Candidate Introduction
Introductory statement / Application summary (maximum 200 words): Why are you running for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee? What would you contribute? | I'm committed to ensuring the safety of all community members. I have experience working with the community to address and promote global initiatives to close the gender gap in Wikimedia projects. As a candidate for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinator Committee, my main goal is to promote an environment that is safe, inclusive, and equitable in decision-making, and to listen to and address community concerns in order to foster an inclusive environment both online and offline. I will bring my best skills in conflict resolution and communication; I am willing to help develop people-centred policies and protect them from harassment. |
Please describe your Wikimedia experience (such as contributions to the Wikimedia projects, memberships in Wikimedia organizations or affiliates, experience working on conduct issues in your community, activities as a Wikimedia movement organizer, or participation in building Wikimedia policies). | I have been editing Wikipedia since 2014, promoting online and offline open knowledge. My volunteer work has focused on two main areas. Firstly, I have made significant efforts towards the inclusion of minoritized languages. As a speaker and researcher of the Catalan language, I actively contribute to the Catalan Wikipedia because I believe that Wikimedia is a vital tool for dissemination and a crucial reference point for preserving the identity of minoritized languages and preventing their disappearance. Additionally, I am committed to reducing the gender gap. Since 2016, I have been conducting editing workshops at universities, with a specific focus on addressing this gap from two perspectives: reducing the gender gap in content and encouraging greater participation from women editors. These workshops promote gender equality and ensure equitable representation. |

Please briefly describe 3 situations that show how you worked on, or advised others on, a complex conduct or policy issue. How did you work with others to address the situations? | My experience in the Wikimedia community is diverse. When participating in editing general topics, I have observed an active dynamic where project creation flows naturally, volunteering is easily engaged, and guidance, training, and mentoring of new editors prove effective, yielding positive results in terms of retention. However, when working on projects aimed at addressing the gender gap, I have encountered significant challenges that require a more nuanced approach to overcome and solve. The editing process is indeed complicated by established consensus, which can raise questions about neutrality, relevance, and verifiability. These uncertainties lead to prolonged debates that may make female editors feel discredited, harassed, and poorly integrated into the community. It is crucial to address these issues promptly and effectively to ensure that all editors, regardless of gender, feel valued and respected. By doing so, we can improve the retention rate of female editors, particularly among younger editors. |
Leadership Experience
Can you describe a policy, on wiki or off, that you helped to create or change? What did you learn from this experience? | As a member of the WikimediaES, I have played an essential role in promoting the movement strategy and advocating for equity in access to knowledge. From the outset, I have prioritized diversity and equity principles as essential foundations. This has established the groundwork for an inclusive process that seeks to make our community feel welcome, increase trust, and support innovation. Collaborative work is significant and has played a role in ensuring that our community is well-informed about decision-making processes and the movement's strategic goals. |
How have you been able to empower people to make their voices heard? | My dedication to empowering women is clearly demonstrated through my unwavering commitment to the Wikimedia community. For several years, I have successfully led numerous training sessions, workshops, and mentoring programs, with the sole aim of equipping women with the necessary tools to participate in the Wikimedia movement actively. All of these workshops align perfectly with the movement's strategy for 2030, preparing participants to make significant and lasting contributions to Wikimedia projects and the movement as a whole. Support and training can lead to leadership opportunities within the community, as demonstrated by the fact that two women I trained are now part of the Amical Wikimedia Board. |
Sometimes in professional situations, there are personality conflicts. Explain how you remain productive even with personality conflicts. | When personality conflicts arise, I promote collaboration and shared goals while keeping my attention fixed on the purpose of the work or project. My calm and conciliatory nature allows me to reflect before making a decision, which helps me mitigate tensions and defuse escalating conflicts. |
Strategic Thinking | |
In your opinion, how can the U4C be a positive influence in the Wikimedia movement? | Effective implementation of the Universal Code of Conduct is essential to ensure every member feels valued and secure when participating in the community. The code represents a necessary change within the movement, aiming to create a welcoming environment and promote fundamental values such as respect, empathy, and collaboration. Emphasizing the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and cooperation is crucial in building trust and security in the Wikimedia community. This is particularly important for newcomers and those from underrepresented groups who may feel marginalized or intimidated by hostile interactions. By creating a receptive environment, we can prevent volunteers from quickly abandoning their work and experiencing feelings of pain and rejection towards the Wikimedia community. We must not miss the valuable opportunity to incorporate their expertise, as it contributes to constructing unbiased knowledge and narrowing existing gaps. |
How would you help the Universal Code of Conduct develop and improve over time? | In our communities, we have all witnessed debates where the work of others is criticized, and the existence of harassment is denied. I am committed to defending the diversity of opinions within the Wikimedia community, fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment where every voice is valued. I will collaborate with chapters and groups to adapt the UCoC to their specific needs and requirements, ensuring that it serves as a global framework that effectively addresses biases, prejudices, and all forms of harassment. Our aim is to ensure a welcoming environment and transparent and fair governance that will enable us to build together a world where ‘every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge’. |
