Involvement of Wiki Loves Sport 2020

Wiki Loves Sport had been mentioned as a project that's related to Wikisoccerthons, however, a recent brief discussion with the Usergroup revealed that the current Wiki Loves Sport Edition is limited to articles about women. Project debrief in Mbale

Meeting(s) summary

• The first meeting was with two people at the institutional stakeholders (The innovation hub at the Uganda Christian University in Mbale) to determine workflow and collaboration requirements in terms of.

1. Pilot project duration.
2. Formal procedural requirements.
3. Workflow with the Usergroup, innovation hub and project participants.

• The second meeting was held with three participants' stakeholders (A member from the Mbale District Football Association, and two 4th division league club representatives from Livingstone International University, and the Islamic University in Uganda) to understand project activities in regards to;

1. Objectives, schedules and timeline, training requirements.
2. Benefits, content generation, guides on editing and adding content.
3. Next meeting, scheduled for Thursday 1 October 2020.

Project debrief in Jinja

Date: Thursday 24 - 25 September 2020

Time: 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm and 11:30 am - 12:00 PM

Venue: Jinja town

Participants: 4 participants in total

Meeting(s) summary

The first meeting was with the Jinja District Football Association (DFA) Chairman to follow up on previous e-mail communication and participant involvement in project activities. The second meeting was a debrief with two members from one of the clubs in the Jinja DFA league, these are key points from both the discussions;

• Most of the clubs were affected by the COVID-19 situation in regards to the lockdown on sports activities.
• There are 12 teams in the 4^th Division, 8 teams in the 5^th division, 6 teams in the regional league, and 5 ladies' teams
• The DFA is soon having an executive meeting with all the Clubs (Usergroup is invited)
• The FUFA technical center in Njeru can not be used for online training sessions at the moment as it's a quarantine center for COVID-19 patients/suspects.
• Content produced from activities will be freely accessed on respective Wikimedia Projects.

Project de-brief in Jinja and Iganga

Date: Monday 28 September 2020

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Venue: Kakindu Stadium, and Eastern Regional Football Association offices in Iganga

Participants: 6 participants in total

Meeting(s) summary This was a follow up discussion organised to have a de-brief with the Jinja DFA executive, a meeting with the Eastern Region District Football Associations was also held. An outline from the discussions is below;

• Wikimedia provides a platform, and an infrastructure for all the content that will be produced from the project
  • Participants might need transferable skills from this training.
• Participation in the project is free of charge (no cost), and is by volunteering (a time commitment is required)
• Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia or Wikicommons can not be used as marketing, or sponsorship tools.
• The DFA is willing to collaborate with the Usergroup on this project, irregularities on participation due to the COVID-19 pandemic can be solved together.
• The Eastern Region District Football Associations is one of the largest FUFA Regions
  • It has 22 DFA including Jinja, Mbale, Iganga, Tororo, Sironko, Kamuli, Buyende, e.t.c
  • There are 22 clubs in the 3rd division league
  • There are 8 Women clubs
  • Most of the DFA's in the region can be able to participate in the project.

Project debrief Focused group

Date: Sunday 27 September 2020

Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Venue: Online (Zoom platform)

Meeting summary

This was a focused event with participants from female football clubs. Participant mobilisation was done by a contact person form the Creative Commons Chapter in Uganda. A whatsapp group was created for coordination. These are the highlights from the online meeting;

• Participants were from female teams in Fortportal, Bugiri, Kampala, and Entebbe
• The online call was attended by 8 participants in total
• There are some football activities not part of the FUFA leagues that might need to be documented.
• Next steps included, Sharing the presentation used, getting participants’ contact details, sharing a dashboard to track contributions, a survey to get participants' expectations, facilitation, and refund procedures.

Project debrief in Mbarara

Date: Wednesday 30 September 2020

Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Venue: Hive Colab (Mbarara)

Participants: 6 people

Meeting summary

The meeting was arranged by one of the volunteer field mobilisers in Mbarara. Separate discussions were held with one of the FUFA delegates in the Western Region. A member from the coaching staff of one of the academies in Mbarara, a player from the Mbarara Junior Team, and another volunteer with an interest in Soccer. These are the highlights from the discussions;

• It's a good idea to engage regional associations during general assemblies or meetings for a larger outreach to potential project stakeholders.
• Vandalism needs to be watched out for during project activities.
• Participants need to be briefed on project requirements both in terms of resources, tools, and other technical aspects in the new on-line training approach.
• A date and time was selected for the next on-line discussion.

October 2020

Volunteer Outreach in Mbale

1 October

• One hour online meeting with 4 participants in total.
• A recap from the previous meeting, and the project meta page was reviewed.
• Project objectives, logistics, schedules and documentation were also talked about.
• The next meeting was scheduled in a week's time to introduce other Wikimedia Projects.

8 October

• A 90 minutes' online call with 7 participants in total.
• The timing of the calls, and volunteer facilitation were reviewed.
• A project dashboard was shared, documentation, and first steps of Wikimedia Commons.
• An offline meeting was proposed to support volunteers who faced challenges in attending online.

24 October

Volunteer roles, and outreach in Kampala

10 October

• A one hour online meeting with 9 people in total to review roles for Usergroup volunteers in Kampala to help out on this project.
• A project de-brief and upcoming activities were discussed.
• Participants asked about project start dates, inclusion of other sports like Basketball, the need for Offline meetings, and if there existed established Wikimedians in the project areas.
• A possible challenge of having most of the local soccer players not being notable, and without existing articles, and citations/references.
• Volunteer roles and tasks reviewed included project lead, community coordinator, and community mobiliser, which could be performed by two people, if there's need

Project Lead

• • Plan project sustainability.
  • Communicate activities, and ensure participation of the relevant team members.
  • Prepare relevant project documents like letters, agreements, project de-briefs, e.t.c.
  • Prepare monthly updates, and financial records.
  • Update the contacts and partners database.
  • Monitor, and evaluate project activities.
  • Spare at least 20 hours a week to perform the above activities.

Community Coordinator

• • Organise weekly themed events with the relevant DFA
  • Carry out (on-line) training for atleast 15 volunteers.
    • Provide support, and mentorship to the community mobiliser in one of the target areas.
  • Build a list of articles to create or improve.
  • Encourage the contribution of new subject articles
  • Collection and integration of donated content.
  • Update event activity on meta, then share outcomes to the team
  • Spare at least 8 hours a week to perform the above activities

Community Mobiliser

• • Find out the availability of participants for the weekly events.
  • Attend (on-line) training with the community coordinator.
  • Send reminders to potential event participants.
  • Follow up with participants on further training needs.
    • Keep the community coordinator updated about these needs.
  • Spare at least 4 hours a week to perform the above activities

Meeting with OpenStreetMap Uganda

10 October

• This was a 90 minute online meeting with one of the potential project or Usergroup partners.
• The discussion focused on previous collaboration efforts, follow up discussions, and recent efforts.
• Current organisational projects, and programs were explored to determine linkages and possible collaboration through the Wikisocerthon project or other Usergroup activities.
• Next steps will be determined by the end of October

Meeting With Kawempe DFA

29th October

• The Kawempe DFA has 9 committee members and composed of 2 soccer Divisions(5th and 4th Divisions). The current secretary is Mr. Saddam Kamulegeya who we managed to interact with and below is our discussion.
  • The 5th Division is currently composed of 12 (twelve) clubs and runs for a period of 5 months usually from Early December to Early April when it is ended seeing the top 3 clubs qualifying for 4th Division while the 4th Division comprises of 13(thirteen) clubs and sees the last 3 performers being demoted to 5th Division.

Meeting With Nakawa DFA

13th November

• The Nakawa DFA has a committe of 10 Executive members and a sub-committee of 16 members working on behalf FUFA. The current secretary is Mr. Muhammad Ssensalire who we managed to meet with and discuss a detailed conversation on the Nakawa DFA.
  • This DFA has two divisions the 5th Division which comprises of 10 clubs but the total is unstable as clubs are not limited and the 4th Division which has 17 clubs but due to the COVID19 pandemic, it's currently composed of 16 clubs.
  • The Nakawa Division also has other football tournaments like Uganda Cup (under FUFA), Nakawa Cup (governed locally), and also the Nakawa Super Cup. there's also Youth Tournaments like the Odilo FUFA Youth Tournament (For Primary Schools), Airtel Raising Stars (Under16, boys & girls) and the Nakawa Youth League.

Regional

• Who Qualifies For Regional?,
  • The Top 2 clubs in the 4th division do qualify for Regional however, the Executive Assembly does seat and decide or execute on what takes the Nakawa DFA football forward and records are kept in the Assembly Book.

• Demotion
  • Demotion happens during the Assembly and randomly to either 3, 4 or 5 clubs. This is because the Nakawa DFA in 2017 had 7 clubs that had represented it and 4 of them were demoted meaning they had to demote more than 3 clubs at 4th Division Level.

• Challenges Facing Nakawa DFA
  • Stadiums. According to the Nakawa DFA they lack enough stadiums and only have 9 stadiums which are shared by the football clubs and eventually affects their fixture schedule and leading to Congestion of football matches which at the end affects their finance since each club could spend lowest of UGX 120,000 per game.
  • Referee Training. This training is facilitated by the Nakawa DFA and a total of 26 Referees which while they become professionals they are taken away from them by Regional and FUFA hence causing an effect on a day when they have 7 Matches and each game requires at least 5 Referees.

Volunteer Outreach in Mbarara

10 October

• This was a 30 minutes' online meeting with 2 volunteers in Mbarara.
• Reaching out to the Mbarara DFA or any other DFA in the region was proposed.
• An offline meeting will be needed to carry out training, and other technical support for some of the members.

Volunteer Outreach Focused group

08 October

• This was a one hour offline meeting with the Community coordinator for the Focused group.
• The discussion aimed at getting a deeper understanding about the long term objectives, and project stakeholders.
• Project logistical needs, challenges, sample solutions, and a preparation of the upcoming online meeting was also done.

11 October

• This was a one hour online meeting with 6 people in total
• An offline training was proposed by the participants which can be jointly organised with the Jinja contacts.
• A user survey to determine will be shared with all the potential participants.
• First steps documentation for Wikimedia Commons were shared, and the need to get images from national leagues was suggested.
  • The Uganda Premier league is starting in November 2020.
  • A Suggestion was made to talk with club photographers for images, and also from upcoming play-offs at the FUFA Technical center in Njeru.

Volunteer Outreach in Jinja

Meeting With Jinja DFA

• This was a four hour meeting with the community coordinator with a number of 7 people in total.
• Background of Wikimedia Community Usergroup in Uganda and other upcoming events were discussed.
• Training on updating meta page, uploading images to Wikimedia commons, subscribing to the Wikisoccerthons dashboard, editing soccer related articles and looking through the manual templates for club, player, season and stadium articles were all carried out.

November 2020

Training, and editathons in Jinja

12th November

• Training consisted of 5 people, 2 from Jinja and 3 from Bujiri. The training lasted for four hours at Jinja City Hotel.
• Accounts created on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
• Updating meta pages, communication on discussion pages, updating wikipedia articles, uploading images to Wikimedia Commons and subscribing to the dashboard.
• Editing already existing soccer articles and manual templates for Club, Player, Season, Stadium were all looked through.

Training, and editathons in Mbale

14 November

• Media Officers and Club CEOs can be a good fit for the training.
• Interact with Journalists for profiling lower division clubs.
• There was a segment for football development which can be resumed with Wikimedia Content development.
• There are football legends that still live and have stories to tell.
• Some lower division clubs face challenges that are common across other areas.
• Detailed documentation helps make a good story.
• Profiling players can make them proud.
