John-Olov Janson is Professor of Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy at Göteborg University in Sweden. Professor Jansson got his MD and PhD at Sahlgrenska Academy. He spent two years as a postdoc in the US and one year on sabbatical leave in Cambridge, UK. Professor Jansson published much early work on the regulation and physiological importance of the pulsatile growth hormone (GH) secretion. Ha was also first to show evidence that the dwarf phenotype of the “little” mouse strain is due to a defective GH releasing hormone (GHRH) receptor. Later he has been studying the interactions between immune function and metabolism, especially interleukin-6 (IL-6) in relation to obesity. Professor Jansson was first to show that endogenous IL-6 in the brain suppresses obesity. Later work imply that IL-6 in the brain may mediate the anti-obesity and anorectic effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Prof Jansson has published about 160 articles and has been cited about 36 000 times (Google Scholar)
In 2018, Professor Jansson and Professor Claes Ohlsson at Sahlgrenska Academy showed evidence that there is a homeostatic regulation of body weight, the so called gravitostat.
