Last-minute comments

I've neglected to say that sometimes, as a PEG reviewer, I've found background poorly expressed—particularly where the project is building on work already done, or where the activities are complex (e.g. the Nepali script grant). This has sometimes required leg-work by reviewers that would be great to minimise.

So, I wonder whether a note about background should be included in the instructions; the danger, of course, is that this might add unnecessary work for applicants of projects where reviewers/staff don't need any background—we certainly don't want that.

I've edited overleaf so that "will" becomes "would"—I think this is proper, given that proposals are conditional on satisfying the strategic priorities and criteria.

Also, I think we could rationalise the instructions for "Activities". Here's the current text, with bits that may be redundent struck through:

Describe the main activities of the project that would be completed if the project is funded. What activities will be undertaken? Who would do what and at what stages? It's often useful to provide a project timeline and/or program schedule. Please provide any relevant links, including to project planning pages, lists of participants, program schedules, etc.

Perhaps, then, this could be inserted (italics):

Please provide any relevant links, including to project planning pages, lists of participants, program schedules. Consider starting with a brief statement of the background, but do this only if the proprosal is complicated or technical or builds on previous work.

I've changed something that might be translated into something a little accusatory: "Grantees Proposals are subject to line-item scrutiny of expenses.

Also, "Please inform the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) of any requirements requests for non-financial assistance now." – let's not imply that all requests will be granted!
