About the Event
[edit]Background
[edit]You’re invited to take part in a new Wikimedia event linked to International Museum Day (18 May) and Global Accessibility Awareness Day (19 May). It’s a week-long program dedicated to describing images to make them more accessible and discoverable, in all languages. We’re programming a global mix of conversations, demonstrations, and editing events to highlight image description as a creative task that can advance social justice goals.
Objectives
[edit]- Editors reflect on how they select and interpret images in different contexts.
- Organizers understand image description as a creative task that can advance social justice goals.
- More images can be discovered and understood in multiple languages.
Activities
[edit]The program will be community-led but we’re already expecting demonstrations of the new image-led experiences being developed by the Wikimedia Foundation’s product teams; introductions to image description tools like OpenRefine, ISA, and Depictor; and a panel about the limits of automated image description. We’re also hoping to have a playful introduction to Alt Text as Poetry by artists Shannon Finnegan and Bojana Coklyat.
