Overview

[edit]
1. In order to support community review, please provide a brief description of your organization's work in the upcoming funding period.

For the past several years Wikimedia Armenia defines its goals and organizes its activities within the framework of several programs: Quality Content, Community Empowerment, Education, and Organizational Development. All these programs are interconnected and each of them supports the development of the other.

We have made some changes to overall organization approach of the activities carried out by WMAM. Most importantly, we made distinctions between the work done by the staff and by the community. Previously, all educational programs were organized and carried out exclusively by the staff. Now the staff is only involved in organizing activities, meanwhile, the implementation is left to the community. This enables us to engage the community more in the activities of WMAM, to make them more responsible and to nurture the feeling in them that they are the owners of the Wikimedia ideology and movement.

The Armenian wiki community was created from scratch; there were just a few editors in the beginning but due to all the offline activities we were able to engage new people and create a community. Thus, offline activities are vital for the existence and productive operation of our wiki community. Besides that, offline WikiCamps and other events provide a platform where people, especially the youth and teens, interact with each other and keep in touch which is important for the continuous existence of the Armenian wiki community. At the same time, Armenia has small population size and people are not very informed about the capabilities and opportunities provided by Wikimedia projects. Thus, we have to put a lot of effort to introduce to the public the work we are doing which is more tangible due to offline activities.

Wikimedia Armenia is planning to continue the main activities and events included in each program direction, at the same time, we intend to initiate new ones. The goals of the Quality Content program is to develop the quality and quantity of articles on Armenian Wikipedia. Besides that we intend to engage more professional people and specialists of different fields in the development of the quality content in order to provide more trustworthy and authentic content.

The purpose of the Community Empowerment is to engage the community in the activities of WMAM. Most importantly, we want to make the community members more mature due to direct participation in the ongoing processes of the organization so that they can deeply understand the aims of the movement and become more proactive.

The objectives of the Education program are twofold: firstly, it provides platform for self-education both for teachers, students and everyone. Secondly, due to the activities within the Education program we create educational materials which are up-to-date and available for everyone.

Finally, one of the goals of the Organizational Development program is to expand the outreach and promote Armenian Wikipedia, the idea of free education and the Wikimedia movement.

All these programs are deeply interrelated in a sense that by engaging new and knowledgeable people in the community, we tend to develop the quality content and vice versa. Moreover, working with educational institutions and centers enables us to expand the scope of our Wiki community and enhance the content of articles on Wikipedia. For instance, WikiCamps are considered to be an encouraging project for WikiClubs. The latter in their turn bring new participants to WikiCamps. As the collaboration with universities increased, we included new WikiCamps specifically for the youth in our plans.

Programmatic directions:

Quality Content: In the upcoming period WMAM will concentrate all its efforts in order to develop the quality and quantity of articles on Wikipedia. We will continue some of the programs that we have started previously - Wiki Loves Science meetings, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Earth, "Wikiteam 1+3", thematic edit-a-thons, collaborations with GLAM institutions. We will also start new projects - "A Region per Month", collaboration with scientific institutions, Armenia in foreign language Wikipedias.

Community: During this and previous reporting period WMAM put an emphasis on empowering the community. We will continue to develop this programmatic direction to bring the community's engagement to the highest level. We will resume to organize community meetup-discussions to hear their ideas and needs and to inform them about the ongoing processes in organization and the Wikimedia movement. Within the framework of this program we initiated a new project - during some of the Saturday workshops we will organize meetings for the community with various specialists of different fields in order to develop the capacities and capabilities of our community.
Education: Education is one of the major programmatic directions of WMAM and it will continue to have its important place in the new APG. Taking our previous success into account, we will continue to cooperate with educational institutions and to host interns in our office. The main activities within the framework of this program are Wikipedia courses for teachers, Wikipedia courses for students, WikiClub activities, WikiCamps. This year we will try to develop a plan for the Wikipedia courses so that more teachers continue to contribute to Wikipedia after the courses end. Due to "Wikipedia courses for teachers", the demand for WikiClubs has increased, thus, we will

  • Wikimedia Armenia organizes discussions, consultations with the wiki community and listens to their suggestions when compiling its annual plan. The experience of previous years is studied in order to be clear which projects are effective. The wiki community appreciated the public events, which allow editors to socialize, make friends, and thus become more enthusiastic about editing and other wiki-related work.

5. Please provide a link to your organization's strategic plan, and a link to your separate annual plans for the current and upcoming funding periods if you have them.

  Quality Content

Projects to be continued

[edit]
Wiki Loves Science
Scientific meetings and edit-a-thons have a very positive effect on the enlargement of the wiki community and on the improvement of the quality of the Armenian Wikipedia. They are attended by students and experienced professionals, some of whom are already experienced editors. Such events are also a good opportunity to discuss the activities of Wikimedia Armenia, the wiki community, and to hear important suggestions. Taking into account the experience of previous years, it was decided to turn 2 out of the 4 scientific gatherings into a meeting-scientific edit-a-thon and the other 2 into a scientific edit-a-thon in 2021. We should get relevant literature for creating articles.

A - 2 Wiki Loves Science edit-a-thon-gatherings

"WikiTeam 1+3" and Edit-a-thons
One of the main goals of Wikimedia Armenia is the qualitative and quantitative development of Armenian-language wiki projects, including the Armenian Wikipedia. We plan to hold a number of edit-a-thons, which will attract editors with different interests. For fans of teamwork, we will organize 4 “Wikiteam 1+3” edit-a-thon-contests. This contest is about creating and improving articles together with groups of 4 people; these contests last 20-30 days each. During the year we will organize 4 thematic edit-a-thons, engaging specialists in different fields. The goal is to create professional and thematic articles.

A - 4 "Wikiteam 1+3" contests
B - 4 thematic edit-a-thons

Collaboration with GLAM institutions
For the past several years Wikimedia Armenia collaborated with various GLAM institutions and had outstanding results. So continuing the success of such collaborations we plan cooperate with 3 GLAM institutions in 2021. One of this institutions will be the National Archive of Armenia which has abundant resources and data which can be scanned and preserved. Other GLAM institutions will be museums. The collaboration will involve digitizing materials, collecting resources, making them available on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, WikiData, and WikiSource.

A - collaboration with 3 GLAM institutions

Wiki Loves Monuments
Through the project, thousands of monuments in Armenia are photographed. Representatives of the wiki community, as well as professional photographers, are enthusiastically participating in the project, thus enriching Wikimedia Commons with thousands of valuable photos. Their activity is also evident by the fact that Armenia has always been in the top three with the number of photos uploaded (this year - 20,217). We provide this result through group trips to various monuments. We create small groups, send them to places where the monuments are less covered and publicized, thus, they are less photographed. This contest also helps the engagement of the members of wiki community, it also connects the community members making them a solid system.

A- 13 group trips

Wiki Loves Earth
Armenia is famous for its rich and diverse fauna and flora, about which little information is available in wiki projects. “Wiki Loves Earth” project provides a wonderful opportunity to photograph the rich flora and fauna, upload them on Wikimedia Commons. It is also a stimulus for creating and improving articles about nature. Within the framework of the project, in 2020 we cooperated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which will continue in 2021. This project contributes to two purpose: firstly, it provides quality content regarding flora and fauna of Armenia, secondly, it contributes to Wikicommons by adding the number of photos of unique and endemic nature of Armenia.

A - 1 group trip

New projects

[edit]
"A Region per Month"
“A Region per Month” is a novelty which was suggested by one of our active community members. The Republic of Armenia has 10 regions and the capital city - Yerevan. Overall, these regions are covered very poorly in Wikimedia projects. So the purpose of the project is to enhance the information about towns, cities, geographic and cultural buildings on Wikipedia, to upload photos to Wikimedia Commons. Each month of the year will be dedicated to one of the regions of Armenia, during which the editors will create and improve articles about the region, as well as enrich other wiki projects with materials related to that region.

A - 12 edit-a-thons dedicated to 10 regions, capital city of the RA and the Republic of Artsakh

Collaboration with scientific institutions
There are many institutes and centers in the territory of Armenia, which are deeply engaged in science (for example, physics, cosmology, etc.) and have huge materials in their archives. These rich information can be used to create improve quality of the articles on Armenian Wikipedia, besides that the materials collected during the visits to these institutions will contribute to WikiCommons, Wikisource and Wikidata.

A - collaborations with 3 scientific institutions

  Community

Activities

[edit]
Community meetup-discussion
In order to achieve its goals of having mature wiki community which is highly engaged in Wikimedia movement, WMAM will continue to organize community meetup-discussion. Previously, during community meetups, members spent two days editing Wikipedia. However, during in 2019-20, we dramatically changed the format of the meetings making them meetup-discussion. The purpose of this activity is to tell the community about the ongoing processes in the Wikimedia movement, the strategy and WMAM's future plans, and to hear their suggestions and ideas what can be improved or developed. Dur to these meetup-discussion we understand the needs of our community, what they would like to do or what they are interested in. Besides that, the community will become more knowledgeable and well-informed about the movement they are part of.

A - 2 Community meetup-discussions

Capacity building
For many years, Wikimedia Armenia has been organizing workshops every Saturday in the organization's office. Due to the COVID-19 the format of public meetings has changed and became online. It is planned to continue Saturday workshops in 2021 with an offline format. Taking into account the suggestions of the editors and our research, we decided to organize meetings-lectures with specialists during Saturday workshops, which will increase the knowledge of the editors and the quality of the edited articles. Besides editing workshops on Saturdays, the editors will have the chance to meet specialists in different fields, e.g. historians, linguists, etc. These meetings will enhance the capacities of our community members making them more competent and confident while creating content.

A - 12 meetings with specialists

Saturday workshops
Each Saturday an active participant of Wiki community chooses a topic to introduce to the beginners or experienced editors. The purpose of Saturday workshops has changed within this year. Previously, people gathered at the office of Wikimedia Armenia and spend time editing Wikipedia. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we changed the format of workshops making them online during which beginners and experienced editors had separate sessions to learn Wikipedia and to improve their knowledge. Saturday workshops enables us to involve new people into the movement, on one hand, and on the other hand, enhance the capabilities of our community.

A - 40 Saturday workshops

  Education

Activities

[edit]

Wikipedia courses for teachers Wikipedia course for teachers]]For 6 years Wikimedia Armenia has been organizing Wikipedia courses and seminars for teachers from regions and Yerevan. Teachers have always been one of the most target groups of WMAM for several reasons. First of all, we want to give teachers a platform for self-development so that they can enhance their knowledge of computers, languages through editing Wikipedia. Secondly, they are the people who communicate and teach students. Thus, the influence of the wiki movement has a chain effect and transfers from us to teachers and from them to students. One of the examples of interconnectedness of our projects can be seen here. The successful outcome of teachers' courses enables us to open new WikiClubs in those schools which have already prepared and experienced teacher-editor.

Within the framework of Wikipedia courses, we are developing a group of Wiki trainers through seminars for trainers during which they deepen their knowledge about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Due to these seminars, our trainers also learn how to teach the participants of courses. Overall, the idea of Wiki trainers is to increase the number of very experienced editors in our community who are also capable of teaching others.

During the pandemic, we had to change the format of the courses from offline to online. It became clear that online Wikipedia courses had several advantages: one of them is that due to the online format a lot more teachers were given a chance to participate. This year we organized two online Wikipedia courses and overall had 300 participants meanwhile previously the offline Wikiseminars were designed only for 50 people. Moreover, sometimes it was not convenient for teachers from distant settlements to take part in the courses. However, due to online ones people from different regions of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh were welcomed to be a part of the courses. Based on the outcome, we have decided that in 2021 we will organize two online Wikipedia courses for teachers.

A - 2 online Wikipedia courses for teachers from regions, Yerevan and Artsakh

B - 250 teachers from regions

Collaboration with universities
Working with educational institutions is one of the most important projects of Wikimedia Armenia. Previously we had successful collaborations with several universities and faculties. University students do their internship in our office and contribute to Wikipedia developing their language skills and translation skills. During one of the collaborations, the students created great amount of quality content. Thus, we have decided that we will continue and will try to bring the cooperation with universities to a new level. During 2021 we are going to organize Wikipedia courses for 2 universities and provide their students an opportunity of internship in the office of Wikimedia Armenia.

A - collaborations with 2 universities

B - 40 interns

WikiCamps

WikiCamps are one of the most successful and large-scale projects of Wikimedia Armenia, which are aimed at not only promoting the Wikimedia movement, but also strengthening our wiki community, engaging new people, developing the scientific and educational mindset of the participants, and, of course, the quality development of wiki projects.

They are designed for different age groups; there are camps for both teenagers and students: 9-14, 15-18, 19-35. Representatives of the wiki community are looking forward to these events; several months earlier they start preparing for the camps.

In the upcoming funding period, we are going to organize 5 WikiCamps - 4 school and 1 university students camp (1 in summer, 1 in spring, 2 in summer, and 1 in fall).

During the previous funding period we worked on involving and diversifying the components of the camp which will include both educational and cultural aspects. We had a chance to work with various state institutions and we will continue this practice. We also plan to shoot videos during the camps to expand the outreach of Wikimedia Movement and to inspire and engage new people to the camps and Wikimedia Movement.

A - 5 WikiCamps

WikiClubs

Wikiclubs are Wikimedia Armenia’s representatives in different cities and villages of Armenia. Through their activities, they contribute to the successful implementation of our programs and projects, the development of wiki projects, and the expansion of the Wikimedia Movement. In fact, they are important scientific and educational centers, where children and young people are engaged in self-education.

Taking into account the years of experience and the effectiveness of clubs in the activities of Wikimedia Armenia, there is a need to expand their network. Thanks to Wikipedia courses, we already have experienced editors who can coordinate new WikiClubs, contribute to the realization of our ideas and goals. Thus, in 2021 we are planning to open 5 new WikiClubs in the regions as we have already designated some outstanding teacher-editors who are willing and capable of coordinating a WikiClub.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the format of the clubs’ work has undergone some changes. However, now as the situation has become somewhat better, they resumed their offline activities. They will continue the offline activities in 2021 in case the situation has not become even worse.
