Wikimedia Nederland launches the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform. The platform aims to stimulate global re-use of Dutch collections on non-European cultural heritage. In particular, it aims to stimulate collections on countries with which the Netherlands have had historical ties. These countries include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Ghana, Suriname, South Africa, and others.

The platform also aims to foster contacts between Dutch cultural heritage institutions and Wikimedia contributors across the globe. However, participation is not limited to Wikimedia contributors. Anyone can participate, making it relevant for education and research as well.

Re: Does your country have historic ties with the Netherlands?

[edit]

To answer the question, the main recent tie is the mass emigration from Italy to the Benelux. Other than that, all the thinkers who had to flee to Antwerp and so on due to Roman church persecution. :) Nemo (overleg) 14 jun 2016 14:09 (CEST)

Hi Nemo bis sorry to answer you so late, but thank you for your reaction. We will put it in our list of possibilities and investigate this more thoroughly and get back to you later Elisabethwiessner (overleg) 15 jul 2016 16:43 (CEST)

Re: Does your country have historic ties with the Netherlands?

[edit]

The Wellcome Library uploaded a large number of its images last year, and there are some which might be relevant to this project here. Hope they are useful! Zeromonk (overleg) 18 jun 2016 10:19 (CEST)

Hi Zeromonk Thank you for your reaction, that is interesting. We will communicate it to the Dutch Wikipedians! Elisabethwiessner (overleg) 15 jul 2016 16:43 (CEST)

Brazil

[edit]

Hey guys, what's the idea surrounding Brazil? Do you have any plan already, need some help,... ? Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 18:55, 1 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rodrigo, thanks! No plans yet; if we notice there is interest in Brazil, we can approach our GLAM contacts with requests. For instance, our long-term partner, the National Museum of World Cultures, has quite a bit of Brazilian heritage in its collection and we can approach them with the question to donate some of this material if it might be useful. There are probably other GLAMs in the Netherlands as well with collections related to Brazil, we still need to investigate this. Likewise, Brazil may have interesting GLAM collections related to the Netherlands, but we don't have any contacts there yet. Are you interested in some specific topics? And yes, help is welcome in any form :-) Spinster (talk) 12:02, 3 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
This donation would be interesting.
Some group here in Brazil are planning GLAM's projects, maybe I could talk to them to include GLAMs related to Dutch cultural heritage.
However, we need to check which museums are guarding such material.
Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 14:28, 5 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'd love to be in touch with the Brazilian GLAM group. Are you involved in this as well? Or is there anyone else that I/we can contact? In the meanwhile, I will put the Brazilian heritage from the National Museum of World Cultures on the wishlist of materials to be uploaded to Commons. Spinster (talk) 07:56, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi Rodrigo, The National Museum of World Cultures has made a selection of the Brazilian heritage in their collection. It will be available later in November and I will do my best to find someone to upload it before the end of the year. I will let you know as soon as it is available and will invite the Brazilian community to use these objects as they wish. Furthermore the archive of the Dutch province Noord-Holland, the Noord-Hollands Archief, have discovered 34 beautiful drawings by Frans Post made in the time that the Dutch ruled in Brazil. The drawings are currently on display in the Rijksmuseum. We can upload these images and will do this soon. Elisabethwiessner (talk) 13:23, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dutch Bengal

[edit]

Hi @Spinster:, I am interested in Dutch Bengal, specially Hugli-Chinsura, which is just 4-hours ride from my home. I can organize a photo-walk to capture the Dutch heritage there (though not much left), and increase the photo and article content of the area, if you want. If you also have any other plan, I will try my best to help. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 11:16, 22 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Bodhisattwa:, thanks for your interest in the project and for this very nice proposal. Yes, this sounds like a good plan! Do you know other Wikimedians in your region who would be interested in such a photo walk? Is there any way in which we can help you prepare for it? Furthermore, I will take a look in the collections of the GLAM institutions that we frequently work with, to see if they have any images or other media related to the region that might be of interest. Spinster (talk) 09:08, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Spinster:, I have already talked with few Wikimedians who are interested with the project. We are going to take photographs and create articles in at least 2 languages about Dutch Cemetery in Chinsurah very soon. If you find any Bengali books published from Dutch Bengal or books related to that area, we can work on that in Bengali Wikisource also. Thanks, -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 09:56, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Bodhisattwa: Wonderful! I will look/ask around. In the meanwhile, I found this small selection of old maps and drawings related to Hougly/Chinsura, which I believe are all public domain: http://www.atlasofmutualheritage.nl/en/Hougly.492p - they are part of the Atlas of Mutual Heritage project, where Dutch GLAMs make media available about 'shared heritage' regions. Spinster (talk) 10:53, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Spinster:, Wow!! great, please feel free to upload the maps. Maybe we can then work with the maps using Wikimaps warper. Also we need to create a project subpage for all works related to Chinsurah. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 13:39, 13 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Spinster:, Hope you are fine. Sorry that I didn't check earlier that the maps of Atlas of Mutual Heritage were already uploaded in Commons. Thanks @Susannaanas: for providing the information. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 12:33, 5 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Spinster and AWossink:, we are planning for a photo-walk in the Dutch Cemetery, Chinsurah very soon, may be next weekend. We will photograph all the tombs, geo-locate them, and will create Wikidata items of the persons buried there. West Bengal Wikimedians User Group will be supporting this photo-walk. This is the project subpage. Regards, -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 15:41, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Spinster and AWossink:, 2nd day of Chinsurah photo-walk was carried out on May 14, 2017 under scorching heat. We will complete all the uploads and wikidata entries before the 3rd day of the walk in the month of September or October this year. Thanks a lot for mentioning in the April GLAM newsletter. Regrards, Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:59, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Spinster and AWossink:, we have finished the on-field photo-documentation of Dutch heritage in Chinsurah few days back. We will finish uploading soon. It would be great for the volunteer participants, if a combined blog can be posted from both the affiliates. Please let me know if it is possible. Best wishes, -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:51, 3 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Bodhisattwa: We should be able to write something. Did you already have an idea about what kind of blog that should be, and where it should be published? Best, --AWossink (talk) 08:49, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@AWossink:, it would be great if you please share WMNL's viewpoint about the Chinsurah project and its output, which can be published in WMF blog site. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 15:01, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Portugal

[edit]

Hello,

I would highly recommend including Portugal as a priority, mainly due to two factors:

  • In the 15th/16th century we were one of the poles of execution and acquisition of Early Netherlandish works of art. There is the particular case of madeira Island which has many works of art of that style, including the reredos of Sé do Funchal (c. 1510), an E.N work of art executed in Lisbon by a Flemish master, and many others in churches and museums in the island, some of them are considered by experts to be even of higher quality than those which are nowadays in Flanders by the same painters (I recall teh case of a Van Cleves). There are many of those works of art in Portugal mainland as well, both in place and in museums. Many of those works of art were acquired directly in the Flemish ports where Madeira Island was engaged in the commerce of sugar, it was usual to send the sugar there and bring back those commissioned works of arts to our churches and private chapels.
  • The "Portuguese" azulejo, which has been nowadays elevated to the state of a symbol of the country, is actually a derivative of Delft blue tiles from the Netherlands. Initially the panels and individual themed tiles were all imported from the Netherlands, and we have a large heritage of them around.

Please consider including Portugal in the project. I can help personally with the Madeira Island Dutch heritage, as I live here.

Thanks,

Mauritius

[edit]

Interesting island and country called after Maurice, prince of Orange in 17th century and owned by the Dutch several years.

Swedish Nationalmuseum in Stockholm

[edit]

This set of metadata has been released on Wikidata and Commons, complete with hi-res images. Because everything is so well documented and looks so wonderful, this would be a great way to get started writing relevant articles or just adding these images to existing articles. There is a huge amount of high-quality Dutch art in there - love the Van Goghs! See en:User:Jane023/Paintings in the Nationalmuseum Stockholm for inspiration. Emigration/immigration as well?

[edit]

@Spinster, @Elisabethwiessner: The introduction states "Over the centuries, the Netherlands have developed close ties with many countries through trade and colonialism. Shared cultural heritage has evolved in the Netherlands and in these countries." So trade and colonialism: are cultural heritage ties by emigration and immigration included?

Millions of descendants of Dutch immigrants live in Canada (Vancouver, British Columbia), the US, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, etc. On the other hand, in NL there are many German, Indonesian and Caribbean, Jewish, Hungarian, South African, Eritrean, Ghanese etc. (descendants of) immigrants and of course Moroccans, Kurds and Turcs. Their shared heritage might be included in the project, or at least mentioned. Of course there is in many cases (list of countries in project) overlap with ties "through trade and colonialism".

Or these ties could be excluded explicitly for clarity, as being beyond the scope of this project. Thanks for considering, Hansmuller (talk) 19:44, 23 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Photographs of/by Siebold Ulfers

[edit]

Wikimedia Nederland received a request from North Sulawesi, Indonesia, asking for photographs of/by Siebold Ulfers. "He was the first evangelist to come to Minahasa Selatan, and taught the Bible and educated the people about farming and working." Email address of the requester is known at Wikimedia Nederland. I would gladly write about the Dutch/Afrikaner history of South Africa. Any source could be of use. Oranjesam (talk) 15:24, 1 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tirtanadi Water Tower

[edit]

Would like to check if the Netherlands have any historical records of en:Tirtanadi Water Tower in Medan, Indonesia. It is known that this water tower is built during Dutch colonial era (assumed to be 1908, as written on the tower base), but the article is still very short and has no reference yet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kenrick95 (talk) 13:52, 5 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Old Audio Recording from 1920-1950 (Music or Historical Speech)

[edit]

I saw a collection of Indonesian old Kerontjong Music in this KITLV audio archives page from 1900-1960, and also a project run by WFMU through Free Music Archive website called Antique Phonograph Music Program. Inspired by these movements, I am curious if you could gain access for collection of Indonesian old audio recordings, and make it available online on Wikimedia Commons project. Because, by seeing the date of publication of that recordings (mostly the 1900-1940 recordings), I assume that, potentialy, a lot of that recordings are already in Public Domain, and ready to be shared in a more 'open' way, in Wikimedia Commons, for example. Thank you. Hilmanasdf (talk) 12:09, 14 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Frans Post at Itaú Cultural in São Paulo, Brazil

[edit]

Hello! Today I went to a tour at Itaú Cultural, in São Paulo, Brazil, and I remembered this project of yours, so I took pictures of their collection of Frans Post's maps and images of Brazil. Are they already uploaded? --Joalpe (talk) 21:18, 21 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Joalpe:! Thanks for the shout-out! I don't think that the images that you uploaded are already on Commons, so thank you for taking them and making them available! So are these drawings that are in the collection of Itaú Cultural? Best, --AWossink (talk) 12:30, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@AWossink: Yup. Itaú Cultural has a large collection, most of which is not publicly displayed. Their total collection has 15,000 pieces, including art works by Post that were not on display this weekend. They have a full section on Dutch art in the period of colonial Brazil, one of the largest in the world according to them. A while ago we reached out to them for a GLAM prospect; they were interested, but have not replied since then. Another GLAM initiative we are starting is with the Museu Paulista in São Paulo, a museum that is currently closed but will definitely have Dutch colonial work that will be of interest to the project "The Netherlands and the world". I know the pictures I took are not of high quality --I just used my phone--, but since you have the impression that they contribute I am happy to have done the upload. Is there an appropriate way I should report this contribution? I am not sure if this s relevant, but I am a member of the Wikimedia Community User Group Brasil. --Joalpe (talk) 12:54, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Joalpe: I'll see if we can report on it through our social media channels, and ping in you user group! So you mentioned that these two museums have large Dutch collections on colonial Brazil. You also mentioned that you reached out to Itaú Cultural, but that they did not respond. If you think it can help, I am happy to also try to reach out to them and see what we can achieve. It would certainly be an interesting opportunity to build a small project on, if anything comes from it. Feel free to PM me on this issue, if you want to discuss specific details. Best, --AWossink (talk) 13:19, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Feedback Netherlands the World Exchange Platform requested

[edit]

Dear all,

The Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform aims to be a place where (Dutch) GLAMs and Wikimedia volunteers can interact to help bring digitised collections to Wikimedia Commons. The platform went online in April 2017. A few months later, we would now like to collect some feedback on the platform:

  • If you’ve signed up on the platform but never got around to using it, or if you looked at the platform but didn’t sign up, we would like to hear about that.
  • If you’ve never heard of the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform before, we would like to hear about that too.
  • In general, we are also interested to get feedback about the platform itself. So, whether you’ve already had a look at it, or just learned about it from this email, we would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to browse the website and share with us your thoughts on its purpose, the available functionality, the layout, things that you’re missing that should be there, suggestions, etc.

Feel free to share your thoughts on my talk page, this talk page or email me directly if you don’t want to share your thoughts in public. Your feedback will be invaluable to help us decide how to move forward with the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform.

Thank you!

Regards, --AWossink (talk) 09:04, 3 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
