Topical list-building

[edit]

Topical list-building strategies allow contributors to address specific content knowledge gaps by creating, sharing, and maintaining lists of relevant information. Lists may be composed of red links, existing articles, references, or something else.

Define your list

[edit]

To determine the focus of the list, it is important to first identify the information need - the knowledge gap the list will address. Use these questions as a guide when determining this need.

  • What is the topical scope?
  • What is the knowledge gap the list aims to address?
  • What do you hope to achieve with the list? (# of articles, pageviews, behavioral change, translations, etc.)
  • Where do you regularly turn for verifiable, reliable content related to the to (either on- or off-Wiki)?
  • What obstacles do you face when locating and/or verifying content?

List-building Tools

[edit]

A number of tools exist to support topical list-building efforts. The tools you'll use will largely depend on the knowledge gap and type of list needed.

Tool Keywords Description When should I use it? Get started
List-building Tool [1] similarity, relationships This tool allows one to build a list of related articles to a 'seed' based on various models. Results include article, Wikidata item, description, and why similar to the 'seed'. A list of 'Potential WikiProjects' is also generated. Use this tool to quickly create a list of articles (by language) that are related to a general topic ('seed'). This tool is also helpful to see similar WikiProjects. Enter the language code, title, and number of results
Listeria [2] data analysis, translations, automatic updates Listeria is a bot that generates and updates lists on Wikipedia, based on Wikidata queries. Use this tool to have a Wikidata-generated list or a list that will be automatically updated across languages. Listeria may be a simpler entry to Wikidata when compared to creating SPARQL queries with the Wikidata Query Service (below). Listeria Bot[3], Wikidata List[4], Dynamic Wikidata Lists[5]
Pageviews Analysis [6] similarity, relationships, popularity, traffic Pageviews Analysis is a suite of tools to analyze page view and unique device statistics for Wikimedia Foundation wikis. There are eight tools in the suite, Pageviews, Langviews, Topviews, Siteviews, Massviews, Redirect Views, Userviews and Mediaviews. This suite of tools can be used to genreate, analyze, and filter statistics for a variety of page view types. Use the tools to compare views across projects, articles, and languages. PetScan [7] similarity, relationships, exclusions PetScan is a tool that allows users to extract data, generate lists of Wikipedia (and related projects) pages or Wikidata items that match certain criteria, and extract and analyze data from Wikimedia projects. Use the tool to query pages within categories, with specific templates, or that link from/to other specific pages. PetScan can also be used to combine temporary lists into new ones. Outputs (lists) can be in the form of a web page, wiki, etc., and can be further filtered or ranked with a list of missing topics ('redlinks'). Petscan Manual
Popular Pages Bot [8] popularity The Popular pages bot project aims to help WikiProject contributors gain deeper understanding about which article pages are popular among readers. The bot posts monthly updates of the most read pages within a WikiProject for the previous calendar month, the pageviews, the article's assessment and its importance. Use this tool to view popular pages related to a specific WikiProject. While not specifically geared towards list-building, the bot can be useful as a report on which article pages within a project have gained the most traction. English Wikipedia WikiProjects can sign-up [9] to include this bot on project pages.
What Links Here [10] similarity, exclusions, popularity In the toolbox of every article page there is a link labeled 'What links here' which lists the pages on the same site linking to either that page, the pages in all namespaces, or in a specified one. Use this link to quickly see relationships between related articles/topics. Article pages with a relative high number of links may provide a rough indication of popularity. Importantly, redlinked articles with existing articles linking to it may indicate that the nonexistent article deserves creation. What links here help[11]; Click "what links here" and explore
WikiData Query Service [12] data analysis, gaps, similarity The Wikidata Query Service allows one to extract specific information from Wikidata using the query language SPARQL. This enables researchers, developers, and anyone interested to explore and analyze the vast amount of structured data within Wikidata in a flexible and efficient manner. Use this tool to find specific data within the Wikidata knowledge base, automate data extraction, and analyze data. Use this data to identify and resolve knowledge gaps. SPARQL Query Help[13]; Wikidata Query Service User Manual[14]; Wikidata Query Builder [15]
Wikipedia Library [16] references The Wikipedia Library allows active editors to access a wide range of collections of paywalled reliable sources for free! Once approved as a user, use this tool to locate credible sources for references. Access limited to approved users
WikiNav [17] popularity, traffic This tool provides insights into how readers of Wikipedia explore the content when learning about a given topic. Resulting chart visualizes incoming and outgoing traffic, to and from the selected article. Use this tool to see a visualization of incoming and outgoing traffic for a specified article. Results allow you to analyze sources of traffic and make comparisons over time and across languages. Select the language (e.g. English Wikipedia) and enter a search term
Wikipedia 1.0 Server [18] quality, importance The Wikipedia WP 1.0 Engine is a tool largely concerned with aggregating ratings for various WikiProjects. Use this tool to generate a summary table for a project with articles ranked by quality and importance. This tool may also be useful for WikiProject organizers who would like to identify lower-quality articles worthy of improvement. DoWikipedia 1.0 Server cumentation [19]; Enter the WikiProject name
