Candidate Introduction
Introductory statement / Application summary (maximum 200 words): Why are you running for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee? What would you contribute? | Hello, I'm SpringProof, but you can call me Jack. I'm a college student studying Japanese and linguistics. I love the law, and want to become an important lawyer someday for a good cause. I have been a part of a few internships over the years with local governments that I believe makes me a perfect fit for the U4C. Although I may be thought of as a Wikimedia newbie by comparison to some, I think my thoughtful takes to problems will make me a valuable member of the Committee. I have strong values, including public service and truthfulness, and I vehemently—yet civilly—speak my mind when I know something is not right. I have experience working well in a team, yet I know to make sure all community members' voices are heard in their Committee. And as your community-at-large member, you can count on me to represent your voice—no matter which wiki or region you are a part of. |
Please describe your Wikimedia experience (such as contributions to the Wikimedia projects, memberships in Wikimedia organizations or affiliates, experience working on conduct issues in your community, activities as a Wikimedia movement organizer, or participation in building Wikimedia policies). | I have been an editor on the English Wikipedia for almost five years. During that time, I initially mostly worked on copy-editing articles, but now I mainly patrol the recent changes log for vandalism. |
Professional Experience, Skills and Education
Please briefly describe 3 situations that show how you worked on, or advised others on, a complex conduct or policy issue. How did you work with others to address the situations? | A few years ago, I was working as an elections official at my local polling place, and I noticed that one of the other officials was not following the correct procedure for issuing ballots. I let my lead clerk know and gently corrected the other clerk as to the proper procedure. In that time, I learned to let people try to correct their own problems before stepping in and asking if they would like help. |
Leadership Experience
Can you describe a policy, on wiki or off, that you helped to create or change? What did you learn from this experience? | Although I have not directly had an effect on policy, I have worked with my superiors in jobs to help fix inefficiencies or injustices that I saw. Although I know I can't fix all the problems I see, it certainly doesn't hurt to try. |
How have you been able to empower people to make their voices heard? | Being part of a team, I like to have smaller discussions with colleagues to make sure their ideas are being shared. In addition, as a Committee member, I am also confident in making sure that constituents' voices are also heard. |
Sometimes in professional situations, there are personality conflicts. Explain how you remain productive even with personality conflicts. | Recently I have had to learn about how to deal with personality differences in the world the hard way. In the first place, I try not to touch a nerve, but otherwise, I understand that not all people might get along (especially in a rule-making body), and that's okay. If conflict arises, I talk to the individuals in a personal and calm manner, listening to their qualms. If there is a reasonable thing I can do to help, I am of course available for support. |
Strategic Thinking | |
In your opinion, how can the U4C be a positive influence in the Wikimedia movement? | I believe the U4C to be an important body in the Wikimedia movement. As the movement involves countless numbers of people from all over the globe, a unified document of standards of behavior is essential to ensure the stability of the project. And as such, a custodial group would be beneficial to make sure the goal of said standards is enforced and grows with changes in the community. |
How would you help the Universal Code of Conduct develop and improve over time? | Having education and experience in statute interpretation, I am committed to clarifying the UCC when any problems do arise. In addition, I am dedicated to making sure enforcement is universal and no loopholes develop. |
