Talk:Wikimedia Foundation Medium-term plan 2019/Process
Add topicProduct modernization
[edit]I would like more information about the second goal, "Move from viewing Wikipedia as solely a website, to viewing the Wikimedia ecosystem as a collection of knowledge, information, and insights with infinite possible product experiences and applications." What does that mean in concrete terms? Does it involve respecting and protecting reader and editor privacy? Does it involve supporting readers and editors? Developing their communities and participation? Is there any room for helping people in changing views about products? 73.222.1.26 05:06, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, we will have more information on each of the two goals in the coming plan document which will be posted on Meta on April 6th. In it we will describe what the priority areas and key outcomes will be to support this goal, which will help answer your questions. JBaldwin (WMF) (talk) 15:42, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
Global participation
[edit]I'm somewhat worried about the first goal being "Grow participation globally, focusing on emerging markets". This is something that the WMF does not do well directly, but does do well through its support of affiliates. I hope that this won't be focused on direct intervention (new readers style), but will be much more grants/support-focused? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 01:35, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Mike, to achieve this goal we expect to have to test and employ a variety of strategies. We will have more information about what we will prioritize and what we plan to accomplish related to this goal in the upcoming plan that we will publish on April 6th. However, we are still defining how we will accomplish those things because we recognize that we will need to build in flexibility to adapt to recommendations from the Movement Strategy process, respond to emergent opportunities, and build on our knowledge about what works and what doesn’t. "Grow the use…"
[edit]Thanks for sharing this information. I'm interested in learning more about the Wikimedia Foundation's first goal "Grow the use of Wikipedia and Wikimedia across the globe". Does this refer to readers or to contributors, or to both? (the English word "user" is a somewhat difficult-to-translate word that can both refer to the people who read a Wikipedia article and also to those that write Wikipedia articles) Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:35, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Frank, Thanks for the question. The plan that we will publish on Meta contains more information about how we intend to grow the use of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects. We are considering both readers and contributors. Please come back after April 6th to read the plan and learn more about how we define growth. JBaldwin (WMF) (talk) 00:55, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
