Doteli Wikipedia Questionnaire

1. Can you tell us about your association with this incubator project? - The commencement of the Doteli wiki started a year back. Simultaneously, i was also involved in this project a year back.

2. What do you think is the additional scope of contributors for Doteli? - Of course there is the dire need of other contributors for the further enhancement of the Doteli.

3. Although Doteli is also spoken in India, your profile as well as the profiles of some other users seem to indicate the contributions mostly by Nepali people. How would you deal with that i.e. encouraging more participation for Doteli Wikipedia, especially from Indian Doteli speakers? - To be specific, this language is used in the far-western part of Nepal. However, this is also spoken in northern part of the India specially in Kumau. The language spoken in Kumau is very similar to Doteli language. To encourage the people to contribute in the Doteli wiki, i think it would be better to consult the personnels who possess a good knowledge in Doteli language and are involved in different education institutions. So far, i came to know Prof. Dr. Shekhar Pathak, who possess a good knowledge in Doteli and currently working in the Kumau university. He is the chief editor of ‘Pahad’ paper. I think with the help of Mr. Pathak i can encourage the Doteli speakers of Indian for contributing in Doteli wiki.

4. In one of my blogs (http://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/06/09/samskrita-bharati-and-sanskrit-wikipedia-the-journey-ahead) I discussed the proactive approach of Samkrita Bharathi in promoting Sanskrit. Do you think there can possibly be a tie-up with some institution for Doteli? - Of course, we can tie-up with different institution and organizations for further improvement and to preserve the language. For example, we can negotiate with locally established FM’s, clubs, education institutions and different NGO’s.

5. What is the level of support for Doteli in your country (i.e. school-level education/ university level education)? If so, what are the prominent education centres for the language? - There is a provision of providing education in mother tongue up to primary level in the Interim constitution of Nepal, 2063. This shows the government has been emphasising the use of mother tongue(i.e. Doteli).

6. Does Doteli have some sort of official status in Nepal? - If you see clear cut provision of using Doteli language in the offices, it is difficult to find . But in the local level it has been used frequently.

7. Does the existence of distinct dialects create some sort of impediment in the development of the language Wikipedia? - If you on analyzing each and every thing of the language it may create impediment. But in reality, different dialects of the same language may not cause serious problems in understandings and developing the wiki.

8. It is indeed satisfactory that the no. of articles in project is increasing. But the average is too small - not beyond one or two lines in most cases. How do you propose the expansion of the stubs to satisfactory levels? - I do agree with that there are some articles which expands only two or three lines. This doesn’t mean that they are factual article rather they are informative in nature. therefore, they are somehow short and did not contain the information as expected by the readers. I do hope that with the help of well wishers and contributors current situation can be improved in the days to come.

9. Tell us about themes of most common articles so far. - Mainly, we have been working/writing to preserve and foster the language; along with this our aim is to preserve our culture, way of living and other heritage too.

10. What are the online sources available helpful to editors (dictionaries, language encyclopedias, old text, etc). Can you give a few examples? - We have a dictionary in Doteli language besides this some papers in Doteli language such as; ‘Chinari’, ‘Gugulti’, ‘Annikophako’, ‘Passhimeli raibar’ & ‘Om Sri’ etc. Which are helpful to editors.

11. Has there been any drive for Doteli Wikipedia - outreach events, informal meetings, online blogs, social media pages/ groups / posts etc? If so, what has been the impact? - We do some informal meetings. We are going to organize outreach events in near future(now discussion is going on). 12. Apart from Wikipedia, what are Wiki projects do you feel are in the offing for Doteli - Wikisource, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, etc? - In the present time our goal is to bring out Doteli(dty) wiki from incubator. In future we can do more for this language.

14. Could you share any and all ideas - small or big, successful & not-so-successful - that you think can help drive Doteli and other language projects, especially those in incubator? - https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/dty This is the one year effort for doteli language. In the starting phase i am very curious. Meanwhile i have do some telephone talk, online chat to the people who belongs to Doteli language spoken region. I have got few people who wants to contribute in the doteli language. But, i am hopeful to bring out the doteli wiki from incubator and to increase the active contributor in this wiki. As you describe above, outreach events, informal meetings, education programme, online blog, social media are helpful to drive this project.

I would like to elaborate in Doteli Wikipedia Questionnaire no. 4 & no. 9 No. 4:- As your gave the example of "Samkrita Bharathi" in promoting the Sanskrit. Like this way we have many FM radios in that region. Many of them are playing active role to promoting Doteli language, culture, heritage, festivals. Different radio programmers broadcasting from these FMs. Among them Saugat FM, Radio Kalapani, Naya Nepal FM, Dinesh FM, Radio Dhangadhi, Amargadhi FM, Sudur Aawaj FM, Shuklaphata FM, Shansher FM & Nagarik FM plays key role.

No.9:- There are many festivals only celebrates in that particular region(i. e. far-western Nepal). These are Bisu praba, Olke sankranti, Budhi polne praba, Gaura praba, Maghesankranti etc. and there are many tourism place as well as holy place also. Some of them mount Api, Shaipal, Khaptad, Badimalika, Ramaroshan lake, Ghodaghodi lake, Patal bhumeshwor, Shuklaphata wildlife etc. Our aim to preserve our culture, way of living, heritage & nooks & corner of society.
