Template talk:Datelink
Add topicAppearance
This template provides a link to the English Wikipedia section about a date. It works for dates from 1 July 2006 (for dates before that the format is different).
Examples:
"{{datelink|2006|7|3}}"
gives "Monday 3 July 2006" [1]"{{datelink|2007|3|9}}"
gives "Friday 9 March 2007" [2]
Due to the "hidden external link" backlinks can be found, e.g.: March 2007
Oddly, on the English Wikipedia itself w:Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Dates_containing_a_month_and_a_day seems to say that for the benefit of autoformatting the link targets have to be the year and the month/day combination, not the year/month or year/month/day combination. This means that it takes at least two steps to arrive at the latter targets.
To go to a year/month/day combination:
- first go to the month/day combination, e.g. w:April 2
- follow the link "2007 (Monday)" in the section "2 April in recent years".
Alternatively:
- follow the link "2007" to w:2007
- follow the link "Apr"
- follow the link "2" in the calender
To go to a year/month combination:
- if no date of the month is given no autoformatting is possible anyway, so a link to the year/month combination can be, and is often, supplied
- if the date of the month is given we need two steps again
