Unexpected behaviour
[edit]With my interface language set to English, Template:Abstract_Wikipedia_navbox/fr gives me the navbox in French (as expected), but following the links takes me to the English pages, which is (or was) unexpected. Presumably this happens because of the Special:MyLanguage in the links. If this is the intent, I would expect the text in the navbox to follow my interface language as well (where the translation exists). I would prefer it not to be the intent, but either way the links should follow the language they appear in.--GrounderUK (talk) 20:59, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
- @GrounderUK: I believe this is the intended behaviour.
Special:MyLanguage
links will always go to the language that is specified in your user-preferences. That way, if a page is not translated into one language, but a minimally-bilingual person is able to struggle through some of it, then any links they click will go to the translation in their preferred language if such is available. E.g. If a native-French speaker is able to understand a bit of English, they will still get links that go to French translations wherever possible. Does that make sense, or am I overlooking a core use-case? Thanks. :) Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 18:59, 16 December 2020 (UTC)- @Quiddity (WMF):Thank you. I understand. For me, it is a minor inconvenience that I can work around. For the type of user you refer to, I would have thought it would be better for them to see the text of the link in their preferred (interface) language, at least where a target page in that language exists. That, I suppose, implies a separately translatable navbox, but perhaps only one that can toggle between interface language and page-content language. Oh, for a Wiki of functions! Thanks again.--GrounderUK (talk) 21:20, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
