Contributors

[edit]
  • Wikimedia Statistics can be difficult to interpret. What is your impression, how many steady contributors do you have?
There are about 4-5 steady contributors. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are approximately 20 to 30 regular contributors in Uzbek, with WikiStipendiya contest having increased them to above than one hundred, as of 2022. I am from Greek Wikipedia, not Uzbek speaker, but watch the activity of the wiki and have got a good understanding of it. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Are your contributors mostly native speakers?
Yes, they are. But there are some users, who are learning Uzbek, and they've made some edits. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mostly Uzbek speakers, periodically a few second language speakers and other users. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Where do your contributors live (regions/country)?
Some in Uzbekistan, some are abroad. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As of 2022, most are from Uzbekistan, however there are also a few contributors in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (where there are strong Uzbek minorities in areas adjacent to Uzbekistan). NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • How common is it that your contributors meet in real life?
Very rare. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In 2022, there was a program named WikiOromgoh, a weeklong camping for WikiStipendiya participants, and other users. WikiStipendiya has mostly contributors which are 15 to 35 years old, mirroring the age group of the most contributors of Uzbek Wikipedia (that already contributed before WikiStipendiya). It aims mostly students. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other Wikipedias

[edit]
  • Do you have special contacts with another Wikipedias (maybe in related languages)?
There are some users from Turkish and Kazakh Wikipedias who make edits. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Do you translate a lot from other Wikipedias? Which ones?
Yes, we do. We usually translate from English and Russian Wikipedias. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As of 2022, the users mostly translate from Russian and English, however there are translations from Kazakh and Turkish as well. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Organization and support

[edit]
  • Is there a Wikimedia chapter in your country? How does your language relate to it?
No, there is no Wikimedia chapter in Uzbekistan. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is Uzbek Wikimedians User Group as of 2022. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. In 2022, as a product of the collaboration of the Uzbek usergroup and the youth affairs committee of Uzbekistani government, a contest named WikiStipendiya in order to increase the reach of Uzbek Wikipedia. Even the Uzbek president Shavkat Mirziyoyev spoke about WikiStipendiya in late June 2022 (see the page Mehrinoz Abbosova in Uzbek for more detail). NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your Wikipedia and the linguistic community

[edit]
  • Is there a language institution for your language, like an Academy, or a club of people interested in your language? Do you have contact with them?
As of 2022 nothing. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Who (else) supports you?
Government showed interest in Uzbek Wikipedia, and they're supporting us. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Inspired from the 2019 decree of Shavkat Mirziyoyev for the development of Uzbek content on the net, the government's youth affairs committee collaborated with the Uzbek usergroup, resulting in the creation of the WikiStipendiya contest. Many users have registered for the contest, as it offers fairly high scholarships for the most prolific users. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • What does the public outreach for your edition look like? Do you have flyers, give lectures, trainings etc.?
There was lecture at Tashkent IT University, and it's been aired on local TV-channel. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
WikiStipendiya had an press conference in 13 May 2022, and 7 days later it began, receiving coverage in national media. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Do you get feedback from readers?
Yes, sometimes they leave messages on talk pages. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • What other encyclopedias exist in your language?
There are National Uzbek Encyclopedia and obsolete Uzbek Soviet Encyclopedia. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Content

[edit]
  • Does your edition concentrates on certain topics, like your region and language, or Latin Wikipedia on Roman history and Christianity?
Most users are interested in rock-music, so we have plenty articles covering rock-bands and heavy metal musicians. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Uzbekistan, settlements and cities around the world (due to robot activity), topics of general interest and Soviet republics, and various sectors have a decent coverage. There is a lot of thematic development with WikiStipendiya, although the machine translating is a problem. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Did your edition enjoy text donations, for example from older encyclopedias?
I heard creators of National Uzbek Encyclopedia are going to donate their articles. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It happened in 2013, with CoderSIBot uploading the contents. After Uzbek was growing slowly until 2022, when WikiStipendiya began. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Language

[edit]
  • Is there a generally accepted norm about your language (spelling, dictionary, pronunciation)?
Both yes and no. We have special organizations responsible for standartization of Uzbek language, but there are different norms on some topics. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • How do you deal with different spellings, dialects etc. (like B.E. lift and A.E. elevator)?
We generally select Uzbek version of the word (if available), and if there are many versions of it, we select most spoken/written one. Abdullais4u 03:41, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As above. There is a consensus. You will see differences mostly in how the apostrophe (e.g. o', g') is written (which means, if there is an okina symbol or an apostrophe). Cyrillic is used from some users, and there is a converter. Cyrillic has very wide use in the country, even as of 2022. NikosLikomitros (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
