Marathi language programs with State Government
[edit]CIS-A2K has collaborated with Rajya Marathi Vikas Sanstha of Govt.of Maharashtra for Wikipedia Workshops during Marathi Fortnight - 1st to 15th Jan 2018. The programs continued till Marathi Bhasha Day on 27th Feb. We have already built partnerships with all these educational institutions before. We have selected active institutions. CIS-A2K is acting as technical resource agency for the workshop.
- Activity
- Learning
The geographical expansion in primarily rural districts is necessary as they require knowledge in local language. With the support from State government, it is easier to connect with good university departments and active educational institutes. Taking advantage of atmosphere created during language day and month proved fruitful.
- Impact
RMVS is CIS-A2K’s important institutional partner for the last two years. Many activities are being conducted collaboratively. These include Wikipedia edit-a-thons, Capacity building workshops for active editors, Unicode & Open source promotion workshops and Content donation drives. They have integrated all these activities into their annual program on ‘Language and Internet’.
Communities of interest
[edit]We have established rapport with different organizations working in various sectors. The vision is to build the quality content in specific areas in long term. The areas include water, rivers, science, mathematics, law, appropriate technology and rural development. The objective is to build communities of interest in these sectors.
- Activities
Thematic workshops with Jalbiradari, Jeevit nadi, Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan, Sandarbh Society, Jnana Prabodhini, Vigyan Ashram, Jeevan Jyoti Women Empowerment centre were conducted. In these workshops extensive discussions on category tree, databases, similar like-minded groups, resource persons and reference literature available were conducted.
- Learning
Pilot of one concept is to be developed with group of experts in specific areas. Networking with organisations at grass-root as well as policy level is crucial to create integrated structure on the theme.
- Impact
The groups on science, mathematics, rural culture, appropriate technologies, water issues, biodiversity and women empowerment have been identified and trained in Wikimedia projects. Regular activities have been initiated by these groups and we are only facilitating.
- Followup
Capacity building sessions for these groups are planned with more frequency. These are online as well as offline. We shall effectively use social media also for more networking.

Gender gap
[edit]CIS-A2K focused on bridging gender gap in Marathi Wikimedia projects. To achieve this, partnerships developed with two organisations working on Technology & Women Empowerment. These are Vigyan Ashram and Jeevan Jyoti Women Empowerment Centre run by Jnana Prabodhini. The projects on Wikipedia, Commons and Wikisource were implemented. Active editors on marathi wiki were provided with continuous inputs for quality improvement and policy making.
- Activity
- Impact
- Continuous content development and skill building programs are now conducted by Team of trainers at Vigyan Ashram
- During this activity 15 women editors actively worked to develop thematic content on birds, rural culture and villages
- Wikisource & Commons activity by Vigyan Ashram resulted into -- books on Commons and OCR of --- books on WS
- 6 Very active women editors on WP
- Active participation in TTT, Mini TTT and other programs
- Followup
The involvement of larger community working in research and extension on gender issues is in progress. We have reached out to 5 such organisations through orientation sessions.
Wikisource Internship
[edit]With the initiative of community and institution, Wikisource Internship Program at Garware College of Commerce, Pune was completed. CIS-A2K is acting as facilitator. The students are actively involved in proof-reading of old marathi book written by famous economist G.C.Bhate in 1910.
- Learning
The books related to academic course are preferred by the students for proof reading. They know the concepts well in their language while reading with concentration. The styles related edits are difficult in short period.
- Impact
The faculty was convinced about the concept of combining the activity with course work. One book was completed by the students collectively. The program was conducted on language day around this concept.
- Followup
The internship pattern will be implemented for every batch. The concept is being shared with other institutions also.
Telugu
[edit]- Activity
“ | Village pages of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States of India have been a concern for Telugu Wikipedia for a long time. Thousands of pages have remained stubs since their creation, more than a decade ago.The re-organisation of the state, Districts and sub districts added to the issues. A2K community advocate took initiative to address these issues by collecting data from the Census of India and adding that content to these pages. He created a project for this and drawn up a plan to improve these pages. Some users actively participated in the project and added content to these pages. He coordinated the efforts and helped project to progress towards the set objectives.Almost 80% of these pages have been improved and the work is still going on-User:Chaduvari

A2K participated in Conceptualization, Co-organization and support of Telugu Village articles project. We majorly took the role of growing ideas into concept and shape, helped community to visualize how data can turn into knowledge and co-ordination task between one of the coordinator and participants. Conducted workshops, meetups and regular calls to actualize the work. A2K continued to provide resources to Community members per request and need. As Telangana Cultural department which planned to fund and host a physical library for Telugu Wikipedians changed plan to a general library which is established by department this year, plans to create a physical resource center is not actualized. A2K supported Project Tiger Edit-a-thon in Telugu, especially worked on improving quality of the articles accepted. In Local preference list, added Machine translated articles came out of prioritization exercise and awaiting for improvement. We created guidelines to improve quality of translation and language style guide. A2K conducted Wikidata Workshop to Andhra Loyola College students and provided support to Hyderabad Wikidata Workshop conducted by Asaf Bartov.
- Learning
As providing resources to community members found to be excellent way to improve quality and content, should scale up its current activity (resource exchange) and in the scale of requirement providing access upon individual request can't sustain. A2K should look into different possibilities of making reference material which is not under freely licensed but can be in open access to make available online and create a sustainable model to do it. This inturn helps both Wikipedia and Wikisource too.
- Impact
“ | I started contributing to Telugu Wikisource after learning about project in Telugu Wikisource Workshop. I am also a participant in Telugu language classical commentators' whatsapp group - Padya Soundaryam. I started digitizing classical Telugu work Ramayanam by Katta Varadaraja Kavi in Telugu Wikisource and simultaneously commenting on this work in Padya Soundaryam group. This is very satisfying and bliss as I am contributing to Telugu Literary World in multi-fold. Apart from the original work, I am planning to publish this work with commentary in Telugu Wikisource under a free license too.

Telugu Village articles project resulted in improvement of tens of thousands of village articles in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Improved tens of thousands of articles with content about Educational, Health, Irrigation, Geographical, Demographic and other aspects of the village. These articles were considered as the most serious quality concern of Telugu Wikipedia right from their creation using a bot in 2006-07. They were stubs for several years and community considered these articles as important and quality issue at the same time. Improving them with content is effecting quality of project positively. Regarding Project Tiger community improved existing articles with good quality.
- Follow-up
- With the collaboration of co-organizer Chaduvari and major contributor Ramarao, A2K could figure out next phase of this project which will be improving articles qualitatively with diverse and unique content like toponymic explanations, historical aspects, and other details. A2K will help community by making unique and authentic content available (Ex: Re-licensing and digitizing works like Kadapa Oorla Perlu, Paschima Godavari Jillalo Mahatmuni Sancharam, etc.,) and will conduct capacity building activities for this.
- Basing on our learning in Resource exchange, A2K would like to invest in making more quality content available online. Hosting the digitized reference content actively by collaborating with some organizations like Google Books. Also need to support efforts of magazines like Misimi which are going to provide their entire content in open access.
Kannada University Hampi Wiktionary work
[edit]- What work was done
We had started digitisation work to enrich contents on Wiktionary at Kannada University Hampi in December. This process of digitisation has three steps. Dravida nighantu book will be relicensed. Students typed entire book which contains about 50000-60000 words approximately. Then that digitized excel sheet we will add to Wiktionary. We had conducted the offline program in February to PhD students of Dravida Samskruti Adhyana Kendra, Kannada University Hampi.
- Learnings
From this event, we learnt the collaboration with the particular department will bring fruitful content not only Wikipedia. Also, we can put our effort in digiting dictionaries like Dravida Nighantu. We can also start these kinds of digitisation work in other institutions to help them in typing in Unicode. This will help in growing Kannada language in long run.
- Follow-up
Dravida Samskruti Adhyana Kendra interested to include the Wikimedia project related works in their academics. A2K is willing to support with the resources.
- Impact
It is very important for having Kannada typing knowledge to any Kannada PhD students. Before we digitizing Dravida nighantu was in non-Unicode. After digitization PhD students learnt about Kannada software in which they can type in Unicode. Also, they learnt Kannada typing. This will help us in future to digitize more books efficiently. Now they can publish their research papers also in Unicode, previously it was in non-Unicode. This will help to give references on kn.wiki about Dravidian culture-related articles.
Karnataka Rajyotsava edit-a-thon
[edit]- What work was done
The November month is special for Kannadiga's, so with the community idea, Karnataka Rajyotsava Edit-a-thon was conducted with the theme Karnataka-Kannadigas-Kannada was conducted in the month of November. It was a month-long edit-a-thon. In this edit-a-thon along with Kannada community, very close community members to Kannada community members also contributed to this program.
- Learnings
Since we did this edit-a-thon for the first time in Kannada Wikipedia, we did not prepare an important articles list. We understood after the edit-a-thon we need to prepare a list of articles which can be created in different areas based on the theme. That would help community members to choose an article also they will understand the importance of the article.
- Follow-up
We are conducting the edit-a-thon in 2018 also. We are planning to collaborate other edit-a-thon with the Karnataka Rajyotsava edit-a-thon.
- Impact
From this edit-a-thon, 48 articles created in Kannada and 34 articles expanded. Along with that 15 articles created on theme in other Indic language wiki's. From this edit-a-thon, Kannada community connected more with different Indic communities. In future Kannada community is willing to collaborate with them in similar edit-a-thons.
Mysuru Workshop (Wildlife and ecology)
[edit]- What work was done
Kiran Bagade had attended the workshop conducted by A2K in Gubbi labs R&D Centre IISc Bangalore, after that he coordinated a thematic workshop in Mysuru with the help of CIS-A2K about Wildlife and Ecology to enrich contents in those areas. This workshop helped to create awareness about how even naturalists, wildlife conservationist can contribute on Wikipedia in native languages. If Wikipedia readers get information and statistics in native language about the wildlife and ecology there will be conservation by the information sharing in between. Participants also understood the importance of using different local names instead of only using scientific names. Since participants from Wildlife background, we requested them to upload photos and illustrations on commons.
- Learnings
We had a lot of arguments about why templates are in English, and why are the tools are in English. From this, we understood the importance of work on Translate.wiki. We are planning to work on translate.wiki also. Even from the community, there are voices such as how we can do work on translate.wiki. We are planning to conduct a woThe rkshop on that. A2K team realised that investment in this workshop did not give the expected outcome. So A2K decided not to follow-up this event. Since the idea is good A2K is trying to collaborate with other like-minded organisers like Gubbi Labs.
- Impact
This workshop helped to identify the tech gap in active community members in person-level. Also, there was a huge debate between one of the participants about the translation of template and other parameters on Kannada Wikipedia.

Oneindia Workshop
[edit]Oneindia is a well recognised online news portal who's head office is in Bangalore. The workshop was conducted for editors of Oneindia Kannada. This workshop bought good relation between media persons who are helping in publicity of Wiki events in Karnataka. Also, the workshop helped them in understanding how references matters in Wikipedia and what is the need for a well-written article on newspapers and news portals. This workshop also helped to create awareness about using commons and free licenses images under attribution and uploading images to commons. This workshop coordinated with A2K by the community member Vikas Hegde. From Oneindia Mahesh helped us to organise the event.
- Learnings
It was a quite small duration workshop. Since they are the media people we were able to train only for a few hours for one group. After that, we had to train another set. Even though it was a challenge we could able to tell them what Wikipedia is and how to make edits as well as different Wikimedia Projects. Since the participants are media employees they are not free most of the times to follow-up as well as A2K investing in ideas about how we can work with them.
- Impact
This event helped to create the awareness of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. After this workshop Oneindia supporting to reach Wiki workshops and meet-ups to larger audiences.
(Wiki workshop was good. It will be good if editing a new page and editing previously created pages made a little easy. Newcomers may face difficulty adding references and links at the first attempt. If experienced editors help that time it will be good. Overall, these kinds of workshops very much needed and helpful.) --Mahesh Malnad | ” |
Indian women and crafts
[edit]- What is the event
Indian women and crafts workshop were conducted at Janastu on 8th March. In this workshop, we taught the basics of Wikipedia to the Janastu employees and few people who came from outside. In this workshop, we gave them tasks on how to use templates and tools since the participants are from the tech background. They knew computer programming very well. In the same month, that is on March 25 there was a follow-up edit-a-thon.
- Learnings
It will be very difficult to have a workshop in a very short duration. We cannot concentrate much on Wiki policies. Even though it worked with this bunch of participants. Because they are from the tech background. Unless or until participants are from tech background it is very difficult to conduct a workshop and deliver things completely. We will miss out so many things because we have very less time. Also, we learned how to conduct the workshop to a tech background people and make them understand policies then they will work on the tech-related part.
- Follow-up
We are talking to Janastu to have a long duration workshop. We got the very good response from Janastu. We are planning to schedule the workshop/edit-a-thon in the first quarter.
- Impact
This workshop helped the relation between Janastu and CIS-A2K. Previously one workshop happened in 2013. After that, there were no Wikipedia workshops conducted in Janastu. This workshop leading us to conduct more workshop and start a project about Indian women and crafts.
Bengaluru Inscription stone project
[edit]- What work was done
Uday of Kumar and Vinay are to software engineers from Bangalore who traced 30 inscriptions stones which are still present in Bengaluru city out of around 175 stones which are mentioned on Epigraphia of Carnatica Volume 10 written by B. L. Rice. This project got a good amount of publicity because of the Facebook group. because of Vinay and Uday gave all their work like photographs, floor trace images and google maps points of inscriptions stone inside Bangalore city under the free license. This helped us a lot. Kannada community has created articles about available 30 stones in Bangalore. During this map-frame is enabled in Kannada Wikipedia and we added longitude and latitude of the stones so that people who are interested can see those stones physically other than on photos.
- Learning
From this project, A2K learnt that when we push a project to the community with good faith and good concept community will show positive interest and they will work on a project with their personal interest.
- Follow-up
We are planning to conduct a workshop and edit-a-thon on the theme of inscriptions stones of Bangalore village. We spoke to a few institutions who showed interest and we are looking forward to working with them.
- Impact
From this project, Kannada Wikipedia got 30 articles which clearly shows Bengaluru history. Before we are adding the contents about inscriptions stones of Bengaluru on Wikipedia there were no other materials to study about stones in readable forthanow whoever visiting Kannada Wikipedia can search those articles and visit those stones.
“ | A chance meeting with a wikipedian at a conference led us to the conversation about how inscription stones lie neglected in the heart of Bengaluru due to lack of awareness about their importance. It further led to a presentation of our project #InscriptionStonesOfBangalore at a Kannada Wikipedia meet. Wikipedians immediately understood the need & importance of documenting inscription stones in vernacular. The first page was created and the first edit already happened at the end of the presentation.
Today, with all the inscription stones in Bengaluru being mapped and documented, wikipedians should take pride in this effort of theirs in bringing together people to use technology in documenting our heritage of over 1200 years. The awareness created through the Wikipedia pages will go a long way in inspiring people to protect inscription stones. --Vinay Kumar, #InscriptionStonesOfBangalore |

In 2017, CIS-A2K collaborated with the Sambad media house to organise India's first 100 Women Edit-a-thon, Sambad is one of the most circulated newspaper and a media house in Odisha, this initiative was planned to bridge the gender gap on Odia Wikipedia.
- Activity
Continuing the collaboration, A2K in collaboration with the Odia Wikipedians organised the second iteration of the Sambad Gender gap bridging edit-a-thons in the month of April. The theme of the edit-a-thon was to improve and create articles on women's health, hygiene and social issues on Odia Wikipedia. A group of 18 journalists were part of the two days program, followed as of the first iteration of Sambad 100 Women edit-a-thon. The first day of the event was for the introduction to Wikipedia for new participants and teach them how to edit Wikipedia, Around 9 new journalists were part of the introduction session followed by the edit-a-thon where 18 journalists from Sambad created or improved 21 articles.
- Impact
Altogether 73 articles have been improved or created as a part of this campaign by 28 journalists from the Sambad media house. Collaboration with Sambad has not only helped in bridging the content gap but the community and CIS-A2K, also tried to bridge the gap in access of content in an Archival house to improve Wikipedia articles.
- Learning
- Involving previous participants along with new participants helped to ease the process.
- Translation of articles related to Medical science was difficult for some participants.
- Follow up
We are planning to conduct atleast two activities in a year to keep in touch with the journalists and organise a session on how to tackle fake news at Sambad.

Women's History Month Edit-a-thon
[edit]- Intro
Women's History Month is an annual Wikipedia edit-a-thon organised by CIS-A2K in collaboration with the Odia Wikipedians to improve or create articles related to women achievers on Odia Wikipedia. The project was started in 2015 with a mission of bridging the gender-gap in contents on Odia Wikipedia. In the last three iterations, more than 350 articles were created as a part of this campaign.
- Activity & Impact
This year, CIS-A2K organised the 4th iteration of the Women's History Month by preparing a list of articles on potential topics or existing articles which can be created or improved. As a part of this event, a total of 5 participants signed up as participants for the event and have improved or created 35 articles related to Women achievers from different fields on Odia Wikipedia.
- Learning
As the edit-a-thon was planned simultaneously with the Project Tiger edit-a-thon, the participants and the number of articles ratio were decreased in comparison to previous iteration where 236 articles were created.
- Follow-up
Some of the participants of Women's History Month edit-a-thon were part of the resource person team for the Sambad Women & Health edit-a-thon.
Skill Building Activities
CIS-A2K has been working with Indic Wikimedians to enhance their Wiki-skill and leadership. It has been established (through needs assessment surveys and feedback from previous workshops) that the majority of Indian Wikimedians are unaware of the tools and gadgets that have been in existence and used extensively by global Wikimedians. This problem is compounded due to the lack of effort in documenting these tools in Indian languages and the basic absence of technical training. CIS-A2K has been working to bridge this gap by bringing together Wikimedians who have shown interest in technical learning along with members from like-minded communities and organise training and workshops to discuss, introduce and document the various tools, techniques and gadgets available to Wikimedians.
Train-the-Trainer 2018
[edit]Train-the-Trainer (TTT) is an annual residential wiki-training workshop to groom leadership skills among the Indian Wikimedia community members. The first iteration of TTT took place in Bangalore, India in 2013, which was followed by successful iterations in 2015, 2016, and 2017. We got a feedback from the participants that all the earlier iterations of TTT took place in Bangalore. A2K is gradually conducting some of the biggest workshop in other cities. This year's Train-the-Trainer was conducted in Mysore, which is 149.9 km from Bangalore.
- Activity
The fifth iteration of the workshop took place between 26-28 January 2018 in Mysore, Karnataka. The event page may be seen here. Some of the topics discussed during Train-the-Trainer 2018 were:
- Conducting a Wiki-event (works and best practices in pre-event, during-event and post-event)
- Grants and other support structure
- Some of the most remarkable global and national initiatives (such as Wikipedia Asian Month, Women in Red
- Social media best practices
- Diversity and gender gap bridging initiatives
- How to conduct in "Wiki Loves" initiatives
- Learning
- Success
Over the years Train-the-Trainer has gradually become a workshop from where participants learn leadership enhance-skill. Here is a compilation of few feedback
.Year | Number of participants | Communities | Activities conducted by participants |
---|---|---|---|
2017 | 19 | Bengali, English, Kannada, Maithili, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu | Wiki Loves Uniformed Services, Hindi Wikipedia outreach |
2018 | 24 | Bengali, English, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu |
- Challenges faced
The venue of the workshop was Mysore. Just a week before the event, a Karnataka-strike was announced on 25 January.[1] For logistics it was difficult for the participants' travel in Karnataka.
MediaWiki Training
[edit]In 2018, MediaWiki Training or MWT was conducted in Bangalore on 1-2 February 2018. This was the fourth iteration of the workshop. Previously MWT was conducted in 2015, 2016, and 2017. 8 participants from Indic Wikimedia communities participated in the workshop.
- Changes in the 2018 iteration of MediaWiki Training
MediaWIki Training, like other training workshops of CIS-A2K are flexible and changes are made both in planning and structure based on feedback, observation and analysis. This year MediaWiki Training focused only on the editors who were actively working on MediaWiki, Phabricator etc. We got User:01tonythomas as a primary resource person, and User:Jayprakash12345 as both a participant and a supporting resource person. This was an invitation-based workshop. We consulted the resource persons before selecting the participants.
- Learning
- After having 01tonythomas and Jayprakash12345 as resource person, our learning become stronger that community-members' training capabilities should be utilised wherever applicable and possible.
- It is good to have a smaller group of focused participants to achieve better outcome, for workshops like MediaWiki Training.
- Success
We were able to bring Indic Wikimedians working for quality standards on respective Wiki and on purely technical aspects like extension, bugs fixing on Phabicator.
Mini Train the Trainer (Mini TTT 2018) Program at Pune
[edit]As a part of Work Plan, Mini Train the Trainer (Mini TTT 2018) Program at Pune was conducted on 24th & 25th February 2018. Total 19 active editors from Marathi community participated. The participants profiles and the expected outcomes were mapped. They were divided into following three categories and inputs were designed accordingly.
“ | For the first time I got to meet many wikipedians who are contributing to mrwiki. Everyone works in different capacities to improve mrwiki. I was introduced to many technical and policy aspects of Wikipedia. Which would be really helpful in building policies and tools gadgets on mrwiki.
Specially maintenance part of Wikipedia which is greatly needed for growing wiki like mrwiki. Where organization of the content becomes crucial. Obviously I got introduced to many js userscripts which make editing easy and that is helping me a lot. Now I can contribute more in less time and efficiently with rooted perspective of Wikipedia policies. -User:Sureshkhole

Wikimedia Conference (India)
[edit]Wikimedia India Conference 2018 was organised in collaboration with CIS-A2K and Wikimedia India. This meeting was organised with an aim of providing support (conference and participation details) to Wikimedians representing Indic communities and other affiliations/teams with Wikimedia foundation (Affcom, Simple APG).
The Bangalore meeting of WmCoN India 2018 becomes important for three reasons:
- Community members who were earlier participants shared best practices and learning with new participants.
- Various ideas of partnerships and collaborations with global communities for the advancement of Indic communities were discussed and finalised.
- A network of support and safety for participants from India was created. This network was helpful in tasks of coordination, discussion and various logistics related issues.
Request page
[edit]CIS-A2K project has a request page intended for Wikimedian/s from India to place requests for support from CIS-A2K. Between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2018, CIS-A2K received 18 support requests. Here are few example requests A2K received on the request page this work-plan year.

I made very few edits in 2012 and made some in 2016. Those edits are about my village Ponugupadu. But, I never thought of contributing to Wikipedia seriously until I got mail via Wikipedia Mail Service and later phone call. I started contributing to Telugu Village project and working on improving thousands of Village articles in Telugu Wikipedia from almost one year. Reaching out to new users who made constructive edits and didn't continue in Wikipedia pays off and my Wikipedia journey is a good example for that.
Yarra Ramarao successfully improved thousands of Village articles. Morethan 10,000 articles which are in need of improving with factually correct administrative data after Reorganization of Telangana districts, got improved both with administrative reorganization information and census info. User:Chaduvari could improve thousands of items about Telugu Villages in Wikidata. Telugu Village Project coordinators realized benefits of improving structured data for Villages to change data in thousands of village articles by changing data in Wikidata. This is being built up for upcoming Indian census which happens in 2021.
Activities with thematic groups and people resulted sustained engagement, better retention, and specialized content to the projects. While User:Shiv's fotografia completed his 100WikiCommonsdays which benefited project with more than 100 images related to Wildlife and Tribal life, on the other hand User:Adbh266 continued after 100 days and went on till 365 Days of Commons contribution (inspired by Pranayraj's 365Wikidays). Padya Sowndaryam group members - Ramesam and GSVS Murthy become part of Telugu Wikisource Community and retained their contributions to community for more than 10 months. Ramesam also participated in Train-the-trainer 2018. He started digitizing and proofreading "Sri Ramayanam" by Katta Varadaraja Kavi on hand in hand writing and sharing commentary in Padya Sowndaryam Group which inturn going to be re-licensed into CC-BY-SA, which gives an example for perfect synergy.
- Learning
When we plan events with women or exclusively for women, there must be different approach especially in the preference of place and time. As Indian Working Women typically have additional burden of taking care of entire family and working competently in office, one should have different expectation and should be patient in following-up them. While on other hand, working with cult organizations those which wanted to push their content especially into Wikipedia need to be handled with utmost care.
Following up good edits made by New comers and learners in Wikipedia and supporting them by training (online/offline) will be fruitful. Interested Volunteers come out of such intervention will have more retention.
- Follow-up
A2K participated in consecutive annual conference of Padya Sowndaryam group known as "Saraswatha Jyotsna" in July 2018 and planning to conduct workshops for the members of group which will potentially scale up collaboration with the group. A2K is mapping cultural organizations in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana which will help as first point to scale up entire idea of working with thematic groups which will follow Workshops, Collaborations, Content Donation and other activities to interested organizations and groups.
A2K will conduct an advanced Wikidata session to Telugu Wikipedians which will improve collaboration between both the projects. Conducting a small project which will improve Telugu Wikipedia using structured data created in Wikidata will further enhances more contribution to Wikidata from Telugu Wikipedia Community.
Kannada
[edit]- What work was done
During Mysuru workshop, Vikas Hegde mentioned that we need a training in AWB and Wiki tools training. So we planned an AWB and tools and gadgets raining at the CIS office. This workshop we planned for little-advanced editors. But few beginner editors came to the event. Because of this, we could not conduct the workshop as we planned. We had to explain the basics of Wikipedia during that we gave AWB practising tasks to advanced editors.
- Learnings
A2K failed in selecting participants. We learnt we should be more careful in selecting participants. Because of one/two participants program did not go well. This affected the entire training. In the future, we should select participants in some structured process. Other than that we learnt the potential in Kannada community is with only a few. There are very good tech supporters in Kannada. We should support them. Others who are willing to learn we need to start Intensive Personalised Wiki Training (IPWT).
- Impact
Anoop Rao had taken sessions even in his tight schedule. Because of this community members met him and community realised that he is a strong tech leader in Kannada community. Now the community is in touch with him and he is helping the community a lot and community members in contact with each other.

[edit]WikiTungi programs
[edit]"I will say, CIS-A2K is our one of the important partner in our journey especially in India. We had organised a workshop is North Odisha University in Baripada. This event was sponsored bt CIS-A2K, We had the pleasure of having one of the member of CIS, Sailesh Patnaik. Sharing his experience with new Santali Wikipedians provided a lot of ideas and knowledge. CIS is doing a great job in India in promotion of knowledge through the internet platform, Santali Wikipedia is a result of one such efforts."
- Intro
The WikiTungi program was started in December 2015, to train the community members (new and old) and to introduce them the broader Wikimedia Movement and projects, other than editing, to bring them out of the online world and interact with the other community members. The WikiTungi has been active in two different cities of the state of Odisha, one in Puri and the other one in Bhubaneswar. The CIS-A2K has been supporting the two WikiTungis (Bhubaneswar and Puri) for over two years now. While members of Bhubaneswar WikiTungi meet once in every month to discuss new projects, events, and challenges faced by the community, the community members of Puri used to meet bi-monthly.
- Activities
- Bhubaneswar Heritage Edit-a-thon
Bhubaneswar heritage edit-a-thon was an online edit-a-thon aimed to improve and create articles on the heritage monuments of the Indian city Bhubaneswar. In this edit-a-thon around 26 Wikipedians from 12 different Wikipedia projects participated and created around 192 articles. CIS-A2K is following up with the authorities on the further process of QRcode project.
- Collaboration with Asian Athletics Championships 2017
Collaboration with Asian Athletics Championships is considered as one of the biggest content collaboration in the Odia Wikimedia projects. After the edit-a-thon, that happened on 30th July 2017, the Asian Athletics Championships website was released under CC-BY-4.0 website, which allowed the community members to upload the images of the championship into Wikimedia Commons. The social media outreach of this collaboration helped in adding almost all the images from the website to Wikimedia Commons, around 300+ images were added to Wikimedia Commons. Also, two members of the community were given the pass by the organization to attend the Opening Ceremony of the event. A2K member Saileshpat and Jnanaranjan Sahu attended the Opening ceremony, around 100 images were clicked during the event of which 50 are added to Commons. Over these years, we have witnessed the use of these images by different media reports and picture stories.
- Wikidata Workshop
A capacity building program was planned by the Wikimedia Foundation to train community members about the basic of Wikidata and understand how to contribute to it. As a part of the India tour, a two-day long event was planned in Bhubaneswar. While the Bhubaneswar WikiTungi members lead the event, the CIS-A2K helped the members in organizing the Wikidata workshop at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar.
- Planning of Wikisource and Wikipedia Anniversary
The community members took the lead on organising the 3rd Wikisource conference and 16th Odia Wikipedia birthday by taking different roles and responsibility for the conference. Which brought around 40 Wikipedia ( 20 participants in each event) and organised the conference successfully. Members of Puri WikiTungi were also part of the event,
- Impact
Over the years the WikiTungi program has catered over 20 active Wikimedians and above 50 individuals in its meetup. In the last two years, WikiTungi project has involved more than 18 editors and about 2,600+ articles were created and more than 8000+ articles have been edited by Wikimedia involved in the project.
- Learning
Puri Tungi was mostly of students and has currently been inactive due to different commitments of the community members, CIS-A2K is trying to revive the community by organising more activities in Puri.
- Follow up
CIS-A2K will devlop new strategies for the growth of Tungi members and involve community members in more activitis. We would also try again to revive the Puri WikiTungi.
