Enhancing PAWS

[edit]

From my point of view instead of setting up a new Wikimedia project it is better to further work on PAWS. The idea of the Wikimedia projects is the free availability of the content and if this criteria is matched people can use PAWS to calculate things as long as they are within the limitations of PAWS regarding available resources. From my point of view collaborative calculation using Notebooks for academic research for example should be hosted at infrastructure operated by research institutions and not at infrastructure operated with resources of the Wikimedia Foundation. What if users could configure their PAWS or Wikinotebooks account settings to bring and to utilize their own computing resources, e.g., from their research institutions, employers, or other cloud service providers, for processing some notebooks? That is, some notebooks would be intended to be run on Wikimedia Foundation resources, e.g., those which generate multimedia content for Commons and Wikipedia, and others would require users to have brought, configured, and connected their own computing resources. With a system like this, an integrated means of categorizing notebooks, and a clear means of communicating to users which varieties of notebooks that they were interacting with, benefits for users would include capabilities to readily publish, share, search for, retrieve, reuse, fork, discuss, and collaborate on computational notebooks on the Web. Also, on the topic of categorizing computational notebooks, considering the Jupyter Lite project, some notebooks could be run in end-users' Web browsers. AdamSobieski (talk) 07:34, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
