Template talk:Translation status

I love this idea ... however I have some idea to alter (it will help us both translation coordinators and translators imho).

1. Reduce the number of status. Currently there are around seven status. My proposal here is that we will have around four status: Translate, Refine, Ready, Published (each name is interim name). If we are working on a document which will stay on meta and not need to move to somewhere including wmf website, we will use the first two status: Translate and Refine.

2. Change the order of langs. I am hesitant to propose that, since it means not every language is treated equally ... however in translation sphere Transcom set a list of priorities, named "core lang", mainly due to its limited capacity and availablility of translators. Transcom has been working according this priority list. In my preferences, the languages on this template will doubly sorted; once classified by priorities (so En and Fr come at the top, followed by Es, Ja, Zh, and the third priority langs, and the forth ... and so on...). How do you think?

   When we have a definitive list of "core langs", there will be the possibility to split the list in two zones: top-zone, core langs; bottom-zone, all the others; alpha-sorted each. jd ❂ 14:20, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

1. It seems to me fine. Having two parts seems to me feasible ... we would like to emphasize that we hope to have *all* languages, and it is mainly our capacity which forced us to have limited number of languages as "core". And I would like to stress this "core lang" scheme is a working flame only for us transcom. Other people may have their opinions, and we welcome them to let us know their ideas.

   Then what should be considered our "core langs"? It would be the best to discuss it openly with people as many as possible each of whom would reflect the diversity on our global community. Basises of such discussion would be

   • Edits by project and country of origin, one of latest statistics of Wikipedia editings
   • w:List of languages by number of native speakers, this list mentioned not only the populations of first language (mother tongue) speakers but also the population including second language speakers = potential/maximum number of readers of each language document.
   • Internationality: or in how many countries = how widely are languages used, educated etc. In my personal opinion, for pragmatical reasons, even if two languages have a similar size of speaker population, their importance could be varied geopolitically: bruntly I say, to enforce our global characteristic, we could (but never "should"!) find significance in a language spoken in several continents, regions or countries in some spheres, including communications. Not exactly equivalent though, w:List of official languages may help us to know such geological spreading (there are around 100 languages). --Aphaia 05:53, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Dialects of English

Why in the world does this template bother distinguishing between American English and British English? It's not like the one can't read the other, and vice-versa. Making such useless translations is a criminally negligent waste of time and I haven't yet found an invocation of this template where anyone has even bothered to "convert" between the two dialects of English. Please sort languages by alphabet and change Slovenian to Slovene

• Sl (Slovene) comes after sk (Slovak) alphabetically
• Slovenian should be changed to Slovene, per en:Slovene language (for the reasoning, see the talk page)
