The Ghana Polls 2024

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Ghana Polls 2024 is an initiative by Open Foundation West Africa that seeks to provide accurate, unbiased updates on Wikipedia during the elections, ensuring that citizens across Ghana can access accurate, reliable information throughout the electoral process.

Ghana has long been celebrated as a beacon of democracy in West Africa and the continent at large. However, the stakes are high during election seasons, with political rivalries often escalating into violence, intimidation, and misinformation. These challenges threaten the integrity of the electoral process and the nation's stability. Recognising the critical need for proactive measures, Open Foundation West Africa (OFWA) is unwavering in its commitment to spearheading initiatives that promote peaceful and fair elections.

As Ghana approached the 2024 general elections, fostering a climate of peace, tolerance, and respect among political parties, candidates, and voters was crucial. Historical trends, which indicated that tensions and conflicts could sometimes mar electoral periods in Ghana, underscored the urgent need for this advocacy campaign. OFWA was dedicated to promoting peace and social justice and proposed a comprehensive advocacy campaign to ensure peaceful elections in 2024.

On Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, we hosted media professionals, Wikipedia editors, and volunteers at our office space for a workshop themed “Combating Misinformation and Disinformation” ahead of the 2024 general election.

The workshop focused on the effects of misinformation and disinformation, especially during the upcoming General Elections. Ghana Polls 2024 Edith-a-Thon

The Ghana Polls 2024 Edit-a-thon, was held in Accra, Tamale and Walewale. The event aimed to create and improve Wikipedia articles related to the Ghanaian electoral process, key political institutions, and critical issues shaping the Ghanaian elections.

The Edit-a-thon drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including researchers, students, and Wikimedia contributors. Facilitators provided hands-on training on editing Wikipedia, emphasizing accuracy, neutrality, and reliable sources. Participants collaboratively developed content, enhancing the online representation of Ghanaian political history and election-related topics.

Over the day, the edit-a-thon brought about 61 editors who created and edited over 200 Wikipedia articles, addressing gaps in topics such as voter education, political parties, Election results, Constituencies, Presidential Candidates, Parliamentary Candidates and electoral reforms.
