Candidate Introduction
Introductory statement / Application summary (maximum 200 words): Why are you running for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee? What would you contribute? | Contributing to Wikimedia projects has been a rewarding path, but also full of challenges, including the gender gap. I want to be part of the U4C to not only contribute to Wikimedia projects by editing, but also to serve with my experience inside and outside the free encyclopedia. Throughout my life I have worked to build safe places for all people, doing so here would be putting into other spaces what I have learned working collectively. Wikimedia projects should not only promote free and collaborative knowledge, but also the construction of safe and inclusive spaces |
Please describe your Wikimedia experience (such as contributions to the Wikimedia projects, memberships in Wikimedia organizations or affiliates, experience working on conduct issues in your community, activities as a Wikimedia movement organizer, or participation in building Wikimedia policies). | I have been an active collaborator of Wikimedia projects for six years, I have fulfilled different roles in Wikimedia Mexico as a communication officer, volunteer and currently as part of the board of directors. Throughout this time, I not only managed the communication area, I also organized editatons, workshops, contests and was part of the workshops of the first and second school for Wikipedian women. During this time I have been able to learn about and confront tensions within the community, but also outside of it. |
Professional Experience, Skills and Education
Please briefly describe 3 situations that show how you worked on, or advised others on, a complex conduct or policy issue. How did you work with others to address the situations? | Throughout my working life I have dedicated myself to facilitating processes that include the attention of cases, which have always kept me empathetic and willing to dialogue, to build collective responsibility.
My work inside and outside Wikimedia projects has always been with different vulnerable populations. Working with children in situations of poverty and violence has allowed me to generate listening strategies and constant dialogue in complex situations, and I have also been able to generate participatory methodologies that put people's voices and rights at the center. |
Leadership Experience
Can you describe a policy, on wiki or off, that you helped to create or change? What did you learn from this experience? | In my work, situations of sexual and workplace harassment have arisen. In this sense, I collaborated to build a Protocol for Attention to Sexual and Workplace Harassment, to address the different cases in a timely manner, investigating, attending to the case and repairing the damage. if this were necessary. These Internal Protocol of which I was a part was the basis for building a Model Protocol for civil society organizations. This has allowed me to train on the subject and learn about the most current discussions such as the intersectional approach and the non-punitive approach. In this sense, I have learned that knowledge is collective, and that only together can we create safe spaces for all people. |
How have you been able to empower people to make their voices heard? | Throughout my work I have promoted that all the people I collaborate with can express themselves freely in safe listening spaces. In this sense, for me it is important to discuss complex problems and recognize conflict as a possibility for change. From this principle, all people from their different starting points recognize their voice as something that must be heard and I only consider myself a vehicle to achieve it. |
Sometimes in professional situations, there are personality conflicts. Explain how you remain productive even with personality conflicts. | My principle is active listening where we can all feel safe. Although conflict is necessary, I remain productive because there is a common goal that cannot be advanced without collective work. |
Strategic Thinking | |
In your opinion, how can the U4C be a positive influence in the Wikimedia movement? | Personally, I consider that the U4C is necessary, because it allows us to have clear routes for situations that happen and that need to be addressed in a timely manner. This will allow us to take a community responsibility to maintain healthy spaces and practices within the Wikimedia community. |
How would you help the Universal Code of Conduct develop and improve over time? | The U4C is like the Wikimedia projects, a living entity that, based on dialogue and collaboration, is transforming and improving all the time. Under that premise, it is important to always promote the necessary discussions so that this policy is improved. |
