Education and Human Rights Program

Background

The education and human rights program of Wikimedia Argentina has a local and regional scope and responds to all the projects and activities that we carry out with educators, students, human rights organizations and established and emerging Wikimedia organizations at the regional level. It aims to train, support and promote the use of Wikimedia projects in educational contexts; to create locally relevant and under represented knowledge to guarantee a diverse and equitable representation of the Global South in the Wikimedia projects; and to mentor and develop educational and Human Rights projects at the regional level by collaborating with the Latin American and Caribbean chapters of the Wikimedia movement.

Although 2020 has been a very complex year, we have been able to expand and reach our goals and respond with innovative projects to the critical state of education in Argentina.

During 2021 we will work to adapt, expand and design suitable proposals to strengthen the development, growth and sustainability of education and human rights communities at a local and regional level, as well as to generate and share learnings in the Wikimedia movement.

Context

To design this planning we carried out a context assessment, which can be found here. This analysis helped us establish the following forecasts that will define our work in 2021:

  • The implementation of the program in both online and offline formats will continue throughout 2021. We will generate a flexible and contextualized program, with projects that can easily adapt to the challenges and opportunities of a very unequal context.
  • The needs of educators to incorporate new digital skills and strengthen their capabilities will remain stable, as they are able to adapt their curricula to a scenario that remains very uncertain.
  • Face-to-face activities may be a possibility in Argentina but are still difficult to happen at a regional level in a short term; strengthening, supporting and mentoring online will remain fundamental to boost the development, growth and sustainability of communities in matters of education and Human Rights.

Program 2021

According to the context and based on our 3 lines of work, we defined the following goals and activities for 2021:

Program's Alignment with 2030 strategy

The Education & Human Rights Program is aligned with recommendations 1, 3 and 6 in the follow ways:

  • Increase the Sustainability of Our Movement (1)We will continue working to distribute technical, training and financial resources according to the needs of cultural communities, with the aim of supporting the development of cultural communities in LATAM, to expand and diversify the movement with new people. This is also a work in line with recommendation 4.
  • Provide for Safety and Inclusion (3)One of our main new lines of work is to develop the local and regional capacity for training on digital rights and safety. We will work to contribute and develop safer communities in the region, both for the present as well as for the future.
  • Invest in Skills and Leadership Development (6) One of the program’s main priorities for 2021 is identifiying local and regional needs to develop spaces for training and knowledge transfer, mentoring programs and technological infrastructure for learning.

Also, we will promote the following cross-cutting line:

  • Manage internal knowledge (7): We would like the movement to be learning-oriented, with skill development and knowledge transfer as fundamental pillars. From the Education Program, we will promote this transformation by designing localized and contextualized proposals, both locally and regionally, making them accessible for everyone.

Culture & Open Knowledge Program

Background

The Culture and Open knowledge program includes all the activities we carry out with archives, museums, cultural institutions, international and governmental organizations at the local level aiming to release cultural heritage and promote the incorporation of open access and digitizing policies within cultural communities to improve the diversity of the Wikimedia projects.

However and due to the context, the program has been significantly redefined during 2020. This, has resulted in the setting new priorities as to foster our training and mentoring proposals; to strengthen our advocacy work on open access and digitizing policies or to guarantee that knowledge is accessible in an equitable manner in Argentina, that have allow us to become a strong, meaningful and trusted partner for cultural institutions from Argentina.

With the aim of developing these priorities further, during 2021 we will work to increase the representativeness of Argentine culture in the Wikimedia projects, create new learning, mentoring and cooperation opportunities, and build a cultural network to bring more diversity to the Wikimedia Movement.

Context

To design this planning we carried out a context assessment, which can be found here. This analysis helped us establish the following forecasts that will define our work in 2021:

  • The needs to incorporate new skills, knowledge and resources will remain fundamental, as cultural institutions will continue to prioritize their digital and online strategy next year.
  • Cultural institutions will work to make their collections accessible, so strengthening mentorship and advocate for open access policies and digitizing projects will continue be a priority.
  • Budgets will not increase during 2021; in a context of limited resources, similar challenges and common needs, creating networks of cooperation and support is a key to guarantee the sustainability, resilience and growth of cultural institutions and communities.

Cooperation & Inclusion Program

Background and context

Our Diverse Communities program has undergone important changes in 2020 that have translated into the reformulation of the program to Cooperation and Inclusion (of communities) program, for the following reasons:

  • to help support, expand and diversify our local community: long term editors, new editors, current and future volunteers and partners.
  • to help advance regional communities by creating with and for them new projects, networks of support and opportunities for collaboration.
  • to help building a more inclusive Wikimedia Movement by promoting new cooperation opportunities.

Although due to the context we faced important challenges that have reduced time of a portion of our community, this new approach has allowed us to train, mentor and support our local community accordingly, create locally relevant content, strengthen our outreach, involve more women in our activities and improve our collaboration at the regional level.

With the aim of developing these priorities further, during 2021 we will adapt and create new projects to expand, diversify and build a more inclusive local community, support the growth and sustainability of current and future regional communities and create new opportunities to collaborate and learn within the Wikimedia Movement.

Context

To design this planning we carried out a context assessment, which can be found here. This analysis helped us establish the following forecasts that will define our work in 2021:

  • In a context of (possible) lock-down, where the media and the Internet are key to maintaining contact with the outside world, creating and making accessible verifiable, reliable and locally relevant information to citizens becomes a priority.
  • Most volunteers are connected to the Internet all day and need to redefine their spaces for resting. In this context, creating proposals that favor learning, leisure and socialization are critical, especially for women who have been directly affected by this "new normality" that has highlighted gender inequalities in Argentina.
  • Although we can not meet face to face, working online erases distances and generates new possibilities of articulation, cooperation and assistance among communities at all levels.

Program 2021

According to the context and based on our 3 lines of work, we defined the following goals and activities for 2021:

Objectives & activities 2021

Goal Activities 2021 Primary Audience
Promote Wikimedia projects as tools for access to updated and locally relevant information.
  • Establish long-term, sustainable partnerships with a diverse range of organizations, communities and experts to create, review, and update relevant information for society.
  • (New) Establish the Wikimedia projects as a tool to promote right of information. We will carry out a research on content gaps to identify content that is relevant for the citizenry in Argentina. This project will also help us develop meaningful projects and partnerships to create content, along local editors. It also aims to strengthen our commitment to the SDG goals.
  • Civil society organizations. Special focus on SDG
  • Communities of experts
  • New and long-term editors
Promote new learning and networking opportunities to foster the development of a diverse and inclusive local community committed to building a more equitable Wikimedia movement.
  • We will continue developing training proposals and support local projects to empower current and future local leaders, involve new editors, and promote our community as a space for learning, socialization and belonging.
  • Strengthen our mentoring program to favor the inclusion and retention of new editors and volunteers as part of our local community, involving our long-term members as mentors
  • (New) Continue working to deconstruct the gender roles and stereotypes that currently exist in our local community. Among other activities, we will design a new training and skills development program in Argentina, to address the challenges of the Wikimedia movement and projects, regarding gender and diversity. We aim to get our local community more committed to an inclusive movement and foster the inclusion and equal representation and participation of more women and people of other identities as editors and community members.
  • (New) Carry out an analysis on how people use and participate in Wikipedia. We will focus mainly in newcomers' experiences, to identify the barriers they face that hinder the growth, diversity and renewal of our local community.
  • Women, other gender identities and underrepresented communities
  • Local community, leaders and volunteers
  • Newcomers
  • New and historical Wikimedia editors
Promote the development of new spaces of cooperation, collaboration and alliances to favor the growth of communities in the Wikimedia Movement
  • Continue cooperating and collaborating with the region in a comprehensive way (support, mentoring, resources and projects) and also regarding the implementation of the strategy 2030. (New) In this sense, we will not only focus on strengthening regional capacity -for which we will allocate specific resources and grants-, but to improve the management of internal knowledge at a regional scale to efficiently promote learning transfer and resources. For it, we will expand the community resources website with a description/database of regional projects and fundraising opportunities, two needs detected during 2020.
  • (New) Promote the development of a Wikimedia Movement that enhances cooperation and learning. We will develop a global initiative for and with organizations and communities from the Wikimedia Movement, which will allow us -among other things- to identify our peers, find mentors and learn about projects. In the presence of an uncertain context, in which it is still not possible to meet face-to-face, it is essential to build new cooperation strategies to continue strengthening communities at a global scale.
  • Regional Wikimedia communities
  • Global Wikimedia Communities
