pageviews Wikipedia pages receive per internet user in a given country:

What if I’m not in a “low awareness region” but I want to help?
[edit]If you come from a region with high awareness and usage of Wikipedia, but still want to support bringing in new readers in low awareness regions, you can volunteer to be a collaborator on ideas and projects that are proposed in the campaign. Some idea creators may need designers, video editors, project managers or volunteers with other special skills to complete their projects. You can also endorse ideas, ask questions or make suggestions that will help the idea creator refine or improve their project or idea.
But what about writing articles?
[edit]We love editors! And we hope that many of the people you reach through your awareness-raising efforts eventually start editing. But for now, we want to focus on bringing people into understanding Wikipedia’s value to them as a reader/consumer. Later, once people understand how to use Wikipedia, then we can help them learn to contribute to the encyclopedia.
About Inspire Campaigns
[edit]What is an Inspire campaign? Why are you running them?
[edit]Part of IdeaLab, Inspire Campaigns are month-long events where we encourage ideas along a specific theme relevant to Wikimedia projects. The goal is to promote and elevate ideas that have been developed by participants that address that theme, and turn them into action. One way of doing so is through the use of the grant programs that the Wikimedia Foundation offers. These defined ideas can also be brought back to local projects for discussion, improvement, and consensus-building, and implementation. In general, IdeaLab and these campaigns are a good opportunity for others to gauge your ideas, for you to express your interests and concerns in others' ideas, build teams, and to revise ideas as needed.
Can ideas be directly implemented through discussion on the idea page?
[edit]It depends on the idea. Ideas cannot be directly implemented if it proposes a change in a Wikimedia project's policies or guidelines, or if there is a need for funding. To implement an idea, it usually must be brought to an appropriate place on your local Wikimedia project community, such as the Village Pump on English Wikipedia or the Café on Spanish Wikipedia.
Will grant proposals related to this Inspire campaign receive preference during review?
[edit]No. Ideas created through the Inspire Campaign will be submitted through the same grant channels as all other proposals. They will be reviewed using the same criteria as proposals not associated with this Inspire campaign.
