CEE @ Human Rights Policy Conversations?

[edit]

Dear CEE community, I'm copying a post from the FB group to ensure we can reach more of you. The Global Advocacy team is inviting members of this group to a CEE-focused regional conversation about the Human Rights Policy on May 9.

We want to know how community members' human rights have been negatively impacted and how the Foundation can better support individuals and prevent such situations.

You can join any of four regionally-focused conversations. Each call will be 60 minutes, on Zoom, with translation support. More information about how to join these calls, what we will do with the information collected, and the history of the human rights policy can be found here.

Danke! --FPutz (WMF) (talk) 21:12, 21 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Smaller languages

[edit]

The smaller Wikimedia languages which are part of the CEE region do not currently have a large enough community to support this project.

I am not entirely sure, why this should be the case. How is a certain community size a prerequisite for being part of this network? I am asking with the Sorbian Wikipedias in mind. --Johannes Rohr (WMDE) 14:29, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Uzbek Wikipedia

[edit]

I recently met User:Casual, a sysop on Uzbek Wikipedia, at the WMF office in San Francisco. I told her about CEE and wondered if maybe a member of the Uzbek community might wish to join as an observer, similar to Kazakhstan. Noting that here. CEE @ Euro 2016

[edit]

I'm not really a great fan of football, but I'm thinking of any opportunity to have our CEE region united around a common cause. An idea that occurred to me this evening while listening to the sports channel, was writing on CEE football-related topics during the championship. It starts on 10 June, i.e. the CEE Spring will have finished by then. Judging from the Group Stage program, CEE has quite solid presence in the championship, and every day in the group stage there are matches of one or more CEE teams. What I mean in practice is something like this:

Day CEE Country on focus Group
10 June Romania A
11 June Albania A
11 June Russia B
11 June Slovakia B
12 June Croatia D
12 June Poland C
12 June Turkey D
12 June Ukraine C
13 June Czech Rep. D
14 June Austria F
14 June Hungary F
15 June Albania A
15 June Romania A
15 June Russia B
15 June Slovakia B
16 June Poland C
16 June Ukraine C
17 June Croatia D
17 June Czech Rep. D
18 June Austria F
18 June Hungary F
19 June Romania A
19 June Albania A
20 June Russia B
20 June Slovakia B
21 June Croatia D
21 June Czech Rep. D
21 June Poland C
21 June Turkey D
21 June Ukraine C
22 June Austria F
22 June Hungary F

I guess, we can build upon the experience with the CEE Spring cute modular tables, and for each country we have lists of the players in the national teams, coaches, notable players from the recent past, etc. The idea can be extended further on to the Knock-out phase, too, by the end of the championship or as long as there are CEE teams in it. Hope this idea will be taken into consideration. Spiritia 18:58, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. Shall we create lists of articles? --Artificial123 (talk) 17:52, 5 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Artificial123: Maybe it is a good idea, unless it is too time-consuming. National players, coaches, articles about the adult and the youth national teams, national football stadiums, something like this (not much more I guess). Spiritia 18:18, 5 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
We need guys with bots, which can take information and put it into tables like CEE Spring. --Artificial123 (talk) 18:20, 5 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

The next big CEE project

[edit]

Here is a place to discuss ideas about what next cool project(s) our community can work on. The issue was raised at CEE Meetup during Wikimania 2016, but we didn't have time to talk properly about it. Your ideas are welcome here! --アンタナナ 20:15, 24 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Just in case an etherpad from the meetup: wikimania2016-ceemeetup --アンタナナ 20:15, 24 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Map

[edit]

Hello, Map in main page is outdated and Kosovo appear to be part of Serbia, which is not OK. Please remove it or update it.--Liridon (talk) 12:26, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think we should have at first discussion for this matter, although it is fact that Kosovo almost eight years existed as a separate country, but for every change I would propose discussion from every community, especially colleagues from Serbia. --Ehrlich91 (talk) 20:55, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
So you say that it is up to the member states of CEE region to decide what map they will use ?? According to the wishes of each country?? I do not want that discussion to take political direction, and we want there to be a map of how world see Kosovo and no how Serbia sees it. BTW this project is founded by Wikimedia Foundation, and should reflect its NPOV position, and is not up to members to decide/vote or wish which map to use. The same issue is in map of WLE, another project managed mainly by countries of CEE region.--Liridon (talk) 21:17, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
I as a German would support the inclusion of Kosovo in the map. The question is, which colour. --Gereon K. (talk) 08:08, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Gereon K., right color would be green, since Kosovo recently have joined this project.--Liridon (talk) 08:50, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Liridon: I did not call of any voting, but my opinion is that we need discussion for this question. I know it is sensitive issue, but Kosovo is "hot" topic not just for us, but for the whole world, especially not officially recognized from all countries, and not being member state of United Nations. It will be nice, when we had several opinions as Gereon already wrote his opinion for this. --Ehrlich91 (talk) 19:19, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Kosovo should be indicated in map, the problem is that official recognition status by CEE countries is close to 50:50% (last time I checked during CEE Spring). Liridon: will dashed border with footnote about the recognition problem be acceptable to your community (enwiki article has image with dashed border although it is visible only in full resolution)? The footnote should also include language based user groups. --Papuass (talk) 20:33, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
I find this actually funny how Wikipedians are willing to negotiate reality away. Kosovo is a reality, irrespective of opinions. Of course I would refuse to participate in a community that denies my political existence. --Arianit (talk) 21:53, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Arianit: Wikipedia is about explaining reality. My country recognizes Kosovo as a sovereign state, but there are countries which do not and it is not a small number as in some other cases. This part of story needs to be represented, too (my proposal about dashed line, Serbia should stay blue, Kosovo should be green). I have commented out the current map as it does not show Kosovo. --Papuass (talk) 15:37, 28 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

This is a first draft of a new map. I am happy to make any changes that are suggested. --Tobias1984 (talk) 15:49, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

WM CEE Newsletter - ideas collected

[edit]
tl;dr We have a new baby born in the CEE wikiverse. Help it makes its first steps. :)

One of the outcomes of the last day's pre-lunch spontaneous session during the CEE Meeting in Warsaw was the idea of establishment of a CEE Newsletter. Partners in this crime are Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska, Nat Tymkiv, Tomasz Ganicz, Kaarel Vaidla and Yours Trolly :) , with the moral support of the attending La Kritzolina, Kalliope Tsouroupidou and Vahid Masrour, and of course, Wozzy and Cancunchyk.

This endeavour stems from the observation that in the last years more CEE countries and more often are featured in the Wiki Education and GLAM newsletters, and this probably is an indicator that we have even more stories to share - between us and with the world - in other areas of our Wikimedian work. (See the stat in Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2017/Programme/Submission/Do we want (need) a CEE newsletter?).

The CEE Newsletter can help us collect in a more consistent, reachable, reusable way stories and good practices developed in the region. It can keep us informed of our ongoing initiatives and be a valuable venue for publicity and reporting purposes, not only in the areas of GLAM and education, but also other institutional collaborations, contests and challenges, wiki expeditions, editathons and other live events, important milestones and anniversaries, notable media appearances, gender gap activities, trainings, software tools developed in the CEE region, tips for useful and reusable Wikidata queries, and many more.

To make the maintenance a bit easier, the CEE Newsletter can feature all the materials submitted to both the GLAM and Educational newsletter, thus serving yet another target group on a minimal additional cost of effort and time.

It also aims to contain the stories that the local CEE volunteers and media relations staffers can provided as materials for publication by the 20th of the month. This makes the newsletter a place for practicing storytelling and reporting skills, i.e. a tool valuable in its own way.

The editorial team (currently of 5 and welcoming new members) will be responsible for maintaining the overall consistent look and feel of the newsletter and reaching out to potential authors from the region. There is also an idea for a "Featured country / language" every month, as well as an idea for recruiting volunteers to translate the newsletter articles to Russian and optionally other languages.

Share what you think about all this? Spiritia 17:25, 28 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Spiritia: the CEE/Newsletter page is all busted up. Is this newsletter dead, or still active? Headbomb (talk) 20:28, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Regional Office hours for funding

[edit]

Hello CEE Wikimedians. If you are an individual, group, or organization interested in seeking resources or funding to support Wikimedia movement activities, the Community Resources team is holding office hours each month (and sometimes, more often) to provide support and guidance on the Wikimedia Foundation's funding programs. Please review our schedule for office/conversation hours for more information. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 14:17, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pilot & Consultation: Geo-based Wikimedia movement metrics

[edit]

Hello, Because the nature of your group is international and regionally focused I wanted to reach out to be sure you are aware of an open pilot and consultation period the Global Data & Insights team is hosting this month and next about the development of new geo-based engagement metrics.

The Wikimedia Movement Data Equity Landscape project is an effort to bring together available signal metrics to provide useful data for answering questions about who is in the Wikimedia movement, what voices may be missing across known pathways for engaging with Wikimedia, and where.

The purpose of this pilot and consultation period is to gather feedback and suggestions from movement organizers about the project, the underlying input data, and the output metrics utility for identifying gaps and opportunities for inclusion and equity across Wikimedia engagement spaces.

The consultation period for these metrics inputs and other design considerations has begun. We seek movement organizers like you to partner either by enrolling in the small pilot group (~5 hours commitment), or more lightly, by inputting to any of the ten consultation prompts on meta which you find personally relevant.

You can review the details of the project and input to discussion prompts for directed questions and design considerations in our meta portal. If you are interested in the pilot and gaining early data access under NDA, or know other movement organizers who would be, there is still room, just let me know and I can send you information on next steps.

Thanks for any time and consideration you can give. JAnstee (WMF) (talk) 19:23, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
